A good honest talk about what we are doing in training. I did used to think I was training Aikido for self-defense and to become a badass martial artist. But realised I really couldn't do anything in a real-life situation. I was bummed about it for like a year.
At my club we weren't training specifically for those situations so what could expect? So now I train and continue with Aikido to become better on the mat and enjoy the aspect of body mechanics .

I think as long as you are clear about WHY you are training and do your best to honestly follow that path you cann't really go wrong. I do get irritated by Aikido dojos that dnt even have a punch bag or gloves and profess to be a martial art - it's misrepresentation and doesnt help anyone. With all the information so freely available nowadays though, anyone that wants to expand their personal budo to be able to be 'practical" under pressure can do so - and that was one of the reasons we started the channel, to try to encourage cross-training and the sharing of ideas. Great comment Ray, thank you.

Fantastic discussion would love to hear more among these lines. Very common sense too. I have somewhat of a boxing background and I regularly spar full contact of course with headgear but at a low level. I'm not a tough guy by any means. And I understand how boxing works and I understand why it's practical as a martial art. I understand that but for some reason for years I have been drawn to Aikido even with all of the detractors and the people shaming it.
I think I would like to try it soon.

not all his students were accomplished martial artists. surely the 1st ones.
But when it became a big business, with no letters of recommendations, it became public. Most of the people didn t know anything about martial arts.
These last students were the one who made famous and widespread the art.

so often this is lost, not only to others outside the art but to practitioners too that dont understand what kata teaches, nor do they ever test those ideas out, past cooperative kata. that approach is killing many traditional arts including Aikido

Click bait!!..You have an image of what appears to be a demonstration, but in reality you uploaded an 8 minute monologue.. Pretty much sums up Aikido..

?? how is this click bait? 1. it's an image FROM THE VIDEO 2. he's talking about how you can't fight using Aikido unless you understand the lessons learned from the basics first. Go watch their "self defence Aikido" shorts playlist, that might be easier for myou to digest. Both the senior guys in this organisation have a fighting background.

Nah, it's discussing a topic, nothing wrong with it, besides there's plenty of demo and sparring videos on the channel and youtube in general with aikido and aikijitsu concepts so

?? it's a class, he's teaching at a seminar. What do you expoect him to do, convey information via interpretive dance or something? If you want to see him fight go to the dojo.
