  • Traditionally, positions on the field have been referred to by a standard naming convention like Forward, Midfielder, Defender, etc. Recently, the Numbering System is used more frequently. This video explains the rationale behind the numbers and provides player examples for each position.

    Thanks! I recently made the top team for my age group, the coach and other players would be using these kinds of numbers to describe positions on the field and I would be very confused on what they are talking about. So thanks for helping me understand what my coach and teammates are talking about :)

    Number ten has always been a very versatile role: Pelé, Maradona, Platini, Zidane. Playmakers who could score tons of goals as well as leading a counter attack from their own box.

    Dude i have a doubt in double pivot of a 4 2 3 1 formation you have two holding midfielders one on the left half space and the other on right half space. And in the double pivot if the left sided midfielder is a box to box number 8 and the right sided midfielder is the number 6 defensive midfielder, then when your team is playing through the left side you have your box to box midfielder to take part in the attack and progress the ball
    but when your team is playing through the right side your team doesn't have a box to box midfielder on the right side instead you only have a number 6. So when your team is playing via right side the defensive midfielder doesnt move that high on the pitch and stays deep. So how can we progress the ball through the right side without a box to box player on the right. Pls reply

      @Soccerspective  Před 3 lety +14

      Hi,
      Thanks for your comment and I hope you have liked the video and subscribed to our channel.
      The way the 4-2-3-1 works, your #8 and #6 players are responsible for the entire central area of the pitch, not just the right or left. So, if the ball is on the right flank, both your players would take up positions according to the ball position - which could mean that both are on the right side of the field temporarily.
      Formations are just static representations of a system of play. They don't dictate how players play during ball movement and transitions.
      Hope this helps!

  • @elizabethcsicsery-ronay1633

    Excellent explanation. First time I understood the numbers and what they do. Yes indeed, Messi is a no. 10. The best players are no, 10, so of course, that's what he was. He was also used as a false 9. Now he's no. 30 in PSG. What's that? Pls cut out the music, it interferes with the excellent commentary.

    Funny to associate it as fixed roles but I always considered as below. It helps to associate strategies and player styles but not mandatory to be in real life game.
    1 GK
    2 DR / MR
    3-4 = CB
    5 Defensive mid central, can be the cb according to team formation
    6 DL / ML
    8 mid central; helps both in defense and attacking, the one called box-to-box.
    7 winger position, no matter the left or right side. The one that will run to cross the balls. In a 4-4-2 formation he'll be the MR or ML
    9 the attack whatever style is.
    10 Usually the most offensive midfielder, playmaker, dribbling, the maestro.
    11 can be winger, or second striker based on the team formation.

    • @epsilon-less-than-0
      @epsilon-less-than-0 Před 4 měsíci

      Back in the days, we used to associate numbers with the position not with roles:
      For example, Pirlo is number 6, Messi is number 7, Zidane is number 10, Modric is number 8 and Ronaldinho is number 11.
      But guess what? All of these players have a rôle of a playmaker.
      Pirlo is deep lying playmaker or regista.
      Xavi is a playmaker (in his debut, he was number 6 a regista like pirlo).
      Zidane is an advanced playmaker.
      Messi and Ronaldinho are wide playmakers.
      With that being said :
      6 can contain various roles according to the tactics in place, like defensive midfielder or ball winning midfielder or deep lying playmaker
      8 also can contain a Box to Box midfielder or a protector midfielder or playmaker
      10 can be an advanced playmaker/trequartista like Zidane and Ozil or a support striker/Raumdeuter (nowadays called 9.5 sometimes) like Benzema and Henry or an advanded playmaker/Mezzala like De Bruyne and Kaka.
      11 contain wide playmaker or attacking wingers or wide midfielders

Linguistically creative students at the University of Oxford in the 1880s distinguished between the sports of “rugger” (rugby football) and “assoccer” (association football). The latter term was further shortened to “soccer” (sometimes spelled “socker”), and the name quickly spread beyond the campus. However, “soccer” never became much more than a nickname in Great Britain. By the 20th century, rugby football was more commonly called rugby, while association football had earned the right to be known as just plain football.

    That's awesome!! Something that I 've noticed the #6 of Brazil are always left backs,the #5 are always defending midfielders and #3 and #4 centre backs. Could you explain me that??

      @hatemawa Před 2 lety +2

      Different countries apply different numbers. Most of south American countries replace number 6 with number 5. In Argentina central defenders are 2&6 (Ayala/Samuel). Left back is 3 and right back is 4.
      In England, central backs are 5&6 while central midfielders are 4&8
      In Netherlands the defence line is numbered from right to left. RB is 2
      CBs are 3&4, LB is 5. In Sweden the entire formation is like that. You have 6&7 DMs, 8&9 AMs, 10&11 CFs.

    Any examples of current Sweepers? I know they're rare but there's gotta be a few out there right?

    • @Soccerspective

      After the role of the Sweeper was pioneered by Franz Beckenbauer and Gaetano Scirea, the most recent examples that come to mind are Lucio at Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich. Another example is Traianos Dellas with the Greece National team. Unfortunately, the new norm is the Sweeper Keeper. With goalkeepers like Manuel Neuer playing as the sweeper, this position has almost become non-existent.

    Ronaldo used to play as a number 11 and cut inside while taking on defenders until he was older recently we see him as a 9 striker. Because now the speed has slightly decreased
