    Thank you. This was very helpful. I've had my progressives a few days and like you, have to tilt my head up to see the computer. I'm glad to know that I can fix that with a different alignment. Good info. Thanks!

      You can! I had no clue at first and although many videos explain about how to move your head most don't tell you about the segment height and how you can and should have it adjusted. It took me a couple of years or more of wearing progressives to even realize this and I went to different doctors.

    Thank you for your response, yes I’m going to give it a shot, right now everything is so very uncomfortable, but I can see how I have in just hours adjusted in areas, except looking far, still seems very unnatural having these on, like I’m in a magnifying glass. Thank you, your video is encouraging

      I do understand that. It's an odd feeling because you are seeing differently. But when you get used to it, you end up forgetting! When I take out my contacts my eyes take a few minutes to adjust to glasses again ... I've learned to just be patient. It can be scary and frustrating at first!

    This is the most EXCELLENT explanation that I have EVER heard anyone give regarding wearing Progressive eye glasses. I just got mine today, so I am going to wear them for two weeks and see how I adjust to them. I'm glad you mentioned asking the eye people to re-set the glasses to make me see the way that I want to see, and to not be shy about it. The care that you took to explain every possible scenario was amazing and so very much appreciated. I have subscribed to your channel. God bless you.

    I also just got my first pair today (yes, as you said I googled "How to get used to progressive lenses- ha!) & the fish bowl feeling is VERY noticable. But when I was in my 30's (10 or so years ago? Could it be??) a patient commented that I looked at everything under my glasses like a little old lady. So it's been long overdue and I am already LOVING not having to take them off to read everything. From one woman of a certain age to another: Thank you and gracias for the great tips!

    Hi all. First I like to say that I watched your video prior to picking up my new glasses with progressives. I am 53 and these are my first glasses since I was fortunate enough to enjoy 20/20 vision for over 30 years after LASIK. All this changed after a blow to my eye caused retinal detachment and after surgery I had some astigmatism and 20/30 vision with sudden trouble reading fine print.
    (I was lucky the way it healed.) Back to what I actually wanted to say....awesome video...thanks for that, as it made everything much easier for me when I got the glasses. I am now still in the process of getting used to them (6 days now). I would like to add that I have problems at my desk but when I push them ALL THE WAY up my nose, things are better. Also..when I lay in bed watching TV I can see awesome when I slide the glasses all the way to the tip of my nose as I look that way through the top part when laying down. So what I am trying to say is...slide them also up and down your nose in certain situations to see comfortably. You do get used to having them on different parts of your nose. I just figured that one out and wanted to share this. LOL

      So, I just got my umpteenth pair and am taking them back because I don't want to have to tilt my head back when at the computer. The first thing I noticed was that I am especially loving the distance portion. The TV looks like it's in HD now. This was surprising because I didn't know I had a distance vision problem lol. Hi Lorraine, great video! This is my first day on progressive lenses... I don’t think I have ever moved my head so much in one day! The part I am struggling most with is driving. To get clear vision ahead I need to lower my head down a little to see through the very top part of the lens. Although this is not to much of an issue... it feels unnatural having driven the last 27 years holding my head in a slightly higher position. Is everyone affected this way? I know it’s only day one but wondering if the distance part of the lens should be larger.

    • @LorraineCLadish
      @LorraineCLadish  Před 6 lety +3

      You could definitely have the segment for reading lowered giving you more room for distance! I personally like it to be high. I do find I have to adjust my head tilt when driving, depending on what progressives of the several I own, I happen to be wearing. What I have done is wait it out for a week or so. The brain eventually adapts if you let it. I have to adapt when I switch glasses or wear contacts (or take them out) ... but the time is shorter and shorter. It does take a bit of getting used to though, and you are not alone in this! :-D

    I have been wearing progressive lenses since 2015, and everything you said was spot-on, based on my own experiences. It helps to have a very patient and very understanding optician, who has all the time and energy to answer my questions, and allow me to test out combinations of diopters that are most comfortable for me, aside from getting the diopter from the machine. I initially did not want to spend a lot of money for progressive lenses, and opted for bifocals, but that lasted only for one morning, because I almost fell down the stairs, as I stepped the wrong way because of the vision jump, even when I was looking at the stapes straight down. I ran back to the optical shop right away (well, I did not run, haha, I took an Uber, and very carefully navigated my steps in and out of the car) and ordered progressives. I have been happy with them ever since, and I have now just ordered my third pair of progressive lenses, this time with the Transitions Xtractive. Thanks so much for this video! I am now going to subscribe to your channel.

