What's a Food Industry to Do?

  • I'd been asked by the food industry to give this talk at an industry breakfast, but 3 days prior to the event they got cold feet and dis-invited me. The good news is, the internet's a much larger audience than a room full of food industry folks who likely wouldn't have cared much about what I had to say in the first place. So here's my take on what the food industry can do, why they're not going to do it, and what we can do about it.

    This is so scary. Thank you so much for this awesome post. As a French girl living in the US, I'm still outraged at most of ads and packaging for food here. All these "natural" and "no sugar" processed food actually turned me into some kind of a paranoid person in the supermarket... There's only one way out for me: home cooking. So much better, healthier.. And fun!

Smaller portions, takes more time...and you bastards have way, way, way, way, way more good food over there. -.- Whenever in Europe, I'm somewhat astonished by how even the freaking snacks in corner stores has less sugar and tastes better than the crap in North America. :(

      There are still substances in those "0 calorie vitamin water" that are very unhealthy. It is always best (even when exercising) to drink water. Through a well balanced diet of plant and the ever so occasional meat, you should get all the vitamins you need to sustain a healthy life style. If you are worried that you are still not getting enough vitamins because you are unable to eat properly, a multi vitamin is good to look into. Not just any multivitamin that you buy at massive food chains(I highly recommend doing a lot of research into which ones would be best for you). To simply put, something I always like to think about. If it hasn't been around as long as man, then don't eat it. People have yet to create something healthier through refining and processing of the original food.

    • @aserta
      @aserta Před 8 lety +1

      Well, if a simple set of rules would be implemented in the functionality of a government.
      Like:
      1. no people over the age of 40 are allowed in any form of political system that deals with decisions, not as advisers, not as workers, nothing.
      2. no more money coming from the outside. You get a salary, and that's it, that's all you need. You have more money than the salary, well, you're suspect. You get yourself an investigation
      3. no more single seats of power but no overly inflated groups either. A number is to be picked based (how that is chosen is not in discussion here).
      4. no more complicated laws with umbrella systems. No more passing laws just so you can shove in under a ton of irrelevant (to the law subject) clauses. The law should be one, expressed clearly, expressed without 101 paragraphs, based on empirical data, complicated laws have bad results and enable evil people to do evil things.
      5. no more stupid people. You want to lead others? Oh boy, you need fucking credentials, you need to actually know how to count. No more retarded inbred sheep herders talking about laws on the internet for example, when they don't even know how to open a computer, let alone use it to browse.
      6. no more outside influence, who leads a country, the politicians or BIGCORP? Since when can a company threaten an entire country with lawsuits and make them recede laws (see BIGSMOKE lawyering up on a country who's entire monetary situation was under their soles for passing laws that made it hard for people to keep a blind eye to smoking cancer sticks).
      Other things could be added, the above can be reformulated, but these seem to be the main hitters. Aged, greedy, fat, encrusted, brainless simpletons "ruling" over others. Old should be taken out, in with the new. Since when has it ever worked for us, as humanity, that old be kept in high places. Old has always taken us to war, made us slaughter each other. You don't hear about new getting people in decade old issues. It's always old, old, old sparking flame left and right.
      Old is always gangrene on the new and therefore should never be allowed to lead. What the fuck does it say about us as humans, that we let the old and senile leads us? People who know nothing at all or care about the plights we face?
      Take space for example. Why would old people ever bother with space exploration? They'll never reach up there. Where as young people want to reach up there, but can't because instead of setting science and learning up on a pedestal, old people decide, well, i better send me some of those young people to war.

    I don't necessarily agree with the sentiment that we need government intervention with this comercial manipulation of word play. We do, however, need to educate ourselves and be responsible consumers and up our level of critical reading in order to see through the gimicks and understand the concepts and tactics mentioned earlier in the video.
    "no sugar added" doesn't mean that it has low sugar, it just means that they didn't add any. anything beyond that is an assumption and they are playing with our ignorance to seek further info... like turning over the box. The federal government doesn't have to waste tax dollars to pander to the consumer. We need to stop being lazy with our purchases.

