Fascinating, insightful stuff on O'Neill and his plays and on the roles that these two outstanding actors had inhabited... wish the interview had been longer...
O'Neill's mother kicked morphine COLD TURKEY in a NYC convent two years after when this play takes place. She traveled and lived her son Jamie who also kicked his drinking. When his mother died, Jamie fell into total alcoholism (Moon for the Misbegootten).
Fun fact - Nathan Lane keeps a pair of Eugene O'Neil's monogrammed boxer shorts framed inside his home.
I can't see Nathan Lane as Hickey. I guess that's the definition of casting against type.
I'm right there with you on that one. Maybe he pulled it of
@@MetFansince I can't see him as Hickey either. The 2 great ones I saw were Jason Robards and Kevin Spacey. Both of them were very close, maybe Spacey had an edge on the boisterous side of Hickey and Robards on the more serious side. We have a lot of great versions of the play on software but not Spacey's. I would pay big bucks for any type of copy of it. I don't understand, I have 2 versions of Jason's but nothing of Kevin's (except for a 10 minute segment on YT) and Spacey's was over 22 years ago.
