Migrants face deportation as South Africa curbs special permits

  • South Africa has been a magnet for people seeking better economic opportunities, or even just better healthcare, from across the African continent.
But calls to ensure jobs and business opportunities go to South Africans are getting louder, and the government is looking to revamp its immigration policies.
Thousands of people from Zimbabwe and Lesotho are legally working or studying in the country, but with special permits being terminated, foreigners now have to prove that they have critical skills that South Africa needs.
Al Jazeera's Haru Mutasa reports from Johannesburg, South Africa.

Not necessarily, SA can do what fits SA and their pockets unapologetic , than listening from a distance what is not in the country's interest, where its people are dealing with different, disturbing, undesirable, various problems from the continent and some from the outside world. Anyone saying things and has no clue of, is as good as someone who depends on hear say. Because anyone who thinks he /she has a heart of gold to save the world, go for it, and invite all these folks in your house with pleasure. Or else you have said nothing from the distance.

Don't listen to what they say, their xenophobia excuse. Do what you feel right in your country. That's the fear of SAns, afraid to be seen as unfair. And they fear of being labeled, though they're labeled for being too kind and human as lazy anyway. Just change tune and stop caring and behave like they do. They are cruel thieves with no respect and steal in daylight in front of your eyes and killing and robbery is their hobby because they are not documented and cannot be arrested and trialed. They can't repair the country they dismantled and vandalized properties. But they are not arrested or deported, and are here without apologizing and repairing. So give one reason to love people like that. And where do you get love and tolerance from, for such millions of disrespectful masses. Man they have homelands, I don't even see why they must be discussed here in SA. We should be addressing their problems in their home countries as intervention. These people are deserting their countries and abandoning their homes and families and give us headaches at our borders, facilities and more that's all they do, in fact we don't need them. Their countries need their skills. Still I don't understand that all other countries chasing them back to their homelands. No one is putting blame on those countries like Ghana, Botswana, Zambia and no one screaming anything. But when it comes to SA, everyone needs to be heard that they have said something no matter knowing or not knowing how they're saying something they don't even have clue of. SAns please SAns and put SA first in the line and protect our country from legal or illegal invaders and jackals with all we have. Days of waiting for government to do his job successfully is over. Since all our 3 presidents had no interest to do so, it is now that all SAns take responsibility to protect our children's inheritance, our land. ALUTA CONTINUA ✊

African leaders cursed their own Africa. Anti white sentiment and the anti white drive was kept alive to prop up popular politics and Presidents but few ever brought meaningful development to their nations or fufilled their promises to the people.
They've had a field day enriching themselves, their political comrades, family and friends, but overall they left the majority to their own means, with little adress to their plight.
They blamed poverty on the white institutions and accused Western governments for sabotaging or disengaging them from global wealth, but today, black Africans are better educated and have begun to see who really walked over them.
Black Presidents call for an African approach to Africa...were only made for self gain or in ignorance, as if they knew better than western institutions on the numerous aspects of raising nations. Pride always comes before a fall.
Now that African populations have grown in size, Africa has started to discover that the best chances of progress and developing sustainable economies lie with western systems, technology and administrations, who've been through these problems before...people are the same wherever you go.
To ignore first world experience, including not dealing with corruption, has proved time and again to be the first step along a very rocky road and why Africa and the like, has fallen so far behind.
Surprising as it may seem, wealth and poverty have a lot in common. Wealth being a condition that only materializes decades and decades, even centuaries and in response to correct decision making.
Poverty, is very similar. It also doesn't happen over night. It is characteristically as incremental as wealth, differing mainly in appearance. Owing to consistent wrong decision making, poverty eventuates in a condition of utter depletion, leaving in abundance very little of value

@@samuelt.kisaame7787 Regime change is what it's all about. People will lose their lives...so, who and how many are prepared to die?
Regime change in Africa is indeed the existential crisis facing Africans. Do they sufficient faith to embrace new leaderships and the modern world 'or' do they prefer to remain within the security of the popular African mindset.
If they opt for modernity, Africans will have to reschedule a significant percentage of their current beliefs and methods...attached to the obvious risks of change in leadership. After the change, Africa will go forward fast.
If they opt for popular leadership, Africans will have yo tolerate many more years of suffering before the old guard are obsoleted or slowly die out.
There is still no garantee that any change will be forthcoming, because African leaders are masters of promises but mostly fail to deliver.
Whichever route, young Africa cannot ignore global progress or that they are being left behind. As much as any educated person can't regress or undo the acquisition of knowledge, so also must Africa urgently define, the route and the rate forward, before it loses any more if it's inherited or acquired advantages

