- In our short documentary, “Just Dala,” we explore the small but growing sneaker culture that exists in the city’s Cape Flats. Known colloquially as “bubbleheads,” South Africa’s sneakerheads are in a league of their own. Here we talk to some of the scene’s most influential insiders to learn about life in one of the country’s poorest communities and how locals live their life with dignity and with the freshest kicks.

Sometimes life is about the little victories. Spending 2K on some kicks is more accessible than saving up 50k to buy a house. The next step is to take that money out of Nike's hands and make a Kaapse brand, and rotate that cash in the community.
Well said!!
Respect to these guys for sharing their story & to Imraan for shooting a slick mini documentary. I can’t say I agree with the narrative which places such high importance on appearance, but I can try to understand. I wonder if there are any narratives from the same/similar communities where the narrative is about finding meaning / identity beyond fashion? At the end of the day, I can’t help but think that this exactly the kind of narrative a multimillion corporation like Nike would want - it makes them richer & the poor communities poorer.
I come from Retreat, one of the areas mentioned in this video and I definitely do not subscribe to this mentality. These days I speak to people of the evils of capitalism and the legal theft perpetrated through fiat currency. I have never owned a pair of nikes in my life and the last two pairs of shoes I bought cost me R400 a pair.
David Scott aweh Kiffness!
@@The_Angry_BeEconomist what you're saying in simple terms is that you're a minimalist. Unfortunately not everyone can adopt that type of lifestyle. Yes, It would be essential in alleviating them from financial constraints, it would also divert them from a material driven lifestyle. Gen Z however makes that near impossible a lot of people's trends are based of bandwagon aesthetics. I highly doubt that this is something that would change. Especially thinking of how significantly the sneaker culture has expanded of recent comparing it to the time this video was made.
Thank you David, as a coloured person from retreat also , i agree fully with the Angry Economist as well as you.
they are portraying fashion and yes how coloureds are over their takkies , but they did not also put in the bad side of this culture, where young kids who cannot afford this lifestyle they portraying goes out and steals , robs , becomes gangsters to obtain those things. unfortunately this is the truth about our areas and for them to glamourize it for recognition , i cannot believe it is for the good of my people but for their own pockets and rise to fame.
they could have used this platform for so much better to show the real cape coloured experience good and bad.
Well said!!
Respect from the coloureds in NZ and Australia! This is moers big!

Dope editing & camera movements . . . the content was just too awesome as well! #Nice1
Dope production , content is relatable for people growing up in poor neighbourhoods, the culture is usually inclined this way
I need those Vince Carter 2. I've been looking for a fresh pair.
Gosh Youngsta !! He is everything 👐 he explains it perfectly, the style comes from a place of struggle.. it's a hard truth to grapple with... now we need to move beyond this mindset ✊ we have an identity, we don't have to be defined by the poverty around us or the sterotypes projected onto us, let's break barriers and rise above
Auj. I understand the kak but it's honestly stupid to still work a kak job only to live for sneakers.
Thèlen Kayser Vet bra
highsnobiety you should feature philippines sneaker culture next

Tekkies, may bru! Watching in Cape Town.
That dude doesn't know what the Cape Flats are . It's not the poor housing projects , it's the flat lying land of the Cape . Because of the many housing projects also called flats on the Cape Flats many think this is the reason for the name .
Love this!
Woah this is incredible!
Nice video on Cape Town. Congratulations from "In The Mighty African Jungle, Bao Electronic Board Game was born; now available in Apple App Store."
Dope! Nice genuine feature...
I got to take a trip out there!
Best 12 mase poeste minutes of my naai life. CPT for life. Tsek.
You tried hard to be coloured
This is dope🔥🔥
That white slammed Toyota truck was nice, the BMW too
Yes it's sad that our people think name brands are important, but it comes from a world of where you never thought of being bigger than your circumstance, slavery, then apartheid, never being good enough for the rest of South africans, we don't care about being called coloured because we too mixed to be anything else & for me to be called mixed race, sounds like a lab experiment & other than other races. The mind set is changing though, but the saying at the end is so true, if you make in Cape Town you can make it anywhere, you are exceptional.
Youngsta way se jy 😍
This was dope
That kids right there! That’s sneaker culture
video is fire
We sell flowers ya😌 Salute en Respek

