Fire has broken out in the former factory area in Lyubertsy city in Russia’s Moscow Region, local media reported. Covering an area of 3,500 square meters, the fire was caused by a short circuit, according to the report. Ka-32 and Mi-26 helicopters were used to extinguish the fire. No casualties have been reported yet. Agricultural and military equipment, including "Buk", "Pantsyr" and "S-300" missile systems used to be produced at the currently inactive plant.

But in each case, the factory at one time produced industrial or war products for the government. Most viewers look for the flames and smoke but ignore the residual toxic fumes that spread long after the flames are extinguished. This is a legacy of the soviet system where 'quick and dirty' and ignore the toxic byproduct was their way of staying competitive with the capitalist west. Much has been said about Russia's demographic decline, about lower birth rates and fewer ethnic Russians to sustain the culture. Nobody can calculate the effects of environmental poisoning on the collective health of the nation. Industrial accidents do far more than physical harm to bodies. Poisoning from fuel and solvents, unsafe machinery, noise pollution, and being 'under the influence' while working a dangerous job, are all contributing factors in disability retirements and early deaths.
