A lot of it just rotted and fell off and call me crazy but i had no idea that there was a male and female flower. Your video was very informative and helped me tremendously!

My maternal family were all farmers/ranchers who grew their own food. We made rounds at harvest. Us kids prepared corn, peas, beans, okra, etc for the ladies in the kitchen...our reward, fresh hand-cranked ice cream. The elders are all gone now...it's my turn. And I've never been on this end of food production before. I'm a new subscriber reporting for school, sir!
@@ScottHead Scott, when you plant your squash, zucchini, & cucumber….mix a little bug dust into the hole that you plant each plant in. That’ll take care of the vine bore problem. We call them root maggot in my neck of the woods.

They're bad in my area, too ... the entire growing season. I'd like to try an experiment using peppermint and/or rosemary oils as scent maskers. Couldn't hurt, might help.

Great video! I'm in the Houston area as well and planted my first zucchini. I've been battling vine borers too. Scotch tape is my favorite way of removing eggs so far. We've also tried a BT spray, we'll see how it goes. Do vine borers attack butternut squash and pumpkins too? Thanks for sharing!
I got the seeds from a small pot. I have a bad background, but hopefully I can make my squash grow. Going to start growing this summer and going to be a lot of mistakes on the way
My squash this year is already bigger than any plants ive had in the past. I mixed wood ash into my soil before i planted. It seems to have done the trick.
I have grown squash plants in seven gallon fabric pots the last three years....huge plants, dozens of male flowers, not one single female. No idea why. They are from varied seed sources and different varieties.
Wellll shoot! I didn’t know how big they got lol I have smaller raised beds that I’m not sure will fit all that 😂 I have 4 of them in the beginning phase of growth
Thanks for the explanations and for showing the vine borer. I wonder if I've seen them and didn't know what they were. I've wiped something away, but it's so microscopic that I didn't know what it was.
Just a thought on plants with disease or pests like the one in your video. Maybe instead of throwing it away, you could burn it then use the ash in your compost.
Seed starting mix is safer b/c it doesn't have bacteria which can latch on st seed stems which can damage and rot your seedlings. Most have been sterilized to a point. Huge pumpkins come from constant soaking. Vine powers can be discouraged by using a sugar sprinkler loaded with diatomaceous earth powder DAILY from you local pool supply.

Crones Cradle Conservative in Citra, FL was growing zucchini under row covers in raised beds during the winter when I was there once. I don't know if it was an experiment or how it worked out.
Its a recycled piece of plastic or or composite sheet that used to be the wall of my dad's above ground swimming pool. I salvaged about a dozen of these 4x4' panels when he moved and had to take down the pool. They have been great around the house for various tasks. One is the door to my active compost pile.

Well this batch is getting shared with my church family tomorrow. I think you can dehydrate. I made a nice succotash the other day. I don't preserve squash as it gets eaten too quickly. :-)

BT (Thuricide) can be used but you have to re-apply frequently and some folks inject it into the stalks with a hypodermic needle. I don't have time for that, just get my harvests and be done. :-)

Man, when I was 6 I took a pumpkin and stuck it in the ground and it grew just fine you don’t have to do all those steps those are just extra steps to increase your chance but what I do it just plant straight into the ground water and leave a bowl over the ground where the seeds are. Go to Lowe’s or wherever you can buy what you wana grow and start again it’s trail and error now I’m 14 and have been relatively successful planting pumpkins in the sand and adding good quality soil on the vine of the pumpkin

I wrap the stem with aluminum foil and that keeps the squash bore from drilling into the stem.
I keep DE sprinkled on the bottom of my squash. Also, putting worm castings on the surface around each plant helps deter vine borers and squash bugs.

I usually end up growing too much summer squash and eventually run out of neighbors to give it to.
I'd slice it up, put it on trays in the freezer and then put them in baggies.
You can pickle it, if you know how to can your own food. It is really good pickled.

Yes, they attack all squashes and pumpkins. See my pumpkin pit videos for varieties that can sometimes live through the vine borers.

My plants are scrawny. I put a piece of raw fish in a container with my onions and other squash plants and they are much bigger!

I am not aware of one.
If you add nasturtium an plNt radishes next to the
vine it might help during the growing season.
Radishes are supposed to repell a wide range of bad bugs.
Tea tree and neem oil. 1ml each to 1000ml water and water where your squash were.

Every year I hope to have too many squash or zucchini, but never do, and none of my neighbors leave us gifts of them lol

Diatomaceous earth is useful for some pests but I've never found it helpful to be honest. Yes, boiling/cooking kills bacteria and virii.

Start the count from the time transplants go in, or if starting seeds, about the time they get a couple of sets of true leaves.

Too hard to know without seeing it and knowing the temp. Maybe too much moisture, and depending on the seeds, some need light to get going.

I prefer not to as squash roots are very sensitive to being disturbed. You can try but be very careful planting the seedlings out.
