As a participant of r/place 2023 I'm slipping in the note that the expansion of the Canada flag that first erased Reimu has been conclusively proven (both by looking at the text that was written beneath, the timing of the botting, and finally actually looking at the raw data that Reddit released) to be caused by the Moroccan Building bot army (which was also responsible for printing anti-queer message on top of the pride flag and griefing Turkish flag). The Building continued to bot the area several times and only stopped by the end of the Bad Apple animation.
When r/placecanada, which had moved elsewhere before the botting, returned to their original spot, their group was split between people who want to make peace with us Touhou Hijackers and those who want to remove Reimu in order to put more of their national art in. Their admins allied with us, and the second group became known as 'rogues' - a group of apparently a few people who quickly turned into the butt of jokes in our community shortly after the event for their funny malding copypasta. It takes another day for the fact that Canada is now our ally to spread around and for Touhou r/place group's hatred for Canada to alleviate.
EDIT 1: the double flag in the newly expanded canvas is also Moroccan Building's work.
Now I'm split. On the one hand, those moroccan dudes did r/place a favor, and on the other hand, screwed everything up for one of my favorite fandoms. I'm torn.

there's something really funny about the fact that r/touhou started to help canada after feeling really bad for them.
it's unironically reflective of the main series in a way, or at least the first half of it. most of the time the "big bad" just ends up going to party at Reimu's house, despite doing some downright world ending shit, they can still get drunk at the hakurei shrine during the parties regardless of what happens.

Nice compilation and performance, tbh we should thank them. The Reisen Bad Apple bullet was epic. The Canadian truce gave us some cute Reimu holding beaver fanart. The whole affair was pretty cool, engaging with someone the whole time who didn't seem to be using many bots.

A large number of edge lords were trying to turn the maple leaf into a marijuana leaf near constantly. It wasn't a lack of skill on the Canadian's part.

As a humble Canadian, I apologize on behalf of my kind for the murder of Reimu Hakurei.
I was actually participating in r/place; not with r/touhou, I was with the United Gacha Alliance, but I remember checking on Bad Apple to help where I could, and later helping defend Reimu from the malicious actors trying to wipe her out. The tons of various art pieces and memes that came from the Touhou subreddit was honestly amazing.
R/place is interesting. There will be entire groups that will band together for representation, as expected, but also groups that are there purely for chaos. Chaos bring conflict.
This simple yet complex art project shows that we as humans cannot stay at peace. There will always be someone to spark conflict, and that fire will usually only need one spark.
Anyway the whole fiasco was fun to watch, I didn't participate, but more power to the Canadians and Touhou communities, both made some pretty neat art.
Ah the war memories, it was a fun event, even thou I wasn't in the discord it was really fun just watching day after day the war progress, also the memes were hialrious.

As someone who was in Touhou's r/place discord for this event, I can confirm there was a ton of shit that went on (and I can confirm a lot of what @AstroChara said).

I have many images of reimu over thr course of r/place. First was pc 98 reimu- died and pc 98 marisa cried. When she was revived marisa had cat ears in place of the wizard hat ribbon, but reimu sustained several deaths later and every time it happened in a few seconds (shitty bots), also marisa would cry every time
