I actually think the whole minion thing could’ve worked.
Like if Minion didn’t like being called Minion just because it makes the embodiment of him a sidekick with his name being a literal MINION, that could’ve been a somewhat logical understanding as for the name change. (Old Chum is even worse though so yeah..)

Not every story needs a followup. Megamind ended perfectly. While some part of me would love to see more of the characters and the world around them, there just really was zero need for a sequel.
Yea tbh i wanted one but not like this i wouldnt have minded to much that the animation and voices look and sound like they came from a video game tie in if the story was good but with this one it just sucks
@@MR-SINISTER76 The thing is, there is no justification for a Megamind sequel to ever exist-besides money, I guess-: Megamind's character arc is introduced and wrapped up neatly within the movie; if a sequel is to be made, there must be new conflict, and there is simply no conflict that is relevant to the established characters therein, and engaging without retracing old plot points and/or undoing parts of the original movie. A Megamind sequel wouldn't inherently be atrocious as is the case now, but it would certainly struggle to justify its existence and build on top of its predecessor without retroactively tampering with it (which is a horrible idea).

@@chaoticstarfish3401 The only movie plot I could think of is if there was a sort of "Justice League" type group that came in after Metroman supposedly died to stop Megamind, thinking the whole good guy act was just a sham- and the movie would revlove around defeating these heroes one by one while also trying to prove that he isn't the bad guy in the situation while very much looking like the bad guy. And the real villain in the end turns out to be some scummy News CEO (Think Jame Jonah Jameson) type person attempting to smear Megaminds name for his own personal profit and fame while also getting the heroes out of his way so he can do basically whatever he wants.
@@wandereringshadow8658 Reasons why I think the premise wouldn't be a good idea:
1. Metroman and Megamind are there only two aliens present in the movie's universe, and the lack of heroes is a major plot point in the first movie; the existence of a "Justice League" would just make their absence in the first movie very confusing.
2. Megamind has already been misjudged based on superficial traits, which is what made him into a villain in the first place, and what he overcomes by the end of the first movie; doing it again in the sequel would be a step back.
3. While it makes sense that a group of heroes would suspect a villain suddenly become a hero and taking over a city, they could just keep tabs on him in case he does something bad; a confrontation would be unnecessary.
4. The idea of a corporate character pulling strings behind the scenes as a low profile antagonist is already a hero movie trope; playing cliché superhero premises straight would make Megamind just become the very thing it parodies.
5. Based on the premise alone, the conflict would be mostly a physical challenge, with an already resolved plot point for its narrative context. Megamind has already faced the physical challenge of being a hero by fighting Titan, and, with your premise proposition, there is no character development to be had for Megamind, or any struggle for him as a person, so there still is no justification for the existence of such a sequel.
Watching the first Megamind then the second one right after is like watching a beautiful masterpiece be painted only to then have someone kick thorough the canvas right after
Nah, at least a kick would be quick. I feel like it is more like patiently watching the paint dry, proud and joysful of what was just created,just for a drunk guy to then come and start peeing on it. While you're unable to stop him due to the shock of what's happening.

I think you're totally right about the time gap between the two releases, the audience of kids that would have been interested in this kind of output immediately after the first movie are grown up now. The trailer for this new sequel had that tagline "You're welcome!", I think they made this with more mature fans in mind... and well, it's not gone over well at all.
Also a terrifying realization, you had said that the screenwriters of Doom Syndicate didn't understand the first Megamind? They literally are the same writing team. Either there's been a massive fluke, or there was some EXTREMELY heavy studio interference.

Even though Megamind deserved the success of Despicable Me, I feel its success later on in life was meant to be. It feels like it hasn't aged at all and only gets better with each year. And it doesn't need anything else associated with it if it doesn't have Will Ferrell.
And if there was a need for a sequel, this piece of shit was not it.
It made more sense when Megamind and Metroman were the only 'super' characters, considering the fact that they're basically aliens on a regular Earth, where other superheroes/villains are never mentioned to even exist. The Doom Syndicate (and the annoying kid sidekick they added) not only stick out like a sore thumb due to their awful designs that seemingly came from another franchise entirely, but it also messes with the original rules of the first movie. While it would've been cool to see a GOOD Megamind sequel after BoD, the movie worked great being a standalone self-contained story.
One of the KEY ASPECTS of the original Megamind was that his seemingly "egotistical" nature was a direct result of him trying to cope with the lack of love and attention he received from those around him. When he's alone though you can clearly see him being down on himself and feeling inadequate...
But the writers of the sequel obviously didn't understand that.

