Who is Russell for me? The GOAT of defense. He is a player who is probably one of the best team leaders ever, and someone who has superb athleticism as well as a really high basketball IQ. His most underrated attribute is his offensive skillset. And you can see that in this video.
Terrific stuff, thanks! I believe that Bill gets underrated nowadays, which is just a shame and sometimes disrespectful. Even for all the praise he gets, you always have someone trying to belittle his accomplishments using all types of narratives (even saying ridiculous things like.. that he CAN’T be top5 or whatever)! Facts are clear.. Boston wasn’t winning championships before he got there, and they didn’t win for like 4 seasons immediately after he retired.. while they won ELEVEN with him. That alone should tell you A WHOLE LOT. They even won with him as a player-coach. Celtics were the #1 defense in the league for 10 out of those 11 championships, and #2 for 1.. and guess who was far and away their best, most impactful defensive player, even the best defensive player in the league? Mr Russell ofc! Meanwhile they were NEVER a top3 offense for any of those titles, and only top5 for like 3! They didn’t win it all, ofc. Then with Bill, first year.. they’re the #1 defense while the #5 offense… and win it all! But even so.. he was ALSO a floor general out there on offense, don’t get it twisted. He could really pass the ball and move it around, knew how the offense should go, wasn’t hogging it and played to everyone’s strengths, wasn’t doing stuff out of his range, knew how to start or finish the break, played within the flow of the offense, and he was a pretty good scorer whenever necessary! Had a hook shot and some post moves, could handle the rock and attack the rim. Hit jumpshots here and there. He was top20 in scoring 7 times. Top10 in assists per game.. 4 times! Once 5th. He’s 2nd all-time in minutes per game only behind Chamberlain. He was his team’s best player for the majority of ELEVEN rings! Their leader. That’s why he was the one winning MVP’s; he has 5 of them! And would’ve gotten at least 6 FMVP’s if the award was given out back then! Plus, he would’ve had the most DPOY’s ever if also that award was around back then. Get that in your head: in 13 seasons.. a player with 11 titles, 5 MVP’s, like 6 FMVP’s, like 7 DPOY’s, 12x All-Star, 11x All-NBA (in a time WITHOUT a 3rd team)!!! People love to talk about competition and number of teams or whatever BS narrative.. he dominated his competition to the maximum! Nothing more he could do. He couldn’t change stuff, just play with the cards he was dealt, let’s say. And the fact is that he won 11 rings in 13 seasons (as their leader and best player, for the most part)! He had some great competition too, and with less teams, he had to face the best more often than not. Bill was also a champion and top tier player in college!! And lead the USA to an Olympic gold medal (while being the leader in points)! Plus, nowadays he would’ve had access to modern training, modern medicine, modern equipment, modern shoes, all the luxuries and money, not dealing with tremendous injustices (his own house was broken into!), so on and so forth…….
Once Boston got Russell and Heinsohn (drafted in the same draft, Celtics got super lucky), it was over, the Celtics had as perfect of a team that you can get.
