If you see one side is darker, it’s the charcoal that should be up. It’s to filter out the air that’s coming down from the outside air. You’ll notice that when you pull the cabin air filter out, there’s a bunch of dust particles and leaves on top of the cabin filter, that’s where outside air blows things down into the cabin vent. I hope that make sense.

You do want to replace the cabin air filter regardless if there's odors or not. Over time, the cabin air filter will have build up of dirt and debris from the outside air that get caught on the filter and will start going having a bad odor. I've noticed Camry does get pungent odor and I'm not sure if its the Camry only but notice it mainly on Camry complaints. I would suggest doing an AC Evaporator cleaning and air freshening to see if it'll get rid of the odor or not. You will have do it a couple of times to get rid of the smell, also change out the cabin air filter regularly every 15k miles or if you're in a very dusty area, 10k miles. Good luck

Wo buji dao. But, I think the arrow should be down, meaning the direction of airflow. Whew...this is not easy to figure out.

It depends on the brand of filter. Does it say "up" next to the arrow or does it say "air flow"?

That's because he is installing an OEM Toyota branded filter which says "UP" next to the arrow.

I have found which filter I needed at my local autozone and replaced my old one but it still stinks when I put my AC on low, it doesn’t stink if the AC is on higher settings unless it was on low for a half a minute. How long does it take for the smell to go away after the cabin air filter is changed or could this be coming from another part?

What in the world is this filter supposed to do closed up in the glove box? I took the one out of my Echo years ago and can't tell the difference between having and not having it.

You should replace with OEM filter, about 15-20bucks, stay away from cheap filters, they can damage more then help!
