  • There is a great demand for cultural art in today’s market, with everything from clothing to home goods and jewelry featuring Native American-inspired designs. Unfortunately, the majority of these products are counterfeit, using appropriated designs by non-Native artists. Now, Louie Gong is reclaiming his heritage through Eighth Generation, a company that merges the traditional works of Native artists with a modern aesthetic.

    So many people missing the point here. This man isn't chastising anyone personally for buying other non-native made merchandise. He's merely expressing how it makes HIM feel so why are people attacking him? Is it so wrong that he would prefer the items representing his culture were made by his community? I would want to support them and not some corporation like Forever 21 that pays slave wages and produce shit quality.

      AuroraBorealis I would feel annoyed too about the fake native art. Oftentimes non natives take sacred symbols or designs and use them for profit without giving credit to or thinking about Native people.

    When the market reopens...I plan on stopping by here and supporting this place. I really want to learn more about the local Native American's in my area. I wish the tribes around here had festivals or did things to teach people about their culture...I can't find any information about any of that (and I looked before the outbreak).

US very simillar with ISIS in term of starting their country and act of terrorism (nagasaki hiroshima). the different is USA have hollywood and control to mainstream media to cover their cruel act while ISIS didn’t have that. I’m really sorry for 100 million native american who killed by racist immigrant who claiming their land

    I live on what used to be native land, and I have a cottage with Ojibwe rock paintings of Nanabush.. I have always felt a respect for the history of this land. If I were to sew my own Ojibwe patterns.. would that be appropriating? I want to preserve a tradition of art and culture.. But I worry that this in itself could be considered offensive..
    Do I avoid appropriation? Or help preserve culture?
    Is an archeologist an appropriator of artifacts, or a preserver of history?

      Sandra Cho I think your comment is the best by far because it's actually engaging and questions the aspects of what could be right or wrong with doing what you're doing rather than just claiming stuff like "snow flakes" or something of the like

    • @chlorisnightshade7319
      @chlorisnightshade7319 Před 6 lety +3

      Appropriation to me is when you take something from another culture and disregard the meanings or origin of your inspiration. I think it would be fine to do this because you have a personal connection and clearly intend to credit your inspiration and avoid disrespect.
      As for the archeologist... it depends on the point of view, but they do not appropriate artifacts- they take them of of context and their home.

    for those thinking why he is complaining about the mechandising of native culture... think on a scenario that your work is something you can make a living with, help communities and create a path to new gens. BUT seeing that your work have a market, someone copy and use your idea to satisfy the demand without giving the proper credit or your community getting nothing from it. the problem is not the merchandising is the lack of recognition or if this work will help the maintance of native culture.

    It's beautiful art and I'm glad they want to carry on their heritage, but I am going to assume none of those people are 100% Native American. Even if they are all pure bred, selling the images on shoes and cell phones is just as bad. I'm sure the original creators of that art were putting them on plastic and rubber a thousand years ago. Any way you want to look at it... it's all for money.

      no, those other merchants didn't create an interest in native american art. that's been a thing for a while now. however, they are exploiting and appropriating it with kitsch or by not recognizing the original artist, which is ethically not cool. real native american artists deserve both recognition and payment for real native american art, which is what he's trying to do.

    • @BronzeOrwin

      Capitaine Cheng what the heck does that have to do with anything. Those companies are exploiting native people and culture. Do you think some hippie chick would really care and be interested of the origins of native artwork. It wouldnt benefit native people if some comapy sells some shitty knockoff of their art. Nah you Uncle Chan it's about quality non quantity. It's the right of native people to have a say of how their culture is portrayed especially considering they are still economically and socially disadvantaged to this day.
