Im just starting my youtube channel and im not in love with the image im getting from my 24-70 gmaster and been entertaining getting a 24mm 1.4 because i really want a sharp wide prime. I think the only logical sense from this trade is, you've got a much more expensive lens for a lot less. Other than that ...the rest of ur reasons don't make sense cos a prime has its place and a zoom lens has its place too. When shooting with a prime...ur mind shouldn't be even considering shots at other focal lengths. Also the decision to put on a prime lens on ur body in the first place is based on what you are about to shoot. If u r gonna be shooting a scene where u are the only photographer and the client is expecting a variety of photos, then u either have 2 bodies with primes on them or a single body with a zoom that covers the focal ranges of both the primes or have 2 photographers. So yea ...I think you need both..the prime and the zoom and use them as per requirement of the job. I think u know this and that the only real reason you went ahead with the deal is cos u were getting the better end of itl. With the money saved from the exchange, you are going to buy the 24mm 1.4 back in some time. Haha..only time will tell!

To me, 24mm has never been wide enough and 70mm never long enough. 24-70 is no doubt a range that I can do without. 16-35, 70-200 coupled with some primes was the way to go for me. Surely, this has been the case for me and my style of photography and might not be the best for many people out there.

When I first started doing weddings years ago, I used a 24-70 because that's what was taught to do. Years later when I switched to Sony, I traded my zooms for f/1.4 primes and two dual cameras. That kinda worked for a while, but then I got the Sigma 24-70 and used that for my weddings, and it's been such a relief! I forgot that I could cover 80% of the wedding day with just one camera and lens, and just switch to a 14-24 or 70-200 for the little bit of time that I would need them. The other advantage was that with that particular lens, the minimum autofocus distance is INSANELY close..like to the tip of the lens hood close, which makes it perfect for detail and pseudo-macro shots! Some say that primes are sharper than zooms, but that's relative. Some say that the bokeh is better on primes, but that's also relative, and dependent on personal preference. Sure, you'll get 2-stops of light difference for less noise, but the Sony files give lots of room for adjusting and noise reduction in editing. Regardless, it is always good to use the gear that works for YOU!

Thank you for this comment. I currently own 2 prime lenses from the sigma trio for my APS-C and I will upgrade to a full frame in the future. I shoot families on occasion but I mainly use my camera for making contents, as that’s how I am learning. Even in a controlled environment like mine, I already find changing lenses to be a hassle especially when I use a gimbal. I can imagine that being more so for you on your wedding shoots. I am definitely considering the 24-70. Cheers.

As if more is better and someone likes to carry like 20 kg of gear.2-3 lenses for event photography maybe if you need the low-light capability of a 1.4 prime or something.New modern zoom lenses are incredibly sharp and i´d say if you compare a excellent zoom with a mediocre prime with high aperture - i´d take the zoom. It all depends on ur needs and what genre you are specialised in. Landscape photographs mostly carry 2-3 lenses i´d say because if you travel and hike around areas - every pound you can save starts to count and you have the time to change lenses and arent in need of multiple bodies.

Yo Terry create video as always like to hear the opinion pieces and the perspective. But I definitely do see with the A7S3 that the shadows are opening up nicely what Kodak you using definitely more forgiving in the shadow area there like that. Peace

My wife and I just went the opposite direction. A big reason we can do that is that we have 2 camera bodies. So we will be using the 24mm f/1.4 and the 85mm f/1.4. We shoot a lot of low light type of situations and having the extra stop was important to us. That being said the 24-70mm is an amazing lens and it makes perfect sense for the trade.

