    26:00 - I think you could make a pretty good case that a more prominent brow ridge is an adaptation to the generally treeless landscape of the Houze Prairie. If Earth’s terror birds preferred open forest habitats, it would make sense that the harkundi would have a more pronounced brown ridge to protect its eyes from the constant and intense solar radiation of the prairie.

    I really love the mentality going into your design process, rather then just disregarding the pop culture influence as impractical or something that doesn't seem feasible to evolve naturally, you really take the time to consider how such an animal could evolve into the closest analogue to the inspiration, it's always a bit of a hurdle to jump over when coming up with my own spec-evo stuff, there's a lot of variables here but i guess my question is how much thought do you give to a creatures evolution, ecology, etc when designing them? because my mind gets really hung up on trying to account for most of these steps, if that question makes any sense at all. Really hope to see more tutorials like this! Great work.

    • @TalesofKaimere
      @TalesofKaimere  Před 5 měsíci +5

      Thank you! I don't really have a set process. Sometimes it's like this where I have a concept then refine it, moving backwards from the initial premise. Other times I start with the ancestral species and consider where it might end up, so it's more building up to a modern descendant. The latter process I'd say is probably better speculative evolution, since my thought process follows how a species adapts over time, but sometimes you just get a neat idea and it's easier to work backwards you know? As far as ecology goes, I tend to try to stick to basic principals (i.e. long legs for open terrain, broad snouts for bulk feeders, long necks for high browsers) and use these to specialize an animal from a generalized ancestor. Specialized animals aren't as adaptable so they often look more or less like their ancestor. With giraffoid examples: my Discokeryx descendant looks very similar to their ancestor, while the unicorn and large pronghorns coming from a more generalized ancestor can get pretty different.

    This way really a very good video !
    I love that we have finally a special episode showing the way you process to made an animal, and with your own artstyle. As I think it give a good way and example for others people to do their own creatures (if of course they want to use your method, anyone have the right to use the method he want), but also to put more context regarding the way you create and made creatures for the episodes you realize.
    Like the time it take, all the differents aspects and factors to take into account (with plenty often important) and some additional more minors stuff.
    I like the new art of the Harkundi, even if it is here more an additional illustration than a true redesign, althought the first old design look more like a rough portrayed of a specimen watched by an Assembly's naturalist by from a far distance and/or maybe after the bird have come to a minor fight with a congener or another animal (hence why the tail would look so physically disorganized).
    And as of course what only go for one single specimen cannot be used to illustrate an entire species, a new, more defined art is for sure needed to represent it.

      I have redesigns of the ankylosaurs in the future, and that would likely make for a great example of the more complex anatomy. As for kundi: it's a Shu/Dolani word for running bird. Many Shu names for terror birds, bathornithids, rheas, and dromaeosaurs have kundi as part of their etymology.

    Thanks for uploading this. Do you have general art advice for beginners? I find that my art tends to look a little stiff, and others have noticed too.
    The new Harkundi design looks great! I appreciate that you just wanted to make a cursorial (is that the right word for fast?) terror bird much like classic media depictions. Great to spread awareness about what terror birds were actually like in terms of lifestyle. I think they’re very misunderstood by general audiences.

    • @TalesofKaimere
      @TalesofKaimere  Před 5 měsíci +2

      Thanks! I'm not sure what recommendations I'd give. Art teaching isn't something I've much experience with. Best advice is to draw from life. Look into different poses to get a sense of weight and motion if you feel it's stiff?
      Thank you! It is the correct word, yes. Well, maybe not fast (hippos and bears aren't cursorial but are very fast) but cursorial generally means something adapted for running. There are cursorial animals slower than non cursorial, but a leggy cursorial animal is going to be much more efficient at running. Takes a horse or dog a lot less time to get tired than a bear or lion even if they can run around the same speed. It was Ben's idea but it was a great one! Was important to me to also have some ambush bruisers more like real terror birds but still great to have something like this guy.
