- Day 1 of our three-day trip around the Mt Anne Circuit in Tasmania’s Southwest National Park, where we scale and traverse Mt Eliza, setup camp on the narrow rocky ledge of Shelf Camp, and climb the Southwest’s highest peak, Mt Anne itself.

This is amazing. So well put together. My fear of heights is too great to ever attempt this, so thanks for showing a bit of Tassie I probably won’t get to summit.
Great video! Very informative. Hope you'll find the time to make ep.2 :)
That brings back memories of our early ‘80’s reverse circuit over Lightning ridge and camp at Shelf camp. Scrambling up Mt Anne’s ice covered rocks added another dimension to “exposure”. We believed we were the first to take a video recording from the summit. Incidentally, the water cascading over the rocks at Shelf camp were frozen, making the overnight stay feel like sleeping in a freezer. I can’t tell you how good it felt in the morning to be warmed by the sunrise.
Sounds pretty awesome! Mark Oates has done some amazing winter trips to Mt Anne in recent years (markoates.exposure.co/mt-anne?more=true#!), depending on who you ask Mt Anne is easier to climb with a solid cover of snow and ice! We're hoping to do a bit of a ski mountaineering trip to the Mt Eliza Plateau this coming winter, will maybe push onto Shelf Camp but very much dependent on good conditions. As you say, it can be a helluva freezer!
Yes I remember that first initial bit....crapped my pants!!I was going to pull out but this French guy was with me and he climbed "The Hillary Step" (as I call it) ...So I thought if he can do it , so can I...Once past that it was relatively OK...I remember at the top trying to call Geelong Footy club to get through to Paddy Dangerfield for helping to save my daughter from drowning at Moggs Creek (yes i was in Tassie and my family had a crisis!) . I think what was worse was the climb back down...I didn't know whether to face forward or body to the rock wall coming down "The Hillary step"....that was the worst part!! So well done guys in doing it....and great to see you back on channel!!!!
Thanks Marty! Yeah it’s definitely an awkward climb and descent in parts, thinking back I actually felt more exposed in a couple of areas than I did on the entire Direct Ascent on Federation Peak (which I’ve done twice now). Most people would probably disagree on that one (!) but there’s certainly a few rocks on Anne that slope the ‘wrong way’ for comfort.
by the way...wheres Day 2?@@benderandxing
@@martyfelber6102coming sometime soon ;-)
Hey - thanks. Great to see the team back on CZcams. No need to watch re-runs now!
So happy to see you two back as one
Yay! Thanks for finishing this guys. Great video. Keen to see the next parts 👍
You motivated us to get them finished. Let’s hope it’s not 12 months before the second part is released 😉
Good to see you here Aaron 👍😎
Patiently waiting for the next part 🫣🫣
Such great scenery! Thanks for sharing your hike.
Definitely worth a trip to Tassie to give a few hikes a go I reckon
Amazing climb. It was great talking to you this afternoon Ben. Thanks for all those insights. I agree with that route you took.
Likewise Steve! Good luck with your own trip - hope you get out there soon :-)
Outstanding work, guys - better you than me!
Wow! Thanks for that, beautiful footage. I'm heading up there in February, so it was great to see this vid 👍
Thanks Kat :-) Best of luck with your trip!
Welcome back!!! What a beautiful place to make you video come back. Awesome as always 👏🏻👏🏻
Thanks Bert!!
Beautiful. My wife and i were there in late November last year. We made it most of the way but had to turn back because the conditions became very windy and delivered some horizontal snow, making the rock too slippery to grip onto. The walk up Eliza was absolutely worth it though. Will certainly be back
Yep, it’s a stunning place but definitely not fun in bad weather. Very, very exposed. We had some friends have to bail recently when they were nearly blown off Shelf Camp! 😮
Loved the footage guys! The new track work looks impressive!
It is - no wonder it took so long for the circuit to reopen!
Fantastic to see you both back on CZcams! Missed watching your adventures!
Thanks :-)
Great work guys. An amazing place.
Thanks! It sure is 😁
It was nearly 40 years ago, but I still have clear memories of climbing (just) that cleft up from the ledge. Still not sure how I did it!
This is great! Thanks for sharing 😃
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great to see the channel back in action, mate 🎉 Thoroughly enjoyed this one, too!
Thanks Oliver! Will try and keep the videos coming out ;-)
Love this video.
Hi guys, am so loving your videos - thank you! Such a great resource for those of us who get to Tassie less often to help with planning etc.
I was wondering if you had produced any for the subsequent days of the Mt Anne Circuit as I only seem to be able to find Day 1?
Thanks Tanya! Days 2 and 3 are still sitting on the hard drive awaiting editing - we've struggled with free time over the past year or so. We're planning to restart a more regular upload schedule in the coming months. Until then Xing has a very comprehensive write up at www.adventuresofxing.com/mount-anne-circuit
Great, many thanks for the link and recommendation! Look forward to your future updates, Tanya
Nice timing B&X got my ticket for next week. Good work as always.
Thanks Eddy :-) Good luck with your trip!
I understand the height issue. On my first (and only) trip to Mt Anne in the early 80s, that ledge was covered in snow and ice, and we were in thick fog. Ignorance is bliss, in this case. The fog cleared once we reached the summit, but there's no way I could have made the climb if I'd seen the fall from the ledge.
Hehe I had a similar experience on my first trip out to Frenchmans Cap. We were in complete fog from Vera onwards, probably wouldn’t have been jumping off rock ledges quite as freely if I could see the drop offs :-p The second trip out was a bit of a revelation… ‘oh… oooh ok that’s a bit of a fall…’ 🤪
Another beautifully constructed video Bender, congratulations, we were there April 22, unfortunately we couldn’t find the correct track to the final Mt Anne summit. Looking forward to your Day 2 edit. We all agreed that this is the most amazing adventure we had experienced. Is Mt Lot the most underrated mountain in Australia? Just when you think it can’t get much better, then it does. #gottaloveTassie
Thanks Robert :-) Actually Xing did a fair bit of the work on this one, the initial cut languished on her iPad for about 7 months until a fellow CZcamsr "encouraged" us to finally get around to finishing it! Mt Lot is indeed awesome, as is the entire route from The Notch along Lightning Ridge down to Lonely Tarns. The view down to Lake Judd and Mt Sarah Jane is just sublime!
Where is part 2?
It’s coming…. eventually!
@@benderandxing ok thanks hope you two are well, take care be safe love from Hobart 🥾🍻💪