      +Maik Sievers Sugars are necessary. If we didn't eat glucose, we'd not be very well-off, particularly our brains which consume copious amounts of glucose just to keep the lights on, so-to-speak.
      *Too much* sugar is the problem, and i's really, really, *REALLY* (just barely enough emphasis) easy to eat too much sugar (sucrose and fructose, which are decidedly not good in large amounts) in our society. Almost every single product that's produced gets extra sugar, be it yogurt, certain cheeses, cereals, bread, on-and-on. :( It's mildly depressing.
      The fact that we literally need this stuff (food) to survive makes this battle quite difficult. We need reformation of the food industry, not destruction.

      +lies damnlies Most people don't understand that there is good sugar and bad sugar and that it's necessary. CARBS ARE SUGAR, take some oatmeal for example, take a very small bite and leave it in your mouth for a little while, and you will feel it is sweet. Organic unrefined raw brown sugar, is good especially if you need the energy, or to make your smoothies taste better so you can handle them. The sugar from fruits is extremely good, fruitarian diet is definitely one of the best diets out there. I'm not saying drink kilo bags of sugar, but you can definitely eat that much fruit and not worry about it.

    • @liesdamnlies3372
      @liesdamnlies3372 Před 8 lety +2

      Yer Make Me Sick To Be Human
      *"CARBS ARE SUGAR"*
      It would be more accurate to say sugars are carbs, since carbohydrates include starches and cellulose, not just sugars.
      *"Organic unrefined raw brown sugar, is good especially if you need the energy,"*
      Unfortunately no. There is effectively no difference in health effects between brown sugar, refined white sugar, and say, honey. Brown sugar is by definition refined, the only difference being that brown sugar still contains molasses.
      *"The sugar from fruits is extremely good, fruitarian diet is definitely one of the best diets out there."*
      Yes and no. Fruits and vegetables are quite good on their own. Note that fruits generally contain high quantities of fructose. The reason fresh whole fruits are good is because of the high amount of fibre present. This makes one feel rather full after say, eating a single grapefruit.
      Compare that to fruit juice, which will likely contain in one serving the juice from anywhere between five to nine of the given fruit. That's a *hell* of a lot more sugar, and it won't leave you feeling full at all, which will lead to the urge to continue eating.
      *"I'm not saying drink kilo bags of sugar, but you can definitely eat that much fruit and not worry about it."*
      If you eat a kilogram of fruit and don't exercise vigorously to burn off all that sugar in short order, you are doing yourself no favours. You might as well drink three bottles of soda.
      This isn't a case of "good" sugars and "bad" sugars. You either have too much, too little, or a healthy amount. That's it. Any differences between sugars will be handled by your body (there are many, many mechanisms in the human body that are all about converting, storing, and retrieving chemical energy, such that it matters little what types of sugars you're eating, just so long as you are getting enough but not too much).

    • @robertb7230
      @robertb7230 Před 8 lety +10

      +Boris Baskovec Well..fruits are full of fiber and sugar; the fiber in fruit is the important thing. Because you would have a really difficult time eating enough of most fruits to get to the amount of sugar you get in a single glass of juice--the fiber, which can't be digested and thus has no calories, just fills you too quickly.
      However, in juice, that's all removed and you're left with JUST sugar. So you can get a dozen pieces of fruits worth of sugar in a single glass. For example, for a standard glass of apple juice (About 12 ounces) you need to eat 6-8 apples. That's not easy to eat. But a kid can down a couple glasses of apple juice relatively quickly.
      So, fruit does have sugar in it, but it also has fiber, which prevents you from taking in as much sugar because it fills you up--juice gets rid of the fiber, and that's the issue.

