Visiting the highlights of Normandy with my son

A very different vlog this week as I am taking you along a 3 day trip I went on with my 15 year old son. We returned to Normandy to pick up the stuff from my van that I left here last summer and also to visit some of the amazing landmarks of Normandy as well as some historic WWII sites. It was a very emotional trip walking in the footsteps of my American grandfather and learning more about the D-day historic facts which I don't share in this video by the way.
We're taking you to:
- the beaches of Normandy near Deauville
- the charming town of Honfleur and its harbor
- the "falaises" in Etretat
- Omaha beach
- the incredible bay of Mont Saint Michel
- on the Mont Saint Michel
- a little peek of the cathedral of Chartres on our way home

Hi Marloes! Thanks to all who gave of their blood and souls on D Day. I had 13 or 14 uncles who fought the evil of Nazism in WW2 from our small Canadian town in Nova Scotia. Two are resting in Beny sur Mer. I am honouring their grave sites next year. 3 of them helped to liberate Appledorn too! I hope to visit your beautiful place in Burgundy as well. If the offer still stands on cooking together, I will take you up on it.
I felt emotional watching the video on the beach. So glad you spent precious time with your son.

You are really good at filming and editing, congrats to your son. I hope Omaha Beach is as close to a battlefield that he will ever be. So many have a personal or some connection to the Normandy invasion like you and your grandfather, like my uncle who was wounded there, so many... On a brighter note, great tour video thanks.

What a lovely trip for you and your son. Congratulations to your son. It goes so quickly doesn’t it? He will always remember this special time together with his mother. To walk on the beach where his great grandfather walked. Very touching. As an American this was very emotional to me. It is amazing how they built Mont Saint Michel with the tide issues . Especially the scene at the sea has captured me: the fascinating composition of rock and water, the waves bouncing against the beach and then the raindrops on the water. That's where you want to look at (and favourably be) to get calm.

That was wonderful. One of my favourite trips you have done. Such a beautiful part of France. The views of the coastline & Mont Saint Michel was spectacular. I can only imagine the loss of lives on Omaha beach. It must have been terrifying 😢 En Fleur is lovely. It brought back lovely holiday memories. Thank you for taking us along with you. This was a truly lovely trip with you and your son. I hope you will both have fond memories of spending this time together. I always find it so ironic that such beautiful, idyllic places as the beaches of Normandy were also the scenes of such horrific carnage and loss of life. Born after the war, I remember the stories of the horrors experienced by family and friends, the loss of an only son killed on the Italian Front...so thank you for making this. Yes exactly! My sons don’t want to be filmed/ shown on CZcams but I have extra footage from our trip for our personal archives. I know it’s annoying when mom wants to film AGAIN but I have such few pictures of when I was a child that I made myself promise to capture moments with our family as best as I can. I know they’ll appreciate it when they’re older! Also, filming is a way for me to be even more present in the moment and see more beauty. People often tend to say filming is distracting and “you’re more focused on filming than being here and now” but to me the contrary is true! I have a whole new way of looking at things and visiting sites like these since I started creating videos! Really enjoy that!

Thanks for sharing! I was in Chartes just 5 weeks ago, on the way from Germany to the ferry back to Ireland (from Roscoff/Bretagne). Did you see (and hear) the most amazing and touching light show at the façade of the cathedral? I am surprised that Mont St Michel is sooo busy and crowded. It has a corresponding „spartan version“ here on a tiny almost triangular island in the Atlantic in the Southwest of Ireland: Skellig Michael. One of the most touching places on Earth. You can just go by boat (an hour), just less than 200 persons per day are permitted, open just a few months of the year, currently with the awesome puffins breeding there. Unfortunately Star Wars was filmed there, since then it’s almost impossible to get hold of tickets.
Oh I am sorry to hear the film turned the island into a tourist go see place… it sounds like it must have been absolutely magical there before.
We were waiting in front of the cathedral to watch the light show and it was about to begin but my son had a headache and really wanted to go to bed. We’ll go back sometime, it’s not too far of a drive and it’ll be a good excuse to go on another road trip!

Amazing place Normandy would love to go there one day.. I had heard Mont St Michel was a busy tourist spot but it looked really crowded, reminded me of Carcasonne.. well done to your son 🎓
Yes it’s crowded and frankly it even felt less crowded than the other few times I visited years ago! We didn’t get to visit the abbey, the line was really too long…

It’s very impressive. I recently found a documentary on the camera man who filmed during the first group of boats to arrive. Speechless… it really enabled me to see clearly what exactly my grandfather must have experienced. You have no clue really until you see the footage and learn about the defense the Germans put up everywhere. It was really intens to see all this during our visit but also made me realize how incredibly lucky he has been to make it out safe and sound.

Marloes, hello. I became one of those who first likes your video and then watches them. :D I appreciate the fact that you did not include any music in the background, so that we can get the real fee of the atmosphere - especially the sound of the waves. (I actually especially don't like to hear songs in vlogs). Out of all the beautiful places you have visited during this trip, I have been to Honfleur and Etretat, and enjoyed the views and the atmosphere there. Do your sons still ask you why you keep filming? :D It's beautiful to have children who appreciate to travel and learn about the world that way.

une vraie drogue la NORMANDIE ...nous avons hâte d'y retourner ..tellement différente de la côte d'azur ....mon épouse en est dingue ...dommage sue le chemin soit un peu loin ( vers ST EXUPERY , l'aéroport ) sinon nous y serions plus souvent ...mais on ne peut pas tout avoir .
