I think what really brings people to tears is the ending, revealing he wasn't always asleep when she rocked him and remembered the song by heart. Only to go back home to his own kids room and sing the same song to his kid, never wanting to break the cycle of unconditional love his mom gave him to carry on her memory (she most likely died that night or in his arms)

Robert Munsch wrote this after his wife gave birth to two stillborn babies. It was his way of healing. For those telling him off for the way he recites it....GO AWAY.

My mother used to read me this book every single night. From newborn to just a few weeks ago. Each and every single night she wouldn’t hesitate to tell me how much I meant to her. “I’ll love you forever, I’ll like you for always, as long as I’m living my baby you’ll be…” a few days ago she took her final breaths. Just moments before her passing, I read through the book. A single tear fell down her cheek. She looked at me, and that was it. I miss her so much. Mom, I’ll love you forever, I’ll like you for always, as long as I’m living…my mother you’ll be.

When I was 19 I went to a classmates funeral. When the mother gave her speech at the church. She began to read this book to us because she would read it to him as a baby. But stopped at the part where the son moved out of the house because she said this is as far as her and her son got. Up to that point I forgot my mother read that same book to me as a kid. I cried when the mother started reading it to us. Especially at every stage the mother and son went through.

People bring good from tragedy. If you want to say that god brings the good after the tragedy then you must also accept that god forced the tragedy on the victim in the first place.
So, did the god inflict the tragedy just so it could be andavioir after? That's a psychopath.
Or did the tragedy not come from the god? Then it's impotent.

He was 3 when she died i wonder if he remembers his mom. But i remember my teacher and how she introduced me to this book. And i had my mom read it to me when she was not busy working. The way he reads it is like someone who's lived this life with their kids already, but I interpret as him wishing this was the life he could have given his kid.

When I was a teacher, I would often read this book to my students before Mother's Day. There would be times, especially after my mothers death, that I couldn't go on. On one occasion one of my third grade students came up and finished the book. I feel sorry for the people that had negative, rude, and crude comments. One day this may haunt them. I think your writing, story telling, and lyric singing is perfect for the attended audience. 16 of my 28 years of teaching were in 1-3rd grade. I love kids and I'm not a Perv.

Some people don’t think teachers should say the phrase “I love you” to students because it is inappropriate. I’m with him though. Children are with their teachers many hours a week. My husband was her caregiver at the end of her life before and even after she moved into assisted living. Unlocked core memory! I remember this in sparse blips of memories, strongly the corny song. It had been bothering me recently for awhile and tried looking for it. Thanks to CZcamsr Peet, he unlocked it for me and I got to know what it was about.

Robert Munsch’s voice amuses me, especially when he says the predicate of his sentences.

Hang in there and try to remember she really will always love you. I am much older, but I find myself in a somewhat similar situation. It's so hard trying to deal with watching the effects of aging on those we love. I hope you find peace on this journey with her. Best wishes!