Not thousands, millions of Zimbas live in SA, Many without a basic document, passport.
The Helen Suzman Guy is talking from a position of privilege. Ask him if he has ever spoken to the poor , unemployed and vulnerablenSAcans. I doubt if he has ever been to any of the Townships and villages in SA. these Suzman people are simply shocking, there are millions of SAcans who are poor and unemployed who are struggling but they find it perfectly normal for them to fight for Zimbabweans in SA to be prioritised ahead of poor and vulnerable SAcans. Their "sympathy " to Zimbabweans who are far better off than por SAcans who are staying at home while the Zimbabweans are employed is clearly suspect. It is a fact that low skilled Zimbas have literally replaced POOR SAcans. which country can allow that. All African countries including Zimbabwe have prioritizes the jobs Zimbabweans are doing in SA for the Zimbabweans. This fake sympathy of the likes of Helen Suzman must be looked into and must be exposed and checked. These are some of the people who are doing "researches" about migration. It would be interesting to see their population and Samples. Never believe people who depend on funding and therefore sing for their supper. If Helen Suzman was truly sympathetic organisation and cared for the poor they would have started and focussed on the 60%+unemployed SAyouth. So for me, they are being hypocritical. I bet most of their domestic workers are Zimbabweans, in SA which has the highest unemplyment rate in the world. they are fighting for people who have similar low skilled jobs being reserced for them alone.
the question I always ask myself is that who speaks for the poor and vulnerable SAcans, who have to share poor Healthcare, overcrowded schools with illegal immigrants? Whi speaks for the 60%+ unemployed youth,. This hypocrisy must be exposed and be called by its real name!!! Qhaaaa, Gaaa!!!

Zimbabwe is a failed state because of human rights abuses, expropriation without compensation - taking farms from farmers because they are white and establishing subsistence farming on the less productive farms (the real productive ones went to the Mugabes and friends). Subsistence farming only lasts until the first extended draughts and then people starve. Subsistence farmers pay near no tax because they barter and have low tax because of very low income. Now the state is not getting the taxes to build hospitals, schools, roads, etc. The people jump the borders to SA even just for hospital care and mainly for minimum wage jobs. Now SA's taxpayers are paying for Zim's mismanagement, expropriation, corruption, etc. What does SA's EFF do? Tell people to jump SA's borders, drive for expropriation without compensation too, cause racism against white citizens by blaming them for "owning the means of production " (communism). Driving tension into the country. And the ANC drives racial laws to discourage white capabile people from jobs in favor of black people even if usually less capabile. Causing a brain drain ( currently more qualified black people are leaving SA than white ones). Racism against white people is at the root of all the problems. Referring to a person or a group's skin colour should be outlawed as all the institutionalized racism against white people in Zim and SA. The times of "freedom fighting" is over, the time for non-racial fixing and building is here. Or things will only get worse for all, black and white, in Southern Africa.

@@hopes9451 89% of South Africa's population is African amounting to 52 million. Those affected by the migration question in this piece is the 89%. You don't find it ironic, much less intellectually curious that AL-Jazeera couldn't find 1 or 2 people from amongst 52 million to interview them about what affects them? Those 2 White men may be South Africans by citizenship (who are most likely dual citizens of an EU country as well), but they will be the 1st to tell you they are not African. I'd rather not talk to you about Africans in the diaspora. Your comment betrays your lack of insights on that topic. Hence you draw your conclusions from TV cartoon depictions of what life in Europe is for descendants of Africans.

At the end of the day foreign nationals work for whites who are foreigners too from there they are street vendors which is something you will not see a South African citizen doing, truely speaking almost every day i get notifications that government is looking for staff and plenty of private companies looking for citizens only but my South African people do not qualify coz they never liked education and today it's a foreigner's fault. South Africans are obsessed with free stuff they don't want to work hard, on deepest moments of pandemic they were fighting for alcohol instead of progress, perhaps the government failed however it is not to be blamed for individual's bad choices. And i personally hate it when a black person is considered to be a foreigner and a white foreigner is a god 🙄