    I'm a licensed optician. All progressives have far, intermediate and near vision. You should not have to bend your head to see, if properly measured. That's the biggest problem getting used to progressive lenses...the PD (pupillary distance) and seg hight must be dead on accurate. Never wear a progressive that gives you a fish bowl effect...that is a dead ringer that measurements are not correct. It is normal to have a bit of nausea or even mild headaches for a day or two. BUT if things are not getting much better within 3 days, please go back to where ever you had your glasses made, they may need to do more frame adjustment, redo your measurements and remake your lenses...or have you see the prescribing doctor for an RX check.

Or wait

    Definitely move your head especially when walking on uneven ground or on stairs. I have almost fallen a few times since getting trifocals due to that fishbowl affect. I even considered stop using them. I have finally adjusted but it took weeks for me. I went from readers only to trifocals. Now it's better but it does take time & learning how to move your head. Lots of useful information here. When the presbyopia started in my 40s I tried bifocals first, but couldn't get used to them. They were especially disorienting when going down stairs. I switched to progressives and when I first put them on I knew they were going to work for me. I can meet all of my vision needs with photochromatic progressives with the exception of driving. It's worth it to get progressive sunglasses just for driving.

Sounds like I need to have the middles moved up a bit as you suggested. It would also be good to have a larger reading area as I feel like those are the areas where I have the worst vision (I can drive without glasses, though do better with them). It’s interesting to note that despite having spent time getting used to them, you now still feel happy to use separate pairs for both reading and for your computer. I would like to know how long you recommend new users to avoid using separate single vision glasses as they get used to their new progressives. Thanks

I took on board what you said about being accepting of the limitations of your vision in middle age. I am still kind of getting used to wearing them in some ways, but it’s very liberating to be able to accomplish more or less everything with just the one pair of glasses! Like you, I have a separate pair of readers for bed, and for long sessions on a computer I feel a little happier with a bespoke computer pair. But the varifocals are here to stay!

    Your video 100% explains the issue I have with my progressive lenses. Having recently had an eye test I was recommended progressive lenses. The first frame I chose didn't fit correctly and although I had high end lenses (various x) the frames wouldn't stay in place and kept slipping to the end of my nose even after several adjustments so the opticians changed the frames. The issue I have now is the same as you have with the frames you love where the mid range is too low. I can see great in the distance and up close to read but mid range is blurry. To see straight ahead at arms length I have to tilt my head back or lift my glasses slightly. I have been back so many times to the opticians they seem irritated with me and I don't really want to go back. The trouble is my glasses with lenses cost me a lot of money.
    My progressives are great for driving couldn't be better. But when shopping I can see all over the store and up the aisles. I have to step back to see clearly on the shelves then if I go to pick something up it goes blurry until I either lift my head right up or lower the item until it comes clear.
    So after watching your video it's clear to me that the mid range has been set slightly too low. I'll just have to decide weather to do what you do and get another pair but request the mid range to be slightly higher or go back yet again and see if they'll change the lenses :-(
    Can I ask what kind of lenses do you have/recommend?

    • @LorraineCLadish
      @LorraineCLadish  Před 4 lety +1

      I have digital progressive lenses in my latest pair and can't be happier. It does suck when the mid range is too low or too narrow. I would definitely go back and ask whether it can be changed. I had NO idea about any of this until I went through quite a few pairs!

    Wonderful video, very helpful. I wish the eyeglass retailers would explain some of this, or ANY of this! But they just take my money and walk me out the door.
    I am having some real trouble acclimating to my progressives - the main problem is that in the mid-distance, the vertical position for focusing on a given distance is different for each eye. So when something is in focus of my right eye, I have tilt my head down to see it in focus in the left eye, but then it's out of focus in the right eye.
    How do I get the eyeglass store to fix this? I've called, but they just keep saying "keep giving it more time, you'll get used to it". But it's been several weeks.

      @Deploracle Před 4 lety

      Sounds like one lens may be higher on your head than the other. Try adjusting the ear pieces/nose pieces to get the distance from the top of each lens to the pupil the same for each eye. Some intermediate areas of progressives are quite narrow. Unless the lens are level on your face, each eye will be looking through different focal lengths.