    • @Psythik
      @Psythik Před 8 lety +1

      +Nayr747 Wrong. Sugar is sugar. Fruit sugar is no healthier than added sugar, or even cane sugar. One piece of fruit a month is plenty in order to survive, and the only reason why you even need that one piece of fruit is to prevent scurvy.
      Just look at Steve Jobs. Dude swore by his fruit diet and ultimately that's what killed him. You can't just eat nothing but sugar-based substances and expect to live a healthy life. You need to eat a variety of foods, and you need to avoid any and all sweets as much as possible, including fruit. Sugar is still sugar, whether it comes from an apple, dessert or even your beloved soy milk. Bottom line is if it tastes sweet, it's not good for you. That's why I avoid even bread.
      Edit: While we're here, I should mention that you should avoid oils as well. Just look at the statistics; back in the 1950s when we used butter and lard for cooking, heart disease was at an all-time low. But then Crisco came along and insisted that vegetable oil is better for you in order to sell more of it, and now heart disease is a bigger killer than even cancer. Correlation much?

    I nether understand why processed food is cheaper than real... Why the unprocessed and unpacked nuts may cost tripple as fried salty nuts for example???
    Raised in Russia and lived in China, USA and Europe for many years, i can say now - the USA is a country where to find real healthy food is the most difficult thing. You need to read package, compare sugar, energy level, fat. If you got a smoothy in Philippines- it will be only banana, water and ice in it. Guess what you will get in the "healthy" smoothy in some fitness studio in US? In traditional restaurant in China you normally get 2 small pieses of water melon for dessert. Compare it with any restaurant in US or Europe? Today i alwas say "the food must be simple". Cooked potato with salty cucumber, (as i got it in my childhood) won't make you fat. As long as you don't add whole milk, butter, steak with souse and glass packed orange juice "no sugar added" to it. Enjoy your meal :)

      +Nikto Bezimjannyj *I nether understand why processed food is cheaper than real... Why the unprocessed and unpacked nuts may cost tripple as fried salty nuts for example???*
      Economy of scale. If the manufacturer makes 1,000 times as much of the processed nuts as they do the unprocessed/lightly-salted ones, the former may end-up costing less per-unit-weight than the latter.
      *the USA is a country where to find real healthy food is the most difficult thing.*
      In the USA there are literally some places where you can't even find a grocer. It's packaged, corner-store crap or nothing. They're called "food deserts". Even worse is often in a grocery store the processed crap is cheaper than the fresh food. Which is bloody ridiculous.
      Also, hands-off the butter dude. Butter makes *everything* better. :p (There's some evidence now that dairy fats aren't deserving of the bad rap most fats get, even the saturated ones. And anyway, we all need *some* fat to live. And it does genuinely make things taste better. The difference between 2% and skim milk in a coffee is stark, for example.)

    Yoni, I like these 'call to action' videos, however, I think what most of these videos (and other videos by other people) tend to fail to capitalize on are the actual "how" to band together and make a difference. If the end of the video is a vague "we must do more" then the response will also be vague - and the result is that the video raised awareness (of that I thank you, as this was a good video) but the long-term result is that there was no long term action because if your audience is unable to discern the difference between fruitloops, craftmac, and others when compared to real food, then they are also likely the type of person who doesn't have a clue on how to initiate and achieve meaningful action.
    In your future videos, please take a few moments and an extra step to 'capture' the motivation you instill and focus it on a specific way to achieve action.

      What can be taken away from this vid is that processed foods are mostly sugar coated crap. We don't need to band together to change our diet, that's one's personal responsibility. The action an individual can take is to change it's diet, plain and simple. Don't buy into advertising, they're not truthful info-mercials, their only purpose is to sell you shit so that they can make money. And if people are unable to discern processed foods vs actual food, if they truly can't figure that a whole tomato is healthier than a can of tomato sauce well then.. then we're f-ed tbh.

    I don't care for your 'solutions' at all. Why can't people just turn their products around and read the label? Stop acting like people have no responsibility for what they buy. If I can look so can everyone shopping in a grocery store.
    Targets kids? Parents make the purchases. Stop acting like consumers are zombies who have no control over their behavior.
    Edit:
    A response to the people saying "some people can't read"- *If they can't read the label then they can't read the advertisement.* Get a better argument.