Great thoughts. Just gotta say, the Sigma 24-70 is amazing BUT the dust accumulation inside is so bad 😭 I’m selling and getting the 24 1.4

  • @joelbechtolt
    @joelbechtolt Před 3 lety

I remember when you got that and I remember a *very* hyped man. You must mean what you say about that 24-70. I own the Canon L (their high end line, red ring around the front) versions of both their 24mm f1.4 and 24-70 f/2.8 and have experienced the same results. Sharp af and versatile. These days I only use the prime in the club. I do lots of party/crowd/on the dance floor shoots for a DJ company and it reigns supreme in that setting, but for everything else it’s the 24-70 or my 70-200L big grey lady. Zoom FTW if we’re talking high end copies like the G-Master and the L Series. Man your videos are getting better each time you release. Production on point.
(One critique: Yo. Got to your fonts folder on your computer and delete the following fonts: Arial, Comic Sans, and Papyrus. You’ll thank me later. They’re a punchline in the design world for a reason. Overuse, and by all the wrong people. I caught a whiff of Papyrus at the beginning. Said this out of love. Get a second opinion, ask any designer friend about those three fonts)

Subbed and loved, Terry, You should check out the mtf charts and see why the gmaster zooms are so good, also, check out the 135mm gm prime, its one of the sharpest lenses possibly ever made, of any brand.. Absolute beastmode of a lens.. Love the channel man!

I am also for the zooms just that they are expensive especially hm. And then maybe buy primes for favorite or rare focal lengths - for studio stuff. Outside run n gun situstion its annoying to change lenses yes. Though you can do so much iwth 20mm or 24mm

Saw the 16-35GM at Best Buy and it’s not as big as I expected. Loved the compactness of that zoom. But then again I have the 24-70GM so anything is going to be small for me lol.

Gangsta mode haha. I have the tamron 28-70 for my A7iii and the 17-28 for a7siii (in route). Hoping to be a good combo..perhaps sell the 17-28 for the Sony 20 at some point...but liking it so far, and the fact to really be able to ‘match’ cameras when i shoot events etc (since both will be Sony/Tamron). Now..will I be able to match the old a7iii colors with the new a7siii glory. Time will tell..haha. Good problems to have.

Having the same predicament, although don’t want sell my 24mm gm - unsure to either go for the 24-70gm or the Sigma 24-70! Only thing pointing me to the gm is that I saw a comment on Facebook that the sigma is prone to dust, not sure how true this is thou! Good review by the way I’m new to your channel!

    • @SubyTV

I heard this too. Sand gets in and you can’t get it out. The gm is better weather proofed. I’m torn between the gm or the sigma, £500 difference where I am.. which to go for!!!

Hey Terry, you make that 24-70 GM look good! I am weakling so I have the 24f1.4GM plus the Tamron 28-75. I am very happy with this combo but since I purchased those lenses the 20 f1.8G lens and now the new Sigma 24-70 have come out and that is a tempting combo. Don't overlook the Tamron 17-28 lens - super sharp but I wish it went to 35mm for versatility. You made a great trade!

I've been primarily using the 28-75 Tamron for all my freelance work (A mixture of theatre/corporate/b-roll segments for small businesses) and I'm looking to either get a 24mm or a 85mm... Not sure which one will help to add more versatility to my filming. I 95% of the time do video and feel that the 24mm (Thinking samyang or viltrox 1.8 oppose to the 1.4 purely cause of the price tag) may add that versatility of getting some wide shots + I could use it for my talking head videos I do on youtube. Do you have any advice for me? The 85mm 1.8 looks so tempting as well, but that would be more for my enjoyment in photography and not directly for my videography. Thanks in advanced!

@@ridhish.visuals The 24 f1.4 GM is a lovely lens and would probably give you much more versatility . Save up for it! 85f1.8 is nice but I rarely reach for it since I own zoom telephoto lenses that work just as well for portrait work and don't forget that you can always crop in with the Tamron - hope that helps!

My first lense was a sony 16-35 GM. Wish I would have went with the 24-70 GM. Much more versatile. I almost never shoot at 16mm. Mostly, 24-85mm. I did just pick up the 24mm GM. Havent got a chance to use it much. Hoping to over winter break. Thanks for the video. Watch out for those Zoom haters...!
