Two other improvements. Buy a cheap harbor freight tarp, to go onto bed first, spray a can using silicone spray onto bed and tarp! It will become more slippery and easier to move the load!

Had the exact same problem and almost the exact same fix. Instead of putting a piece of pipe inside the original flimsy one, I replaced it with a solid steel 1" bar. I also had to make a couple diagonal pieces to wedge between the tailgate and the box. The bumper strap wasn't strong enough.

The next step is to find a way to use a drill or hammer driver to turn the wrapping rod. You need quite a bot of torque, so you'd have to have a reducing gear or something. Boy, that would be nice.

Since I see you have a mill at your disposal. It looks like you need to make yourself a longer handle or a couple reduction gears to make it easier for you. Plus i would put a tarp down before I would put something as fine as dirt in the tailgate.
That way you dont have to dig out your truck bed around your your wheelwells. Also I woudnt want to be the one following you as dirt falls thru the cracks of the bed. That if a rock falls and cracks my whidsheild you can be sure ur that I will have your insurance buyvme a new one.