      +UncleMilton The food labels simply don't tell the whole story. The quantity of artificial sweeteners does not have to have to be listed. There's a lot of other exceptions but you get where I'm going. Processed foods simply take a LONG time to evaluate. Maybe you have a ton of time on your hands but I have to get through the grocery store relativity quickly. To which I'm sure you'll quaintly and dismissively reply with something as ignorant at: That's your problem. Why can't we have a simple label that DOES tell the whole story? It hasn't been updated in a long time.

    Food cooked at home is the healthiest food.Today's life-style hardly allows any time for doing so. It is time we return to the ancient arrangement of sharing responsibilities, one earns for and the other cooks the 'bread'.My mom, aunts, grannies have never thought of making a professional career. They have all stayed at home, cooked fresh, healthy food 3-4 times a day, for whole family (most days 20-25 persons).I remember that buying processed or ready-to-eat food was a taboo. Grains, lentils, milk and vegetables were bought and cooked at home. Food industry benefits from this fad and our own in-capabilities.

      +Gaurang Pandya My mom and dad were capable of doing both: Cooking and working. It's not about the time we don't have. It's about the time we don't use. (I Don't remember who said that, but it's true.) They maybe watched less TV (or youtube ;-) ) than other people and took that time to cook with fresh food. Later they taught my brother and me how to cook on our own. Nobody has to give up their dreams (e.g. a career) if you have a intelligent plan on how to master things.
      But I agree with the rest of your argument.

      You are right, Eva Schleva. In India, my parents and most of the other couples have had the 'distribution of work' concept. The males would work hard as bread earners and the females/ spouses would be home makers. I am pointing toward the currently prevalent 'no cooking at home' trend and the disadvantages of over dependence on outside ready to cook meals.

    I learned a long time ago that eating better is pretty simple: Don't buy premade stuff but make it yourself. Not only will you save a shit ton of money but you'll feel better.
    I don't see any reason to protect people from themselves. Freedom is letting people live how they like; it's their responsibility to learn how to eat.
    But I love this video because it is so educational. That is what we need: more food education not to turn our countries into North Korea.

    • @geogallant8172
      @geogallant8172 Před 8 lety +1

      Erm, the government has been controlling your diets for ages. You think the food pyramid was invented by nutritionists?? :P that was ALL political. You think you have so much choice, but all those brands are owned by larger ones... theres only a few mega-brands you actually have access to when you go to the grocery store. If you don't grow/process food or store animals in the barbarically legislated way its done now, you cannot produce/provide options for choice. government is trying to make it so gmo's don't need to be labelled in NA and they are about to break into the EU market (a few years ago, EU said they'd never accept gmo's)
      You want peoples diets to stop being controlled? So does the OP.

    I agree. Food industry also needs to be held accountable - everyone has a role to play and has a responsibility. If a car is sold and is unsafe - a recall is made. If a toy is sold and is made up of hazardous material, a recall is made. If food is sold that is loaded with sugar, salt and fat to enhance its addictive effect, and is killing millions prematurely with disease - it is not recalled, it is sold over and over again, in the name of profit.

    I love your passion and totally agree advertising claims made by food companies should be truthful and legislated. However, the most important thing in our quest for a healthier public is not watchdogging these advertisements, it is educating the public. You see, the real implication in "the food industry is a business" is that businesses make what sell. If we all only bought healthy items, thats what would be in the store. It is our demand as consumers that drives the items in a grocery store.

    Education is the first step. Becoming aware of what we consume is invaluable, as we can raise the next generation with this knowledge. Theoretically, this will lead to a governing body that can best serve and protect its people.
    Without getting to far into it, we must separate money from politics. Food corporations are only allowed the ability to misinform people due to influence in law (lobbying politicians/those with position to change/create law).

Make the healthier stuff more accessible and affordable, and the unhealthy stuff (which nobody needs, really) less so. This is what is necessary for a healthy life.