It depends on how you define iconic. The point is that, while Megamind is certainly a beloved film, it never had the chance to become a global phenomenon or large franchise, and honestly I think that's for the best. It's a well-written, self-contained story that never really needed to be continued or expanded upon, and over time it's found it's audience.
I don't mind it being a franchise, as long as they put the hard work and do something decent. But it's clear that with this, they didn't even bother to try
Weirdly the movie and show look worse than shows like Legends Of Awesomeness. I don't completely blame the animators because they were clearly rushed and likely a smaller team.
And theres some info that the budget for this is so low they couldnt get the people who worked on the first film like the VA's, the animators and artists and etc.

Megamind’s one of those movies that don’t really need a sequel cuz the story and character arc of the protagonist wrapped up in the first movie that started it all. Unlike Dreamworks franchises like Shrek and Kung Fu Panda that can expand the lore and develop the character furthers since their first movies left room for more stories to be told. Megamind came across as a one and done film and should’ve stayed that way
Honestly you could say the same for Puss in Boots. The movie's main plot and arc ended. Puss got the adventure he want Humpty died a hero, he and Kitty get together plus no-one was asking for a sequel since the first film didn't blow anyone's minds
But Last Wish proves that even stuff that no-one cared about at first before marketing can turn to gold if the filmmakers are given the time and resources to craft a good story

Yeah, fun fact: this movie was written by the SAME PEOPLE WHO MADE THE FIRST. The fact that they fumbled this bad is anomalously astounding.
100% agree on Megamind and the Incredibles resonating more with older audiences while still being fun for kids. Both films are still some of my all-time favorites to this day.
Also, I would genuinely recommend Tales of Arcadia. It was the only show from Dreamworks in the 2010s that wasn't based on a pre-existing film or franchise. It was a completely original animated series overseen by Guillermo del Toro of all people, and ended up kickstarting its own cinematic universe with three separate shows following different protagonists and their connected individual experiences in the fictional city of Arcadia Oaks. It's a phenomenal series (except for the movie. We don't talk about the movie), but it sadly never saw the success of the other established-franchise tie-ins that Dreamworks put out alongside it.

I'm a major fan of the movie Labyrinth (in case my pfp didn't give it away lol). Everyone in the Labyrinth community (or everyone I have ever spoken to since 1995, when I first saw the movie) says they would never want a sequel. There are been countless rumors of it getting a sequel over the years, but they were never true. If you know the movie, you probably understand why that is. It's a cult classic for a reason. One major reason is David Bowie, who plays Jareth the Goblin King. No on else could ever capture the character the way he did. Plus the story is perfect as-is. It's a movie that stands alone, and we love imagining all the possible sequels, but we don't want an "official" one... We don't want anyone else playing our beloved characters.
If DreamWorks wanted to include internet jokes into their new Megamind movie and show, they should’ve did a 13 year time skip much like in real life.
That way, the internet jokes would makes sense and that Megamind is a boomer.
Here's something I would have done if I was given the task to make a megamind sequel first things first I would re-watch the original film 2 to 3 different times so I can get a really good grasp on what the concept of megamind is about
Then I would bring in the Doom syndicate into the sequel but give them a new origin story making the megamind video game not canon to the franchise at all which is perfectly fine since nobody really played it or cared about it
Possibly give them new designs to make them more intimidating as villains
And give them a new origin story an origin story that could be as simple as this
One of the members of the Doom syndicate could be a scientist while other folks could be random civilians who happen to have gotten power similar to that of what we see in the actual sequel itself but they actually look interesting
The first try to use their powers to mess with megamind and then they tried to take it a step further of trying to take over the city and possibly the entire world and megamind and his new crew have to stop him
For that girl character who's meant to be a sidekick I do one of two things either write her out of the story entirely or try to make her either be a parody of the sidekick archetype while also making her an interesting character in her own right that makes her worthy of being part of this new team megamind tries to form with her and Roxanne along with minion speaking of him I would also have him keep his name
Another thing I would do is that if I want to make it as a sequel where it expands upon the themes and ideas that the first film did I would take the themes of the first film did and expand on them without contradicting the original themes and characterizations of how the characters were in the first movie (basically not pulling a Toy story 4)
I will expand upon its themes and ideas that the original film had did without making the characters feel out of character or without retreading the same ground
That is probably what I would do if I were to be given the task of making a true megamind sequel it probably won't be perfect but it'll at least be something
Even if I wouldn't have the budget of the first movie to work on a project like this I would at least put some form of care into it as not only a standalone movie but as a true sequel to megamind if I were to be given that task

Edit: I’ve said this once before. I think the doom syndicate could have worked, but not as an old team of Megamind. Instead, what the story should have been was Megamind tried to join them once in his loneliness, but they rejected him because they were not impressed and like everyone else, thought he was too weird. And now that he is a hero who once defeated metroman, then tighten, they escape prison and finally want him to join, but this time he rejects because he likes his new life as a hero, and now they become his enemies due to him rejecting them to be a hero now.
I wish they'd explore his childhood more

I need more people to talk about Dreamworks TV. It has so many children's TV shows. Shitty spinoffs, great and award winning franchises like Tales of Arcadia created by Guillermo del Toro, unexpectedly good reboots such as Voltron, She-Ra and Carmen Sandiego.

