Swanage Railway - 'Strictly Bulleid' Gala 01/04/2017

- To mark the 50th anniversary since the End of Southern Steam in the Summer of 1967, the Swanage Railway hosted their Spring Steam Gala with the theme of 'Strictly Bulleid', featuring the largest gathering of Bulleid Pacifics in preservation history.
The gathering saw 5 Bulleid light pacifics, of Original and Rebuilt design, working together for the first time since the end of steam on the Southern Region of British Railways' network, with services working regularly over the recently upgraded crossing at Norden Gates, and on the Wareham extension as far as the River Frome Bridge - the current limit of Swanage metals.

BR(S) 'West Country' Class - 34092 "City of Wells"
BR(S) 'Battle of Britain' Class - 34081 "92 Squadron"
Ex-SR 'Battle of Britain' Class - 34052 "Lord Dowding" (34046 "Braunton")
BR Standard Class 4MT Tank - 80146 (80104) was also running during the gala, acting as station pilot at Swanage, but is not featured in this video.

Amazing transformation since the days of 1972 😊.
In the early 1960s I was regularly taken to Esher station to watch the 'Bournemouth Belle' express rush by - drawn by one of these magnificent, beautiful Bulleids.. So pleased so many have been restored, with more of the way..
It hopefully won't be too long before we have our fleet of Bulleids represented in strength at Swanage, with two members close to operation.
Maybe biased, great video again and hats off to Swanage for this event!

Personally I love these bullied Pacific's, but for a loco that got such mixed reviews, there seems to be a great many that made it into preservation?
Same. Having worked on them in preservation, I love them. In total, there were 140 Bulleid Pacifics, so there was hardly a shortage in Barry Scrapyard. With most of these being withdrawn only in the final years, and even then not long into their serviceable life, they were among the better conditioned locos to be saved.
