It reminds me a joke. In Russia women have three life stages: "девушка" (young girl, 小姐), "женщина"(mam, 女士 ) and "извините" (sorry to bother you, 麻烦你了)
And the final stake бабушка, babushka, unless they've been inner babushkas all their lives.

I would say for native english speakers, imagine this as the difference between "woman" and "female". Female may be used as a neutral adjective but as a noun it is typically demeaning. You would say "I saw a woman today", not "I saw a female today"
That's not the difference she explained. It's more like saying something is feminine in a negative way or that a woman needs to be feminine. In your example, the word is bluntly biological in a way that can be demeaning, like saying 'it', and the same is true of 'male'. That's the opposite.

A husband would work tirelessly in the field, so their wife didn't have to, and could take care of the family. They loved each other. They took care of each other. Money was a byproduct. Equality was irrelevant. This still applies to the lucky few, where ever they may be.

@@skyworm8006 I did not say it is a 1:1 comparison, I was making a comparison in how it comes across. Also, that is not true for male - they are not impacted by misogyny. Insults based in misogyny are more common and more demeaning

In Taiwan, I was told 男的 and 女的 are kind of rude. But then they also seem to use 男生 and 女生 to refer to adults, and also use 小姐 by itself to refer to a woman (without any of the negative connotations it has on the Mainland), so maybe the connotations are different.
There are regional differences. Originally 男生 and 女生 mean schoolboy (男學生) and schoolgirl (女學生). Using them to refer to adult men and women is common in Taiwan, but much less so in mainland China.

Those characters you use - 男生 and 女生, are the polite way of saying man and woman in Japanese, meaning Gentleman and Lady, and not just Man and Woman. (In spoken Japanese; Nansei and Jousei).
I know from my visits to Taiwan that Japanese culture is still a big influence on the nation, so perhaps there is a historical reason?

Hi Jeff, it's perfectly fine to address a Chinese woman as '小姐' or '女士'. Even if she finds it a bit formal, she will still consider it very polite and respectful.

As for words used in informal settings like '美女,' it's best to use them cautiously-not because of the speaker's age, but to avoid potential misunderstandings, as it might sound like flirting.
