I am a product of chain migration... My great-grandfather moved to the U.S. on an H-2 visa looking to establish a better life in this country. Impressed by his job-performance, his bosses agreed to sponsor his petition for a green card and became a permanent resident. He was able to bring his wife and 5 children into the United States from the Philippines. He became a naturalized citizen soon after and his wife and children followed... His eldest daughter brought my mother and his two young children here... I am one of those children and I oppose all efforts to end chain migration

He had apprenticed in Spain as a blacksmith prior to his arrival in the US, and ultimately he secured a position as a blacksmith with the Pennsylvania Railroad. Eventually, he became a US citizen. He asked for NO entitlements! He demanded no welfare benefits. He voted LEGALLY only AFTER he became a US citizen. They actually look through past tax returns and assets as proof. Security has to be of paramount importance, so the President was totally correct in stressing the importance of robust border controls & radically reforming outdated immigration laws. Immigration should be on an Australian ‘points based’ system, whereby only skilled workers, who do not have a criminal record, are considered for citizenship. The US doesn’t need folk with criminal records, or who have a drug problem, coming in and then settling in inner cities where they can push up the rate of crime. At minimum, a naturalized citizen can only bring as many immigrants as he or she is able to financially support, in case they ever become indigent. Proof of income or assets is a mandatory hurdle for any visa petition. They won't even process the immigrant visa if the sponsor doesn't have the resources.

The visa lottery and chain migration should have been eliminated decades ago. Immigration should be based on merit and need, not relationship to a US citizen or permanent resident.
Chain migration claim of 'virtually unlimited sponsorship' is simply not true. A US citizen sponsoring a relative must have sufficient financial resources to fully support the immigrant if that immigrant becomes indigent. They actually look through past tax returns and assets as proof. I don't know anyone who has such "virtually unlimited" resources and as someone who has sponsored an immigrant spouse, let me tell you, the system is quite strong and there are many, many hurdles. I had a much, much easier time gaining permanent residence when I lived overseas long-term.

Nixon (R) - 6 yrs in office. 76 criminal indictments. 55 convictions.
15 prison sentences.
Johnson (D) - 5 yrs in office. Zero indictments. Zero convictions.
Zero prison sentences.
So, let’s see where that leaves us. In the last 53 years, Democrats
have been in the Oval Office for 25 of those years, while Republicans
held it for 28. In their 25 yrs in office Democrats had a total of
three executive branch officials indicted with one conviction and one
prison sentence. That’s one whole executive branch official convicted
of a crime in two and a half decades of Democrat leadership.
In the 28 yrs that Republicans have held office over the last 53 yrs
they have had a total of (a drum roll would be more than appropriate),
120 criminal indictments of executive branch officials. 89 criminal
convictions and 34 prison sentences handed down. That’s more prison
sentences than years in office since 1968 for Republicans. If you want
to count articles of impeachment as indictments (they aren’t really
but we can count them as an action), both sides get one more. However,
Clinton wasn’t found guilty while Nixon resigned and was pardoned by
Ford (and a pardon carries with it a legal admission of guilt on the
part of the pardoned). So those only serve to make Republicans look
even worse.
With everything going on with Trump and his people right now, it’s a
safe bet Republicans are gonna be padding their numbers a bit real
soon.
So let’s just go over the numbers one more time, shall we? 120
indictments for Republicans. 89 convictions, and 34 prison sentences.
Those aren’t “feelings” or “alternate facts.” Those are simply the
stats by the numbers. Republicans are, and have been for my entire
lifetime, the most criminally corrupt party to hold the office of the
presidency.

One of our public school buses got rear ended two days ago. After picking up a Spanish girl her dad pulls out of the driveway in a white van the bus stops about 400 feet down the rd. for another pickup and the father plows into the bus. He was an illegal no licence no insurance. Backs the van down the rd. puts it in his garage and has his son drive a pickup up to the back of the bus. Immigration should be on an Australian ‘points based’ system, whereby only skilled workers, who do not have a criminal record, are considered for citizenship. The US doesn’t need folk with criminal records, or who have a drug problem, coming in and then settling in inner cities where they can push up the rate of crime. Merit based system? There is already a merit based system. You need a skill, education, refugee, marriage or family connection to come here. These are the type of visas. I don't know why he's proposing something we already have. Most migrants have some kind of skill or education. It's the language and fee factor that mainly stomps them. At minimum, a naturalized citizen can only bring as many immigrants as he or she is able to financially support, in case they ever become indigent. Proof of income or assets is a mandatory hurdle for any visa petition. They won't even process the immigrant visa if the sponsor doesn't have the resources.
