A Two Wheel Tractor's Impact - Increased Production With A Happier Crew

  • There are a lot of growers who are at a scale between hand weeding everything and using a four wheel cultivation tractor. It's in these scenarios that the Power Ox can be the best tool. Andrew Budgell "Budgie" and Kerry McCann describe why the Two Wheel Tractor made such a big impact for them. The Plant Jr was the first two wheel tractor they had on their farm and it allowed them to continue to double in size each year using the same amount of labor. The Power Ox's ability to easily turn at the end of rows, and switch implements were perfect for them while they were at a certain scale. The learning curve of the Power Ox was much more gradual than trying to adapt the farm for a four wheel tractor and it makes more sense for many. Since transitioning to mechanical weed control they were able to add a Tilmor 520 tractor but not until learning with two wheel tractors first. Another benefit they share has been relieving the crew of time-consuming, despised hand weeding. Keeping rows clean, while helping the crew enjoy their work more makes a big difference with burnout and motivation.
Small growers face unique challenges and often must rely on older equipment that was developed many years ago for mechanized cultivation. This often means farmers are forced to rely on parts that are obsolete, poorly constructed or difficult to find.
Our goal is to produce a variety of implements for planting, cultivation, harvest, post-harvest, and more.
These implements will be built to last and fully supported by Tilmor, making it easy to find and purchase the equipment you need to maintain your farm.

excellent video. For yrs people have laughed at the users of the walking tractors, referring to them as toys, and missing the science behind keeping the weeds out of the crop. Only a small handful of working operators, have kept the history alive, and are finally seeing it advance again, after nearly dying off post war. The way forwards to easy chemical free produce is only limited by your imagination.

Thank you Jeff for being one of those that have kept the history alive!

Would like to follow thse folks more in their market gardening. Do they have a you tube channel of their own or website?
My question about these units, seems like everyone operating one, walks at a high speed. Not something this 82 year old wants to do, must they be operated going that kind of speed?

They have an awesome operation for sure!
I do not believe they have a YT channel however they do post videos on their Instagram and Facebook: facebook.com/LaughingCrowOrganics

Great question on the speed. Speed can sometimes help to actually improve the tool tracking and the action of the tool but it is not necessary. Most of the operators you are seeing are experienced and knocking out a lot of acreage so they want the speed.
Most of the two-wheel cultivation tractors are geared a bit higher so they'll typically be a bit faster in general. Two options for slowing them down is throttling back and/or changing the pulley size of the engine (an option we have if you ask us). Depending on the size of your operation and need, the E-Ox we offer may make more sense as it can operate much slower and would be much easier on your body.

    Tilmor,
As a small scale farmer with 1 acre, will the E-Ox be able to do the necessary cultivation ?

Do you have 1 acre under production/cultivation? What type of row spacing are you planted on?
It probably comes down to expectation and current mechanization. If you are currently doing it with something like a manual wheel hoe, you will find a huge improvement with the E-Ox if it fits your spacing.
Typically we'd say the Power Ox makes more sense if you have a full acre under production, but again, it varies depending on what you are coming from. We do have a customer doing an acre with the e-ox and they are very happy.
I would definitely suggest calling in and having a conversation with someone in sales. We are happy to see whether something we have may or may not fit your needs and help direct you either way.

I walked behind a David Bradly. For years. It was a man killer. Now my back and hips are in pain. A rider gives you a break and rest. You will not be young for ever.

These are half weight and size of a David Bradley. I've had hundreds of walk behinds and the DB is one on the list that's not easy to manage
