    1 i LOVE writing of all sorts and i don’t mind reading if it’s a topic that is interesting to me
    2 this is literally what i do all the time 24/7 about the basics of life, figuring out the deeper meaning of everything, always dishing deeper
    3 i really like looking at stats and data, calculating and creating graphs
    4 it’s kinda hard for me to work if i am given no direction because i like to have something to hold on to while working, either steps or an end goal
    5 learning on my own is a second nature to me, i learn with books, videos and my own practice and experience
    6 i don’t really understand that one but i think i like finding „new“ answers
    7 no, i am very, very inpatient, i like things to work fast…
    8 i don’t mind dirt as long as i can take a good shower afterwards, and i would like to have some physical challenges in my workdays as well

    How does field work affect relationship with friends and maybe if you have a family? Great video btw 💜

    • @FancyScientist
      @FancyScientist  Před 4 lety +6

      It depends on where your field work is located. In graduate school, mine was in Gabon so I had to leave my fiancé for months at a time, which was okay with us. Other students had field work about an hour away from where they lived. For those people, they had long days in the field during field season and it was probably hard for their relationships temporarily. It's much harder when you are a couple and you are trying to find jobs in the same place.

    Hi Stephanie! I graduated with a B.S. in Global Conservation in 2018 and I've finally decided to get a Master's degree. Firstly, I am having trouble deciding if I want to do Aquatic Ecology or Conservation Science; the two concentrations in an M.S. in Environmental Science that my college offers. I love both equally, but I do also think understanding the ocean's health is correlated to the Earth's health (ie climate change and pollution). But I don't want to live in a coastal city. I really, really want to live on a farm in a rural community. I can easily imagine myself as a wildlife biologist, or a marine biologist, but I just can't decide. Do you have any advice for me? I would greatly appreciate any! In the meantime, I'm studying for the GRE. Thank you!

    • @FancyScientist
      @FancyScientist  Před 4 lety +1

      Hi Anna, If you do aquatic ecology you can definitely live inland on a rural farm. Marine refers to the ocean, but aquatic covers lakes, streams, etc. I recommend you look at the job boards and keep track of the jobs that you are interested in and how frequently they appear. Really look at what the responsibilities are of the jobs and think about if you would like doing those things. I created a job tracker to help out with that. You can download it in the blog post attached. Can you get some volunteer experience before you decide? That can also help you see which one you like or don't like. stephanieschuttler.com/best-job-websites-for-wildlife-biology-and-ecology/

    I understand that wildlife biologist can travel a lot? If I were to get a tiny house, would that be ideal for a wildlife biologist since they do (or can) move a lot?
    Thanks!!

    • @FancyScientist
      @FancyScientist  Před 4 lety +5

      I actually made a video on this! It really depends on your job. But I would say yes for your first several years you will definitely move a lot - either between temporary positions or with going to graduate school. czcams.com/video/cJmOgV_3vZo/video.html

    Is there a lot of coding involved in being a wild life biologist? I’m still in high school but I’m no the best with coding.

    • @FancyScientist
      @FancyScientist  Před 3 lety +2

      Hi Cheyenne, if you are looking for jobs at the bachelor's degree level, probably not. But if you get a Master's degree or a PhD, you will very likely have to use the program R, which involves coding. Here's a video I made that describes more about statistics in wildlife biology: czcams.com/video/SBJXd3iNe6k/video.html

    • @FancyScientist
      @FancyScientist  Před 3 lety +2

      There are also free program to help you learn R, like Swirl. Link to Swirl is in this post. Since you are in high school, you have a ton of time to learn: stephanieschuttler.com/best-statistics-books-for-wildlife-biologists-and-probably-other-scientists-too/

    My father made me study several manuals as a child, because he saw that I was afraid of some animals. After reading them now my desire is to abolish zoos

    • @FancyScientist
      @FancyScientist  Před 4 lety +10

      There are definitely bad zoos out there. While I don't love the idea of animals in captivity, zoos do play an important role in conservation. Unfortunately, given the state of the world, we may need these animals in captivity. I actually made a video on this: czcams.com/video/MXAKVZEAu5A/video.html

    is wild life biology the same as a zoologist

    • @FancyScientist
      @FancyScientist  Před 3 lety +4

      I go over this in my book in detail, but in brief wildlife biology studies animals in their natural habitat, while zoology does not (e.g. they can be in labs or captivity). There is a lot of overlap though! stephanieschuttler.com/getting-a-job-in-wildlife-biology-book/

      I don't travel all of the time, but sometimes when I do, I am gone for a long time (6 weeks to 4 months). It totally depends on where you are if you can go. If you are too remote, it may be hard. I have a video all about travel: czcams.com/video/cJmOgV_3vZo/video.html
