BIDEN: "A lot can still happen!" Putin's spokesman's telling comment on the US earthquake
In view of a possible candidacy of Kamala Harris as the US Democratic presidential candidate, the Kremlin on Monday referred to the "unfriendly rhetoric" of the US Vice President. "We cannot evaluate Harris' potential candidacy (...) because her contribution to our relations has not been particularly noticeable so far - neither positive nor negative," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told journalists. However, Harris had "made statements with rather unfriendly rhetoric towards our country," he added. He did not provide any further details about the statements.
Like Biden, Harris has been a staunch supporter of Ukraine since Russia launched its large-scale military offensive in February 2022. Earlier this year, she said the death of opposition leader Alexei Navalny in custody was "another sign of the brutality" of Russian President Vladimir Putin. The vice president also described Russia's actions in Ukraine as "terrible atrocities," "cruel" and "inhumane."
Regarding US President Joe Biden's withdrawal from the race for the White House, Peskov said: "Everything that has happened in the US in recent years has taught us not to be surprised by anything." Therefore, Biden's withdrawal did not surprise Moscow very much either.
Biden announced on Sunday - less than four months before the US presidential election - that he was withdrawing from the race for the White House and proposed Harris as his successor.