Idk why DreamWorks needed another franchise esspacily when the audience mostly forgot about it with like a 14 year wait
People did not talk about Kung Fu Panda's recent show as much as this cuz unlike Megamind they got people who worked on the movies to work on this and got the original cast to replise their roles
The dragon knight actually picked up pretty well in season 3. The animation is not the best but the story and the mystery really gripped me as it went on but it is weird that it did not get the same animation quality as paws of destiny. But when blade's brother was revealed to be a twist villian I was on the fence at first because it did not seem to make sense since from what we knew about him he seemed content just trying to protect england but as the season went on it really started to grow on me and in the stroy there is something about him being undead which may have changed him but they don't lean into it too much but besides that i think they did a great job turning Alfie into a believeable villian whose want to protect helps move the plot in an interesting way.
We dont want more megamind we want more movies like megamind.

As someone who didn't hate this film to death, it is indeed sad to see such a good original film followed by a direct-to-video sequel that fails to see where the beauty of the first chapter lies.

I feel the only lore that warrants expanding on could be their parents. They could pull an invincible where Metromans parents visit earth and are the villains. But the whole theme of the movie was who deserves to be a hero and how that effects relationships. Metroman, megamind and Titan are all different spins on that theme. So the sequel should evolve these in a smart and bigger way, similar to how Kung Fu panda 2 was an evolution of the themes of 1
Megamind Rules is marginally better than the cheap CG of Monsters vs Aliens The Series and I binged through that season.
Still think Megamind would get marginally less backlash if they went straight to the series without any TV movie.

Personally, I think there's potential for more Megamind stories if you simply expand the world. Like Shrek did.
You can tell a story about the wider villain community learning of Metroman's "death" and inviting Megamind into their circle, making him question what he really wants. Or you can tell a story about Megamind wanting to fit in with the superhero community but struggling to be accepted as who he is.
Somehow megamind model in the "sequel" manage to make his propotion looks so awkward while the original look natural

Megamind came out 14 YEARS AGO in 2010, anyone who grew up with that movie is an adult now, or at least old enough that any sort of Megamind continuation would have to be aimed more at a mature audience. This new show & movie are so obviously aimed at younger kids, and stuff made for young children isn’t necessarily immediately awful, but I just don’t see the appeal in making this for children when a lot of Megamind’s appeal is it’s strong writing and subversion of tropes. Superhero movies have evolved quite a bit since 2010, to the point that I think there’s a limited possibility that a modern Megamind story could work. I have no idea how, but the way they went about it was NOT EVER going to work. The shoddy animation definitely didn’t help.

The Fast and the Furious should've ended when its lead actor, Paul Walker, died. It's such a zombified franchise and it makes me a little ill whenever I see a trailer for a new one come out.
I did enjoy this movie but, i had already had the experience most people had eith this show for the first time with Legends of Awesomeness. I expected things to go wack and out of cannon because... Where do you can logically go to make this better or keep track eith the og? I laughed at how absurd and weird most of it was because its what i expected. Low quality. Meh jokes. And... I do like the theme song for the show. I think the VA were pretty good overall, even if they didnt sound like the originals. I also liked learning new things about the characters. I think the falling grace was definitely the wonky timeline was its biggest downfall. Jow you make my boy go thru the SAME character arch with Minion TWICE IN LESS THAN A WEEK. Disrespect. I even like the design of the doom Syndicate. They adorable, like those terrible crocodiles from kung fu panda that nobody remembers in the movies.
IF Dreamworks decides SUDDENLY to make a big budget movie... Idk what they would do cos they prett much wrote themselves into a corner. UNLESS this show is completely scrapped because it would not work timeline wise. And the only thing i could think of would be... More dynamics with metroman and megamind about their existence and how to move forward now that they both have a reason in the world.

I truly feel...the only way this works is if it's like the penguins of madagascar and is absolutely an unhinged alt universe that we can all forget about after it ends also...please fix the models, roxannes arms are so big and stretched and it is all i can see she had slapping hands...and you could get closer to the original voice actor....he sounds like a sleezy sniveling shrew.... and....i honestly don't like minion's name change... it doesn't make much sense of a sthing to happen off camera, in a way the name minion is essential to his character, the name to directly contrast what he actually is....the name is minion but what he is is megamind's best and only friend....and minion loved his name as much as he loved his friend otherwise well, he obviously could've asked for it to be changed at any point...there is no reason he'd be named minion in the first movie if he felt so underappreciated
