    So my 9 year old is deathly afraid of spiders, like true phobia. She won’t read National Geographic magazine anymore because once there was a spider picture. So anyway, I try to encourage “healthy spider interactions”, like cute stuffed animals, or stories with cartoon pictures, etc which she usually hates anyway. I showed her this video and she was full on belly laughing by the time the spider was playing pool in the saloon. I think we’ve made real progress here! Thanks!

      In a perfect world, yes, you wouldn’t have to study any other insects. But the reality is when you study any form of invertebrate zoology (or even just general ecology like I am for that matter) you will have to take entomology, and almost definitely you will have to hunt and pin insects.
      Fun fact tho: you can’t pin most spiders bc their exoskeleton is too fragile and will deteriorate exposed to air, so most all spiders are kept in alcohol :)

    • @OriginalDonutposse
      @OriginalDonutposse Před rokem +17

      I like the Freudian slip of “love bugs” for “live bugs” there. Bird person here but I love live birds and cringe at the thought of people killing specimens to draw and document them (a la Audubon - most of his drawings are from birds he captured and/or killed). I mean, I’ve picked up a few dead birds in order to identify them and to save for a study on a then-prevalent outbreak. And I get banding and releasing. But I didn’t even like killing chicks to feed the snakes at the zoo I worked at.
      Thanks for pointing out the difference between an entomologist and an arachnologist. I wanted to, but didn’t want to belabor the point or be rude.

      Yeah oddly enough real Americans love real American values. And since the wild west was probably the biggest single cultural event in American history and is truly and wholey American, obviously we're going to like that thing we did and invented.
      We also like personal freedoms and liberties, at any cost. No matter the risk, even if people get hurt because we'd rather people get hurt while exercising free spirited independence than get restricted(And thus hurt) by government intervention.
      Pretty much all the places in America not completely washed out and blended with foreigners to the point theyre not even Americans anymore(Nothing against those people, just saying, theyre not red blooded Americans, theyre Mexicans and Russians and Japanese and Iranians, ect, not the same as an American family with 6 generations of American history) are going to be huge into all those American cultural norms. Southern hospitality. Loving guns. Wanting true freedom at any cost. Rugged individualism. And because America is such a young country and our mass expansion was noticably recent, the idea of having boomtowns and temporary hot spots show up along the road and become attractions is kinda a thing in our culture as well. When us white Americans got here, this was 90% unpopulated, empty land. There wernt very many natives here so a crap load of that expansionism was into wild unspoiled unknown. Naturally caused such landmarks to arise as civilization was brought to empty, beautiful landscapes.
      We really are like that, when you get out to the small towns and heartland of America. Obviously if you go to some big city its just a collection of 'everyone' like any city anywhere in the world. Kinda feel bad for peopel who go to foreign countries and then just visit cities, since you cant understand a nation's culture if you dont go to the heart of it, the small towns, the places where the culture is still preserved.
      If I go to Africa to learn how Africans live, I dont want to be in Capetown, I want to be in some small white farmer's ranch or off in a traditional village.

      I can second that. Entomologists have a very strong weird energy. I'd like to think it's a fun, quirky kind of weird.
      Also, I have a spider question, since I don't have a lot of experience in that area. Jenny mentioned "spiders on corkboard" in this video. Is there a situation where pinning a spider (to foam, not literal cork) would be preferable to putting it in ethanol?

    • @seaspinster3246
      @seaspinster3246 Před 4 lety +17

      Allison Homiak From what I understand and have seen, putting a spider on display not in ethanol only really happens when either it is a complete reconstruction not made of spider parts or if the abdomen of the spider is removed cause that part tends to rot and can’t be preserved well outside of an ethanol solution. Most of the times spiders have to be kept as wet specimens cause they tend to famously shrivel up when they die, which isn’t great for pinning. That’s what I’ve heard on the subject anyway👍

    • @allisonhomiak2336
      @allisonhomiak2336 Před 4 lety +10

      @@seaspinster3246 Thanks. I wasn't sure if there was some kind of exception to that rule, but the reconstruction thing makes more sense. Putting a pin through the cephalothorax seems pretty destructive for a research specimen, even ignoring the dehydration issue.
      But then again, I've seen some pretty bizarre choices in specimen preservation (looking at you, house centipede with a million pins holding up each of your legs), so I didn't want to risk missing an opportunity to learn something, you know?
