I'm Pascal a Dutch independent game developer since 2004 known as Orangepixel. I created various games including Residual, the Gunslugs series, Heroes of Loot series, Space Grunts series, Stardash and the Meganoid series released on PC, mobile and various consoles.
To be honest Web Games is the way for new indie games, crazygames poki and more big income out there.
For sure! If you can do web builds curtainly something to look into
Such a good list. Didn't know of at least two of them. Thanks Pascal!
Oh, then I'm glad I made the video 🫡
Thanks for this, much knowledge!
Just a little knowledge 😉
Nice overview, thank you for sharing your vast experience in the subject!
You're welcome
Thanks a lot for the info! I am solo dev as well! It's awesome to see your catalog of games. Truly inspiring!
Glad I inspire every now and then 😁
thanks for sharing this!
No Problem!
Thank you for your insights! :)
You're welcome
cool video, thanks for sharing, google and apple have a 15% cut instead of 30% if you are below certain revenues, but it's not automatic you need to apply for it !
Oh right, that happened at some point!
Cool stuff! Thanks!!!
👍😎
I just realized I wasn't subscribed to you although I watch a lot of your content. Now I did.
Glad we got that fixed! 😁
Dankje Pascal!
Great video, GOG = Good Old Games btw :p
That makes sense! That’s why only there you find those cool Amiga 500 games
@@nandojol if you like homm3, that's the only place that has it proper, too - all extensions + allowing for all the mods. No fan would buy it from Steam, where it's only the base game, and no way to mod.
@@tymondabrowski12😂 that’s the only reason I have ever used them.
Ooopoh right, for some reason that just never sticks!
@@orangepixelgames a moment later you even said "good old days" when talking about apogee :D
Good vid! Not just Mac/Win store - check the genres & demographics of any platform to see if you match. You can find some real "blue oceans" that way. Few devs take the time to jump through hoops, but if you build your systems through a shim - like a generic layer for achievements, saves, etc - it's more straightforward to build for add'l platforms.
Still have to consider the cost of labor and whether it's worth it to actually support that platform/those users moving forwards. A lot of platforms require you to keep up with their changes annually.
Yup, and as mentioned, my main issue is that I need all my games there to sometimes reach payout thresholds. So that's often a lot of work to get it onto a 'new' store. So many things to consider, but I do feel like many devs ignore it too much!
I am surprised you didn't mention VCS considering you have mentioned publishing there in some of your previous videos.
It counts as both an Android manufacturer-owned platform, like Samsung & Amazon, and as a console 👍
@mandisaw It's not running android. It's running a custom Linux OS based on Ubuntu. It probably has more in common with the Steam Deck.
@@n00bc0de7 Oh, I thought it was Android OS based on how many folks talked about playing Android games on it. If it was Linux that makes a bit more sense for why it didn't go far.
@@mandisaw It was always going to be niche since it was targeted at people with a lot of nostalgia for Atari. It being niche can work in a developer's favor because you don't have a lot of competition on that platform.
@@n00bc0de7 True, true!
There is one advantage of Windows Store and that is that some versions of Windows - usually in some schools etc. - don't allow for installing anything from outside of Windows Store. But that's probably still more relevant to software than games.
One disavantage is absolutely no one ever bought a game from that store, and probably won't ever do it😂
That's a good point, although not sure how much that does for game sales (got a feeling it's very little) 😉
😅
I actually like the unedited style, it's more personal and authentic 😊. It's kinda funny to see the mistakes anyway lol 😂
Haha yeah and it does save me some time, so might do it more often 😁
I tend to set my payout thresholds to minimum, helps avoid accounting issues at year-end when transactions rollover. But hadn't thought about non-US devs - is it the bank charging a forex fee, or something your gov't is doing?
It's fake bank reasoning for international transfers. It makes no sense, but they get away with it. And it's a fixed fee, no matter what the amount is.
@@orangepixelgames Ouch! Sounds like fallout of the web of anti-laundering laws, combined with a little bank-greed 😣
Thanks for releasing macOS versions on Steam! That's better than most Indies.
Itch is the true indie dev hub it’s just the best and the community is super supportive, the only thing is there are so many incredible free games on there my crappy game doesn’t even stand a chance to sell...
That is one of the few 'bad' things about Itch for sure
If Itch's backend is heavenly, and it is, Steam's experience is clunky at best.
We need more options besides Steam . Monopolys aren't Good For Competition
We got more options, they just aren't as good, mostly cause of players and audience preferring Steam over anything
Epic sales are BAD... not sure how either but some ppl get my game for like 3usd when its meant to be 9.99.
Weird!
But I’ve also heard that those two Mac users have money! 😂
It's a trade-off. Every add'l platform means integrating their API/features, "localizing" for their look & feel (UI names & buttons), and support & maintenance for as long as you'll be on that store. My exp has been that Mac & iOS users need a lot more support than Windows & Android users, and Apple itself is increasingly hostile to small devs.
Plus now you've got multiple chip architectures (Intel & M-series) and new graphics systems (Metal) to build/debug for.
So yeah, maybe Mac & iPhone users _might_ have more money, but if it costs you more in labor to build for them than you'd ever make back due to smaller numbers, then it's not worth it. Most gamers on MacOS use a Windows emulator like Wine anyway. (Same is true for Linux.)
Ha! Yeah that is true, just have to wonder what those two Mac users prefer to play 😁
@4:08 😂😂😂
😜
Funny but .... just a small bit of editing just a small bit 21 - or so - just a small bit - thx for the making this
Needs more editing? 🤔🧐😁
What about Facebook? It used to have a lot of players. Great video.
Not really a game store is it? 🤔 They have playable games, so I guess it falls under the web-games options. Which is a whole other world! (But an interesting one)
@@orangepixelgames yeah, you are right. It's not a store. Have you ever uploaded a game there?
@@saulnores3477 no, I don't have the right type of games for that
@@orangepixelgames I understand. Great video again.
