@@IM125 I've always objected to this simplification. Yes, I guess the Puritans fled persecution, but they also persecuted. They ran out the other non-Puritan settlers and certainly had no tolerance for other religions. I guess it's hard to have too many religious zealots of differing religions in the same space - they needs the freedom to go forth and persecute others. :)

James Buchanan's niece Harriet Lane acted as his First Lady, and was the first woman to hold that title. She really shaped the role to what it has become today.

Honestly, I don’t care that neither of them are married…it’s just the hypocrisy to want to keep their private lives private while interjecting into others lives . I’m 33 and a male with no desire to get married before the age of 35. I am really independent and I love my space and I actually applaud them for having boundaries on their ideals on relationships. I just wish they would extend the same courtesy to others.

Harriet Lane acted as hostess for the only President who never married: James Buchanan. She was President Buchanan’s niece. No reason why someone can not step in to fill the role. First Lady doesn’t necessarily need to be first wife.

I think she was using Jeanie as an example of how a spouse of a powerful person can cause trouble. If we don’t know who our president’s romantic partner will be before he or she is elected, we won’t have a chance to scrutinize that person’s life and career to make sure they won’t be a liability.

2) And the greatest point is, if he’s lying about having a girlfriend and he doesn’t, lying as we’ve seen, is a major character flaw.

People just single-shame folks. That's what this is. A person being married or single has no bearing on their ability to do the job. In fact, oftentimes when you are married, your relationship is strained because of the pressure of your job. It doesn't mean it's a bad marriage, but definitely, that spouse has had to make sacrifices because being in an elected office means that basically, that spouse is sharing you with the world.
I worked on Capitol Hill, and I've seen the challenges those types of jobs present to people's home lives. I think having a single person as President is totally fine.

The First Democrat elected after the Civil War, Grover Cleveland was the only President to leave the White House and return for a second term four years later.
One of nine children of a Presbyterian minister, Cleveland was born in New Jersey in 1837. He was raised in upstate New York. As a lawyer in Buffalo, he became notable for his single-minded concentration upon whatever task faced him.
At 44, he emerged into a political prominence that carried him to the White House in three years. Running as a reformer, he was elected Mayor of Buffalo in 1881, and later, Governor of New York.
Cleveland won the Presidency with the combined support of Democrats and reform Republicans, the "Mugwumps," who disliked the record of his opponent James G. Blaine of Maine.
A bachelor, Cleveland was ill at ease at first with all the comforts of the White House. "I must go to dinner," he wrote a friend, "but I wish it was to eat a pickled herring a Swiss cheese and a chop at Louis' instead of the French stuff I shall find." In June 1886 Cleveland married 21-year-old Frances Folsom; he was the only President married in the White House.
Cleveland vigorously pursued a policy barring special favors to any economic group. Vetoing a bill to appropriate $10,000 to distribute seed grain among drought-stricken farmers in Texas, he wrote: "Federal aid in such cases encourages the expectation of paternal care on the part of the Government and weakens the sturdiness of our national character. . . . "
He also vetoed many private pension bills to Civil War veterans whose claims were fraudulent. When Congress, pressured by the Grand Army of the Republic, passed a bill granting pensions for disabilities not caused by military service, Cleveland vetoed it, too.
He angered the railroads by ordering an investigation of western lands they held by Government grant. He forced them to return 81,000,000 acres. He also signed the Interstate Commerce Act, the first law attempting Federal regulation of the railroads.
In December 1887 he called on Congress to reduce high protective tariffs. Told that he had given Republicans an effective issue for the campaign of 1888, he retorted, "What is the use of being elected or re-elected unless you stand for something?" But Cleveland was defeated in 1888; although he won a larger popular majority than the Republican candidate Benjamin Harrison, he received fewer electoral votes.
Elected again in 1892, Cleveland faced an acute depression. He dealt directly with the Treasury crisis rather than with business failures, farm mortgage foreclosures, and unemployment. He obtained repeal of the mildly inflationary Sherman Silver Purchase Act and, with the aid of Wall Street, maintained the Treasury's gold reserve.
When railroad strikers in Chicago violated an injunction, Cleveland sent Federal troops to enforce it. "If it takes the entire army and navy of the United States to deliver a post card in Chicago," he thundered, "that card will be delivered."
Cleveland's blunt treatment of the railroad strikers stirred the pride of many Americans. So did the vigorous way in which he forced Great Britain to accept arbitration of a disputed boundary in Venezuela. But his policies during the depression were generally unpopular. His party deserted him and nominated William Jennings Bryan in 1896.
After leaving the White House, Cleveland lived in retirement in Princeton, New Jersey. He died in 1908.

I am looking at what a candidate is trying to do as a potential president for my country, including who he surrounds himself with (his spouse). So, I believe a President's marital status is important in how he does the job and who he may bring into the White House - I need to know those details.

This is a good question. I do not think it should matter, but...What if the single president is a player and every weekend is at Camp David with a newly minted flavor of the week. I think it would be too big of a distraction for this country and 2017-2021 was enough for a lifetime. I think for me it would matter if the future president was in a committed relationship or single and dating around.
Just because he’s married doesn’t mean he couldn’t still be a player.
Practically, just like any high profile career position, your personal life would be of interest to those who may be investing millions into your career. We ask candidates to provide tax returns, which is also private. IF you are single, not a problem. But if you are saying you’re in a committed long-term mystery relationship… nah, thats a problem.

It shouldn't matter. There's no official role for a presidential spouse to play. They are given duties as a courtesy, but those activities could easily be done by a hired person.