      Your distance prescription will be in the ENTIRE lens, with the reading ADD/PLUS power layered on the lower part of the lens.
      1) make sure your glasses are level/horizontal
      2) make sure your eyes are also on the same horizontal meridian as each other. (some people have one eye much higher or lower than the other).
      3) find the two little circles or squares on each lens, and dot with a sharpie. (progressive lenses WILL have these markings- they are necessary to
      mount and edge the lens properly for your frame. In-between these two dots, which are 34 mm. apart, make a dot at center. 4mm UP from that center dot,
      make another dot, and that's where your pupil(s) should locate.
      4) if the dots are NOT directly over your pupils, then the lenses were not cut at the same 'segment height' from the lowest-inside-bottom of the eyewire.
      5) if the dots ARE directly over your pupils, but you have to tilt up/down several mm's differently for the same focal sweet spot,
      then it's VERY LIKELY you need an RX re-check to adjust your distance power. (Your intermediate and reading powers lower down, are a combination
      of your distance power, with the add/plus power layered on top of it). You can also check this by covering/occluding one eye, then the other, while
      gazing through the DISTANCE portion in the upper part. You may notice a difference in the distance focal power/magnification between the two eyes.
      THE DISTANCE Rx IN THE ENTIRE LENS MUST BE VERY CORRECT TO BEGIN WITH, or the three focal lengths/powers in each lens can not match each other.
      Mark the lenses as instructed and see if aligned with pupils. If they are, go back for a recheck and distance prescription change. Yep, I'm an optician :-)

I will also be picking up my glasses that day so lots of things to get used to. I’m amazed at people who don’t need any vision correction at all! Just started wearing them tonight after I picked them up, but it still seems like everything is off. I know I need to give it some time, especially because it's my first time wearing them after being corrected, but it seems like my 'sweet spot' is either very small on the lens OR there isn't a perfect spot for certain distances. They're frustrating and I'm afraid I'll never get used to these. I keep taking them off because I actually feel better with my bad vision than wearing these. Hi Lorraine, (that was my grandmother’s name; she passed away 12 years ago) those glasses look nice on you. I like the style of the large oval plastic frame. You have beautiful long curly brown hair and bangs. I got another eye exam last week and I now need near vision power in addition to distance. My left eye is -1.75, and right eye now +.25, formerly -1.00 for distance. My near vision is worse in my right eye. I got progressive bifocals. I get them next week. I also got plastic frames this time, sort of grayish, I usually wore metal ones with nosepads before. I chose frames that would be large enough to accommodate the bifocal. I’m 44. Why would my right eye go from nearsighted to farsighted? I’m getting near add in both eyes. Am I getting presbyopia? I can read my phone with my left eye a few inches from my face without glasses but at the same distance it’s blurry with my right eye. But put minus power in front of my left eye and near vision will be blurry so I need an add for that eye, too. It’s the beginning stages of presbyopia I think. I wonder if 5-10 years down the road I will need stronger power for near?

      You probably will. I used to have 20/20 and it's hard for me to have to wear glasses for everything. My vision started changing at 43 and then I got hit hard at 46. My husband has always worn glasses and my vision is now worse than his! His vision is also changing. At one point my prescription was changing every YEAR, and I spent a ton on a new pair of glasses every month of September. Then it leveled out and recently I noticed that a bunch of my older glasses are no longer of any use to me because my mid-range prescription is different again. Thank you for the compliments and thank you for telling me about your grandmother!

    I’m on day five of my varifocals (as they’re called in the UK) and I’m already finding the blurry side panels are affecting me less and less. I bought mine with a deeper intermediate and reading field as I too use a laptop/screen but more importantly I read music too. That has to be at a distance that’s arms length but can come up to my mid field of vision.
    Unfortunately for me I chose the wrong time of year as I’ve finished teaching for the summer and my orchestra work resumes at the start of season in September (no tours for me this summer unfortunately). I’m worried that with my violin teaching I really will need my peripheral vision and will then have to move my whole body more. I can’t just move my head around lots when its supporting my violin! I suppose I’ll just have to be more mobile and move my lazy butt. Heigh ho, fun and games of getting older!

I did have a pair given to me by a brand and they look super cute, but even after sending them back to be adjusted, I can't use them for everything, only to drive and maybe look at my phone a bit, but they're missing the midrange. I can see so well with my latest ones that I had adjusted in person, that I'm a bit spoiled now. • @LorraineCLadish
      @LorraineCLadish  Před 6 lety

      I completely understand. I went through the same thing. I measured mine looking at myself in a mirror and using a wax crayon to mark my pupils in the glasses and then measured the distance in mm which is what is used. Mine to give you an idea is 60 mm. What this does not help completely is with the segment height. That is usually best measured with the frame you are going to be wearing. I have one pair of glasses that I did not feature in the video (I got them later online) and they are not as seamless as the others I had done showing up in person at a store. However, I´ve also noticed the in-store prices can be brought down depending on where you live. In the U.S. we can get AARP discount and sometimes a discount based on what health insurance we have even if we don´t have an eyesight plan. I once bought a frame online thinking I was saving money, and spent $120 for the frame, but then the lenses cost around $450 ... At the same place, when I got a new pair, and bought the frames at the store, they threw them in for free so it was actually cheaper! The best thing is to go to different opticians and see ... the prices can vary wildly. I hope this helps!

