Diagnosis of PCOS requires the presence of atlease 2of the 3 features . 1. Clinical / laboratoy findings of increased androgen 2. Polycystic ovaries on Ultrasound 3. irregular menstual cycle . Looks like your daughter might have met the basic criteria for the diagnois of PCOS . Additional tests like TSH, Prolactin, progesterone are ordered just to rule out any other causes for her symptoms and confirm the diagnosis of PCOS, which i believe they have done . But her thyroid, cortisol levels weren’t checked which may be an issue. GP doesn’t seem unduly worried by primary amenorrhea but I would like to get to the bottom of this problem! We won’t give up!! I am hypothyroid due to RAI therapy for Graves Disease after my daughter was born 23 yrs ago. I have been on levoxyl/ levothyroxine since then. I am 46 yrs old and for the past year have been experiencing menopause type symptoms so my dr ordered a hormone panel. My prolactin was high, 47 I believe. Now May need a brain MRI. I hadn’t taken my thyroid medicine before the blood draw though like normal because I ran out the night before and was picking it up after the test since the pharmacy wasn’t open, could this be why my prolactin was high?
Hello doctor, I recently did a prolactine test and got 52. the thing is that I did the test 1h after waking up and I read that prolactine level are usually high during the morning. My periode is generally regular ( I only missed one period this past year, instead of this period that I missed I started spotting for 15 days straight). Should I redo the test in the evening or worry about this? one of the symptoms is that i get very bad acnee during my period and even 7 days before it starts, it s not only 1 or two pimplesbut my whole forhead.

I didn’t check my thyroid levels and I don’t know If I have pcos but I have a regular period every month and I check for the LH using the strips which always shows a positive line. I don’t feel like I have symptoms of high prolactin and my Dr. said that my levels are ok. I should mention that I was pretty stressed at the time of testing and before due to stuff I was dealing with. My question is that should I do something about this whether take another test or check my thyroid levels?
Like your doctor said your prolactin levels should be fine considering your clinical picture. Dont worry too much about the thyroid also. If it might be the cause your doctor should have asked for that test already . Trust your doctor , he is the best person to suggest what is good for you Dr K MD

Hello Doctor. I was wandering as it pertains to prolactin in males,is it possible to have prolactinomas when the levels are in the normal but very high end of the range? To give a more complete picture of my question, the prolactin would be in the very high end of normal and testosterone would be in the very low end of normal. For example the free testosterone would be 300.00 nanograms per deciliter on a reference range chart of 205.00-781.00 and the prolactin would be 12.00 on a reference range chart of 2.64 -3.13 nanograms per milliliter.. These are roughly actual real numbers I've witnessed.Thanks for any info!
First things first . It is extremely rare( near impossible ) for some one to have normal prolactin levels with prolactinoma. Coming to your hypothetical report . The levels of testosterone are normal and nothing to worry about . Cause for the prolactin levels . please cross check the reference range as the normal reference range in majority of the US population is usually < 15 nanogram/ml in males and < 24 ng/ml in females. If you got the reference range wrong , i believe issue is resolved as both prolactin and testosterone levels are normal . Mild increase in prolactin can be due to several cause . Most common being the day to day variations and it s response to stress. Some labs have a protocol to collect 3 samples in a span of 3 hrs and test them to negate this effect . Another cause can be just hypothyroidism which can contribute to the increased prolactin levels . Levels in prolactinomas are usually greater than 10 times the upper limit , saying that they needs to confirmed with MRI. Please speak with ur doctor , and I believe they will help u as they have entire clinical history DR K MD

It takes some time for the hormone levels to stabilize (usually 6 weeks) once you are placed on a thyroid tab. Things will be fine , follow the instructions of your doctor Dr K MD

Just got further reference these tests were in my 16 yr old daughter who has been diagnosed with PCOS. Her progesterone level came back

I also never got pregnant due to infertility issues with my husband.

Prolactin levels will be increased in pregnancy and this normal . Prolactin levels will prepare for milk production immediately after delivery
