Why the ugliest boat ever? - Ep117 - The Sailing Frenchman

  • Pretty or not is a all about taste, but why is the bow of my boat rounded is the real question.
    The scow is a design which has been around for more than a hundred years but only recently they have been introduced into offshore racing sailboats design. More power, less drag, more comfortables, not much to disagree with, and the boat is fast for sure!

    Good informative video. I have not followed Minis since 2001 ! One more advantage of the scow type hull is that there is less asymmetry in the immersed part of the hull when heeled. I do prefer the pointy hulls, but these scow hulls with foils are just awesome.

    In my opinion the most important factor, is that in the capsize test, the boat floats differently (bow down/up), allowing for more sail power and canting keel angle, which benefits performance; as you have more power to sail, it compensates for the less efficient shape. Also, the boat tends to sail on the side narrow chains, to use the rest of the body as a lever.

    You didn’t mention the advantage of more internal space for sail storage and better sleeping options. I think that it is awesome. There are a lot of traditional Dutch barge boats with the rounded bow style. And there are other performance advantages when healed to do with the immersed shape of the hull against the wide stern wedge shaped hulls which are slightly pushing their keels sideways through the water.

    I’m just starting to look at sailing. It’s unfortunate, for those of us beginners, that your accent in English sounds like (and in closed caption) turns “planing” into “planning.” I think that performance during planing is crucial. It makes sense to me that this hull form is very functional, since performance of the heeling boat hull while planing is very dynamic and stability of this hull during that dynamic situation reduces drag at the bow (where it is not needed).

    This comment is very late, so I don't know if it will be seen. But my understanding was that the scow hull form created more form stability, with a lot more buoyancy to leeward compared to a more conventional monohull form, almost like a catamaran. And so more sail carrying power. This was not mentioned in the video. This was certainly the reason the hull form was used on inland lake racing scows in the United States, like the big A scows.

    Your boat looks great- good luck sailing it. These boats need less open cockpit and more protection for the crew. When heeled over water comes back along the topside into the cockpit. When planing the bow wave moves aft and dumps water onto the crew. I see this on video- I dont sail!! An enclosed cockpit would be safer for long voyages like the Mini Transat, classe 6.50 should also have more electronics and long range radio- HF or Iridium because they sail so far across the ocean. What do you think?

    • @mkapo8509
      @mkapo8509 Před 4 lety +1

      That is the whole point of class, no communication except vhf, and sbb radio, it started as cheap offshore racing in 70... And it is not sailed by amateurs, the qualifications are quite rigorous, racing + 1000 miles solo trip that needs to be approved to be able enter main A course. Basically the point of no modern communication you have no idea where your main competition is you receve distance to finish over sbb radio + whether forecast, and in main race minitransat they have companion ships( class 40 50) for every 6 small they need to have one big that is checking on them + they have beecons which have like 3 position + tracker. 1 position is on second is on I'm fine but have dificultys but want no assistance and last one is come save me. And off all competitors are wearing personal location become, but to be frank most of them know if you fell of from ship it is most likely an end, so they form small packs and radio one another to keep an eye, some share racing stuff to, some no, but most of them are like family and know they need to keep eye on another and support... There was even pettition to stop government wanting to put sat phones in minis, if they are to be made mandatory it will be race over if use since it goes against spirit of race, small boat as fast as possible across the pond without outside assistance and vhf only :) even gps werent allowed, but most of participants had them so they sad ehh well then... as of enclosed cockpits it would be unnecessary weight since all boats must right them self and they perform the test before race, so by ading enclosed cocpit it would be to cramped since in cabin you are on knees or siting down laying, or to tall and if water gets in boat more space would be required for flotationd foam again mandatory in zones to keep boat afloat(sometimes when they abandon the ship in race by bad decision or medical reasons, demage to rudders keel problem, they keep on floating and get to Caribbean and get recovered pogo 2 was this year found or atlast video of was put on) but to be fair it is nice that they are seaworthy if damaged and abandon they are hazardous for other ships, but point was to make them as safe as possible for skipper to survive in worst conditions... The history of mini class or open 6.5 if rich an quiet fascinating, tbh, 1998 was taught year for them and they made qualifications real difficulty for a reason, in recent years 2013 was heavy weather and hard allso... Sry for typos not native language, will stope here can type to tommorow 😁

      @@hwntwww They would , but government dosent allowed them to leave French waters, so they would shoot on minis instead of air for start :) to be fair most of time minis are flying on autopilots, you trim sail stac everything if you are racing and off to sleep, helm during the battery charging period, in general the point of race is to find the limit of boat and your self and ride there without braking either boat or your self... And even in worst case scenario boat are safe unless they hit ufo to demage keel boreken ruder you have 2 so if lucky you will be good, and if unlucky and you didn't reinforced transom (weight saving) might be in trouble, but you have life raft and survival course + tps suite... Point is as I said they are not boats for casual sailors, or at least in main race adventures chilling are in back and sailing in comfort zone cliped in by sling(lunatics for weekend sailors) while the top guys are pushing it to the limit, last edition top series boat first non French winer was keeping it up with top prototype while the others in series boat division were few days behind but then again maybe that is why he won... If crossing Atlantic I would rather be in mini than bigger normal boat if the things are about to go bad and that says enough for boat and class... Bigger boat would be more comfy in ideal situations tho :)

      @@mhensen1 you need to visualize the underwater profile of the hull as it heels past 15 deg when beating upwind.
      At that heel angle the entrance angle of the bow section is no longer as widely rounded as when the boat sits upright.
      These scows actually pound more when broad reaching than when beating to windward.

      @mhensen1 Před 4 lety

      Fesh Fesh Sailing wow, that’s cool, never thought of that, I envisioned them pounding straight, but you’re right when heeled, much narrower profile, so are you saying this type of hull could work for other types of sailboats rather than out and out racers? I figured it was like a formula one, not good for stop and go...

      David Raison designed these series boats to be built by IDBmarine as the Maxi. Previously this design was in the proto class (winning quite a bit).

    En anglais le "planning" don't tu parle se dit et se prononce "playning". Si tu dis "planning" les gens qui parlent anglais vont se demander ce que cela avoir avec la planification d'un projet et pourquoi ton bateau fait "des plans".
    Donc dis "planing" qui se prononce "playing" come dans "aeroplane" (avion). Merci pour tes vidéos géniales.

    It seems like it would also be a good design for a cruising boat, as you would have a lot more volume inside especially in the front berths.

    • @shanehnorman
      @shanehnorman Před 4 lety +1

      Cruisers need headroom as well and this is way too shallow-draught to give much of that. Also, with such a shallow and flat forefoot, it must slam a lot going to windward, which would be very uncomfortable - and, therefore, tiring - for cruising. None of which matters in a racer!

      Super lightweight hull this is a pure racer. Adding cruising fittings and accessories would make it too heavy.

    Will also make a wonderful conversion to a cruiser once its racing career is over, I had an old 1/4 tonner that was similarly distorted by rules making it short beamy and high aspect ratio rig put an outboard on the back and 5 bunks raised cabin and viola a family holiday boat.

  • @colingenge9999
    @colingenge9999 Před 4 lety +1

    The camera was being held on the persons face which was entirely irrelevant while scanning past the boat’s underwater lines so fast that we couldn’t see the important part of the video which was the hull shape.