      I would definitely go to the shop where your glasses were made and let them know. It takes a bit to get used to them, but sometimes there issue is with the lenses. I have one particular pair that I can wear to drive and maybe check my phone but that's it. And it's the way the lenses are made. They were a gift so I keep them just for that. If the lenses are made properly you should not have an issue as long as you're moving your head and eyes the right way (that does take some getting used to). Let me know how it goes!

    Hi Lorraine! thanks for your excellent video - so useful. And you've helped me to understand some of the madness I am feeling in my first 24 hours of having progressives. I do have one question though... the best advice is to KEEP THEM ON ALL DAY to get used to them... BUT, as my day is spent working at a computer, this is proving really tricky, as the corners of my screen are really blurred unless I move my head constantly.
    I could just use single vision for screen viewing, but this will stop me getting used to my progressives.... What do you recommend?
    Thanks so much

    • @LorraineCLadish
      @LorraineCLadish  Před 5 lety +1

      So, I'm using my progressives right now as I type on my computer. The moving of the head constantly turns into an instinctual movement you won't notice over time. I bit the bullet and used them for everything, and I also spend hours at the computer. That said, once you're used to them, you can use single-vision glasses only for computer use if it's more comfortable. When you switch to your progressives it will take you a couple of minutes to adapt again. It takes me a tiny bit to adapt to whatever pair of glasses I put on, and then I'm fine and forget. Hope it helps!

    I had mine more then a week now. I am trying my best to put them on most of the day to get used to them . I felt they are not done right, went back to my optician 2 days ago but he said it will only take time and that they are fine.
    Well yesterday i felt so dizzy and felt like i am going to faint. Is it normal to feel that dizzy. Headaches I heard is normal but feeling like the world is spinning scared me. The sensations stayed with me even after i took them off. And I am literally scared to put them back on
    What do you think i should do?
    I think my optician will not be as helpful :(

    • @LorraineCLadish
      @LorraineCLadish  Před 4 lety

      So, I would give it a rest until you stop being dizzy. I feel the dizziness (spinning) is unrelated to the glasses. It sounds more like vertigo (and please know I am not a doctor, just a person who has vertigo once in a while). It also sounds like anxiety, which I can also relate to. I would take them off for a few days and give them another try for a few days. If the issue persists, I would check with a physician to figure out whether it is vertigo and then go back to the optician and request a different segment height. Now there is also a different option. Here is a good article with lots of information: opticianworks.com/the-consumers-guide-10-11-15/ Hope it helps!

    Thank you for the tips, just when I needed them! As others are saying they found you the day they got their first pair of progressives (trifocals) to find advice on how to cope better. I also just received mine today. I have worn readers for for everything except far vision, including computer work, for several years. The need for higher strength progressed so my latest was 2.50. I was constantly taking off and putting on my glasses. My 2 1/2 year old granddaughter finds them around the house (I have many of them) and brings them to me because she knows how much I need them. She even has her own pair with the lenses taken out that she carries around by putting the earpiece in her teeth (like her grandma :-). With my optometry visit I found out my left eye and right eye are very different - the left much worse - and also that my far vision has worsened. So the time has come to be done with the readers.
    So far it is going better than I expected. I have a little of that nauseous feeling that comes along with a wooziness. But my far vision is nice and clear and easy to see "out there". Reading isn't too bad though it seems somewhat narrow and I keep losing the focus but find it again by moving my head, or whatever I'm reading. My mid range vision is more of a challenge, seeming even narrower. Even now as I write the words blur off and on, but I am coping and without the glasses, I would be able to see nothing but blur. Your video helped me feel more confident that it will become more comfortable and eventually normal for me.
    I'm so glad you made the strong suggestion to wear them all the time after getting them. I read somewhere else a recommendation to start with an hour a day then increase each day. From my own experience in adjusting to other things in life it seems this would just draw the adjustment period much longer.
    Thanks again!

    • @LorraineCLadish
      @LorraineCLadish  Před 5 lety

      Hi! So I do have a suggestion for you! If your midrange gets blurry easily you can ask for a larger midrange segment. I had no idea about any of this until a few years into wearing progressives. I thought you got what the doctor gave you and that was that. Not so. We are all different and no two progressives are the same. All of my glasses are slightly different but I’ve learned over time what I prefer. So I ask for a higher midrange and reading segment and then I tilt my head forward when driving to see over it. I personally prefer that to having to lift my head to see the person I’m speaking with. So try them nonstop and if the midrange is still easily blurry then ask for it to be modified. Hope this helps!!!!!

      Thank you! Great suggestion and important for others to be aware of too. I did get the more expensive wider mid range - digital I think they called it. Now that this much time has passed I am feeling much more comfortable. Did not take them off at all except for bed, shower and swimming. Rarely a bother now. It seems out eyes and reactions to the lenses find ways to adapt naturally.
