  • How did Walt Disney inspire the design of Disneyland's Big Thunder Mountain?
In this episode of Distory, we head back to Disneyland to learn about how Imagineer Tony Baxter had to adapt the design of the iconic Big Thunder Mountain for a park it wasn’t intended for. Along the way, we learn the truth about some fossilized wood, dust off a few old National Geographic magazines for inspiration, and hear the original backstory of Jason Chandler. We also take a side trip to Discovery Bay and explore how Geyser Falls (and then Geyser Mountain) would have tied in thematically with the attraction we know and love today. Kirk takes notes on Kate’s begrudging acceptance of a former Disney CEO, Kate waxes poetic about how we view fear in rides and impossibility, and somewhere along the way Missy Elliott’s (fictional) influence on Big Thunder’s ride layout forever changes the way we view attraction.