damn!! This is dope
Poor people who invest in sneakers but don't invest in their future. This is the coloured mentality on the Flats
Go get lost wally .
King Aitjie 👑👏
Salute to the owes in this video🤙 real die hard sneakerheads
Man that’s a crazy ass slept on sneakers culture, so sick😫
I'm cloured, but i'm sorry property (house) is my "takkies".. such a shame seeing backyard dwellers wearing expensive takkies and a redbat gap is always in the mix but they sleep at night behind wooden walls and a metal sheet roof stuffed with yellow pages and news paper to prevent the cold from coming inside the place 😂😂😂😂
aware, I come from Retreat, I own three properties these days but I walk around wearing torn clothing and worn out sandles, people look down on me but I go to my flat in the middle of the CBD while they go to their "flets"
@@The_Angry_BeEconomist do you feel kwaai and better than others?
@@capetonian9763 why would I feel that? Strawman much?
nicely done! ill just skit no names lol!
Great documentary but wheres Hayden Manuel?
American urban culture is everywhere because style travels.
Should've played takkies by youngsta cpt
Does this culture help benefit the poverty striken communities? Does it lift the community? Does it help educate the kids? Does it help keep kids from gangs? From what i just watched, NIKE is the only beneficiary to this culture
Stockholm syndrome
Uitstiek isi main ding haters vangi pain ding... tsek
I think it can, it could be the start of a serious sneaker movement, inspiring the youth to create their own sneakers whilst already having a culture surrounding sneakers and fashion in general, opening the economies there to introduce fashion manufacturing that can potentially see a high degree of success ans growth because of these large subcultures, what economy with no culture can truly succeed? It's just something that helps keep them occupied and helps creates bonds between the people involved imo
I used to be a sneakerhead......that’s a poor mans mentality!
Ballers
lmao most pairs I saw were random outlet pairs, do they not get actual go releases there?
That tekkie culture will never change in Cape Town.

I'm from Cape Town and never understood the bubble sneaker culture. The shoes look like kak. Rather than spending all your money on a pair a shoes, send your kids to college, invest your money etc. That YOLO and live for the now life are for stupid people. I love my coloured community but ffs strive for more than a Nike.

As much as I love most of guys in this video, the same ol' lame excuses and narrative are tired.
Raoul Virissimo here u can die when u walk outside anytime of the day.. thers no long term so spend everything on what u want now. I might die when I go to the shop later with a bullet to the head.. don’t speak on stuff you know nothing about..
@@charldb972 What are you and your community doing to change it? Glorifying gangsters, consumerism and not improving ain't helping. Typical victim mentality. All the money you spend on hoarding sneakers and clothes could get you out of there long time ago

Y'all got to do Malaysia, hmu if you need a representative. Easily top 3 sneaker and hype culture in Asia
Mikail Ranjit over Japan, Hong Kong and South Korea?
@@mydickinabox6129 We had a guy crash his car into an Adidas store during a Yeezy release. We just have a more unique sneaker game I'd say, maybe not better kicks but definitely a bigger unique taste
Not generalizing, but there’s a lotta fakes out in Asia fam
Mikail Ranjit define unique sneaker game
Mikail Ranjit dude Malaysia is all about the hype man, personal opinion as a fellow Malaysian
Rich people buying handbags more than these guys cars and Cape Town Guys killing each other over shoes and drugs. People need to educate themselves and uplift themselves and their communities.

Damm shoes aren’t that serious fam
y'all will never understand because y'all never grew up or live in the ghetto
Sashin-blade Smith how about they try and improve the life of their kids or some shit
Sashin-blade Smith Im from Boyle Heights in Los Angeles believe me I know what ghetto is. It’s just ridiculous because these people have no ambition to make progress, although maybe they don’t have the mentality to see it. In my community we sacrifice these stupid luxuries to go to college or invest in property to secure a better future for our families.

THE REAL WEST COAST - Kaapstad
Sneaker heads r the poor people whom buying the expensive kicks💯💯💯
EYYYYYYY
This video is such an insult. It's an insult to themselves because it shows how shallow minded people are, they'd want to spend thousands on sneakers while they're hungry. It shows why people on the cape flats will remain on the cape flats, poverty stricken and gang infested areas, because of irrelevant things like sneakers. They don't understand that they're feeding a mindset that kept us in this position.
Kaylin Spiers Awe bra i agree.I self used to live there
its all for the takkies
What dala naaiers
All that money spent, yet nobody designing their own kicks. This is all cool and all, but not really a mentality I can respect. Mense dropping 15K on a pair of takkies, but won't start a business. Thats just kak stupid in my opinion and not forward thinking at all for coloureds as a collective.
Maybe spend less of your paycheck on shoes, and rather on stuff that's going to get you out of the gang-ridden suburbs???
Y dd they show the fake one that hung there in the streets
One photo from SMALL STREET and Johannesburg wins 😂 I mean all I see are fakes

What a joke. Guys are talking about how they’re struggling yet buying sneakers instead of moving out of their shacks. And did they try to take credit for the vintage aesthetic in fashion right now? It doesn’t count when your country is permanently stuck in the 1990s.
