  • Leroy Sibbles is one of Jamaica's greatest contributors to reggae culture. Sibbles is mostly known as a member of the rockesteady group The Heptones.
Most are unaware of Sibbles role as a bass player, musical arranger, song writer , and talent scout while working at Studio One.
Sibbles says, "I was never a bass man. I was a man who played some great bass lines. A bass man is a man who play bass only. I is a man who just grab the bass and play lots of hit song."
Sibbles is responsible for the bass lines on some of reggae's greatest songs: The Cables "Baby Why", Cornell Campbell "Queen of the Minstrel", John Holt's "Love I Can Feel", Inner Circle "Make You Sweat", Burning Spears "Ceeation Rebel" and "Door Peep", Dennie Brown's "No Man Is An Island", and The Abyssians "Satta Massa Gana" "Declaration Of Rights"
Sibbles basslines have also been used on mega-hits for artist like Jazmine Sullivan, Beres Hammond, Inner Circle, Tony Rebel, Sizzla, Tony Tuff, Capleton, Luciano, Mighty Diamonds, Yellowman, Musical Youth, and many more...

Oh what a joy this video upload was... love Leroy Sibbles/Heptones.... this is exactly why you can never beat the era of physically buying music (instead of digital/streaming we have today). When buying an album it was never just about the main group/singer, but all the credits listed on the back sleeve of everyone involved in the making/production. We knew all the players of instruments/arrangers/backing vocalists etc and all equally revered in their own way. Today's music buyers know just the front face and rarely nothing else behind the music. Top upload @ I never knew TV

Wow, what a man gifted! When he was talking about Satta Amassagana, I was thinking that the bassline isn't really the thing that stands out for me, more the horns. And then he tells us that he arranged them too! And I remember hearing Chronixx in a OnStage interview years ago saying that Sibbles was a big mentor of his. So the man is continuing to define Reggae to this day. Legend.

I'm very happy that Leroy Sibbles survives and has opened up about his Bass work with Studio one and others. Leroy Sibbles as lead Vocalist of the Heptones is one of the great Jamaican vocalist. He also should get his due as a songwriter.
The Heptones (with Sibbles) were one of the best Jamaican vocal groups of the Rock Steady/Reggae period, and should be right up there with the Wailers as the best of Jamaican music. Also of note is Leroy Sibbles background vocals work with other artists including Bruce Cockburn.
