Why do Privacy Screen Protectors SUCK?

  • I’ll be honest with you, I don’t like privacy screen protectors. They hurt my eyes. Which is why I haven’t done a privacy screen protector review since July 2015.
Again, this channel isn’t sponsored, so if a product class sucks, I won’t do reviews for them.
So I’ve spent the last 8 months trying to figure out why I don’t like privacy screen protectors. And I’ve cased it.
See what I think are the best "normal" screen protectors: • Top 5 TOUGHEST Glass S...
My disdain for privacy screen protectors comes from the fact that your eyes aren’t seeing the same thing because of the space between your eyes.
At MREH, Monty and I base all our reviews on actual usage. Now this video would usually get wrapped up into the actual roundup video BUT because of COVID-19 it gets its own primetime video. Again, I don’t like privacy screen protectors BUT in order to figure out which one is best, I need to figure out why I dislike them.
For my privacy screen protector tests, I’ve actually come up with another contraption to help me measure the angles of the filter consistently between products. I’ve called here Edith.
With privacy screen protectors, it’s basically a static venetian blind for your screen. Looking at the device straight on minimizes the appearance of the slats but looking at an angle obscures your view.
BUT here’s the catch, if I look at a privacy screen protector at an angle, my right eye sees a different image than the left. Here’s an actual example.
I’ve got two iPhone about 18 inches apart and one iPhone with a privacy screen protector a couple of feet away. As I turn the privacy screen protector you’ll notice the screen blanks out at different angles.
Here’s an iPad with an iPhone privacy screen protector on it. Again, notice how the images are different as I rotate the iPad?
Those consistently changing images are almost like a flicker any time you’re not looking at the device straight on. And this happens basically anytime you’re looking at your phone NOT on a flat surface.
Now the amount of flickering depends on the viewing angle of the filter on the privacy screen protector. Some only have a 45 degree angle, others have a 28 degree angle.
That took me 8 months to figure out while using using these screen protectors across all my devices. BUT now that I know about it, my privacy screen protectors are going to be that much better which is exciting.
So that’s all I got for this video. I got for this video.

Well, the biggest drawback I faced whil using these privacy screen protectors is; you realize your battery starts getting drained a lot quicker. Why? Because you’re always on full brightness as low brightness makes it harder to see. So full brightness is 30-40% lower on a privacy screen protector.

In defense of privacy screen protectors…
Firstly, the demonstration was greatly exaggerated. Anyone who has eyes 11 inches apart probably has more pressing issues. The upper end is around 3 inches. Secondly, if you still have issues with the different pictures thing, hold your phone further from your face. This reduces the actual angular distance from eye to eye.
Other than that, a solid video from a quality channel.

The privacy screen protectors have a black colour filter to them. When applied to the phone, you immediately notice the difference in you screen colour. Didn't took even 2 min to conclude that I hate them on my iPhone 12. The worse is at night time when your phone turns on the yellow tint, and the colour of your screen goes from bad to worse!

I just removed the privacy screen protector from my wife's iPhone 12. I should have removed it months ago. The privacy protector dulled all the colors and dulled the screen brightness. We had to crank the brightness which sucked away battery power - and even then, the screen still wasn't vibrant.
We paid big bucks for the iPhone 12's impressive screen then killed all the benefits by sticking the privacy protector over it. We'll just get a normal glass protector in future - or even just leave it as is.

I'm having 1 installed to cover scratches & a small minor chip in my screen. I'm OCD & cannot stand dust on my Note 10+ screen while watching movies. So instead of paying $200+ dollars for a new outer screen, the phone shop recommended me buying a privacy screen protector & having them install it for $5

I’ve had my I got from the mall for about 4 months now, not sure what brand but at first it was okay but now it’s fading it’s also coming off. Makes my screen look like crap, also it would mess up the touchscreen I’d have to hit it with a hammer to get the letter I wanted. I’m about to fully take it off

No one does tech reviews like you sir. In a sea of copycat personalities and bland surface-level content, you perform in-depth tests and showcase exactly what the experience of using every ounce of a product is like. Will now defer to your judgement for all my tech purchase decisions (as I just did when I ordered the Mous Clarity for my new Galaxy S20. As a side note, I use Honey and it found me a coupon for $15 off, but I deleted it and used yours because I wanted to support the man who supported me with your vigorous and thorough tests. I hope others will follow suit!). Thank you so much for working so hard and producing the content you do. And please don't change your style - it will be noticed far more and will pay off. Subscribed for life - keep up the great work!

@@artur6112 ...don't know why this is a highlighted reply to a very thoughtful comment that I had hoped would be motivating and kind to read for Aaron. Clearly I was on a tear of watching his videos, and simply left this comment on a video different from the one I got the coupon from. I wasn't lying about using it; the coupon was from a video he did on the Mous Clarity, which I bought after watching his review. Calling me out as if I didn't use one at all kind of misses the entire point of the comment I left. I support Aaron and his style and was simply trying to encourage others to do so as well.

Man is the Jettech as bad as it looks on the video? Cuz that is absolutely unusable. The rest look great. I’m surprised cuz I’m SUPER happy with my Jettech screen protector (I’ve always used the regular one though) just ordered a new 3 pack since my mom got an SE and she’s super clumsy and the one on my phone is already 6 years old so it has a few minor hairline cracks (can only see them under specific angles in specific lighting conditions) and some more minor cracks in a corner. It’s insane how well it’s held up to drops over the years, even ones where it lands perfectly flat on the screen, and that’s been with a VERY slim cover. Just got a new one since the old one literally crumbled away and this one actually makes the screen recessed while still being low profile, not bulky and easy to pocket. After I swap the screen protector, there’s no way that thing will ever crack. Was considering privacy glass but I don’t wanna use another brand and that just looks way too dark. This clear one is absolutely perfect.
