BMW Z3 - DIY subframe bush removal tool

- The one advisory on my last MOT (amazingly) was the rear subframe bushes. These are chunky beasts on a BMW Z3 and you need a special tool to get them out. Rather than buy one, I chose to make one out of some threaded rod and some offcuts of steel. This is how I did it.
Plus, a brief introduction to a new project: Project Richard... - Auta a dopravní prostředky
Little tip for your puller: A little bit of high pressure grease (something with MoS2, Graphite or Ceramic in it) does wonders when applied to the threaded rod.
Then you waste less energy on the friction in the threads and have more energy for the pulling. Oh... and you'll ruin the threads less quickly 😅
I need to shop for some more lubes! Right now I have bog standard grease, copper and lithium.
@@EVDIY Be careful with the copper paste, that is not compatible with Aluminium. Better use ceramic based Anti Seize for those areas. (BMW has a lot of aluminium parts, so I guess it might be important).
In Germany we say: "Wer gut schmiert, der gut fährt." - "Those who grease well, drive well." 😄
Heat the casing with a good blow lamp until the bush starts to smoke, or bubble at the edges, stick a bolt with a penny washer in the top, tap with a hammer, slides straight out. Don’t actually have to hit it hard, if it’s sticking, just heat it more.
NOT an indoor job!!
You only really need a tool to install it if you don’t have a press, or a really big vice. Needs a ‘tool’ to get the bushes out of the arms though. Cut away the excess rubber, find an appropriate long 1/2” socket, impact sockets are ideal. 12mm threaded rod through the socket, then the bush, penny washer on the end of the bush. Again, heat until it smokes, wind the bush into the socket.
There’s a specific lube to install them, I’ll send you some. Iain
I don't have a press or a big vice! Or a decent torch for that matter. On my Christmas list.
😂
My torch is just the cheapest I could find. The ‘press’ is rectangle made from a steel lintel and a 12 ton(allegedly), eBay bottle jack. Also doubles as a caliper piston remover vie master cylinder added to one side, eventually also a tube bender when I get time to finish it.
@@madzuki1 that sounds like my sort of approach!
