  • The first time I heard a diatonic Native flute was in 2003 after receiving Mary Youngblood's album Heart Of The World. I fell in love with the tender melodies that floated from these flutes and shortly thereafter I knew I had to have one.
    Today, I have several diatonic Native flutes in my collection and now we're offering them to flute players who are looking to add one to their collection as well. Rick Svitzer of Rain Spirit Flutes is a dear friend and exceptional flute maker. We're delighted to partner with him in offering these beautiful Butternut flutes in the key of A and G. Check them out here: www.jonnylipfordmusic.com/pro...
    We've also been adding lots of content to the Horizons Plus membership surrounding diatonic and world flutes, and of course the modern Native American flute. Learn about our upcoming workshops, flute circles, Q&A sessions, lesson modules, courses and more--all included in the membership! www.horizonsfluteschool.com/b...

    Thank you Jonny for this timely video as I was recently wondering about diatonic flutes, the fingering pattern and possible advantages. Very helpful, thanks again. I happen to have two flutes from Rick Svitzer, both are 7 hole standard pentatonic minor flutes (F# and G) with thumb holes that gets 4 notes above the octave note clearly in tune without half holing. They are my favorite go to flutes when I am playing a song with many notes in the upper register. Rick is a master flute maker and it is sad to hear he is retiring from flute making. His skill at flute making will be greatly missed in the flute community. I wish him well.

      I hear you, Frank. Always a sad day when a great flute maker goes out of commission. I have some of these flutes in stock, so perhaps this is a chance to get onto that diatonic thing! www.jonnylipfordmusic.com/collections/native-american-style-flutes/products/rain-spirit-diatonic.

      @@JonnyLipford, tell me, is the fingering pattern for the notes the same on the diatonic flute as it is on the standard pentatonic flute?

    Hi Jonny, I've been playing the diatonic scale on my pentitonic flutes for a long time now. I've converted so many Celtic tunes to N.A.F. tabs I can do the conversion in my head. The Zuni Sunset Song can easily be played on a tin whistle, also Joseph Fire Crow's song, Ne-me'hotatse on his Red Beads album is in the diatonic scale. These flutes would be very helpful indeed. Thanks for the review.
    Until next time

    Hi J, do you think that the ‘ limited’ range of the native flute was due to its origins of as an ‘ outdoors’ instrument?this was never meant to be a ‘ western’ 🪈

    • @JonnyLipford
      @JonnyLipford  Před 8 měsíci

      The limited range of this instrument is definitely due to its design, originating in the North American Indigenous cultures. It has since been modernized in tuning while still trying to stay close to its roots.

    How is that a native flute? The modern 6 hole version was a big enough insult to us, just buy a recorder

      @crystalr7685 Před rokem

      I don’t think anything was put out there to insult anyone.
      However, I feel similar perhaps a better label for this type of flute would be a World Flute or Irish Flute?
      If this flute was in a low D I would be interested in it.

      @@crystalr7685 Well, The insult all started around the 80"s, with the minor pentatonic scale being designated to our flutes, then someone decided to add an extra hole/note that's not in that scale, (you know, the hole you always keep covered) Guess the extra hole makes it not tuned and there for somehow makes it native, I guess we're idiots and would add bad notes on purpose, But, It's all good, if it's not grandfather tuned, it's really not a native american flute. And that is why they use the term "Native American Style Flute" and for other legal reasons can't sell it as a "true native american flute" Sorry for the rant.

      Actually, the majority of Indigenous flutes were closely tuned to a major scale. Look up the work that the late Kevin Locke was pursuing before his passing. Native American flutes are mostly represented as 5 or 6 hole minor pentatonic flutes.
      What I am presenting here is a major diatonic tuned flute made in the style (two-duct design) of the Native flute. I don't post content like this to insult anyone, in fact, quite the opposite... To bring awareness to this instrument.
