- Well guys I did it again...I hurt my Subaru while off road...Sway bar bushing came detached and Subaru found a slight bend in my rear trail arm along with a bent end link. Check out the video of details and as always thank you for watching!

I have to say my 2018 Khaki Grey Crosstrek has 4000 miles on it after a year of meekly driving around Phoenix. I live vicariously through your Southern AZ adventures with yours. Really for all the offroad (serious offroad) driving you do it is an amazing piece of machinery. Always enjoy and appreciate your videos.
Thank you so much Roslyn. You should get out there and have some fun. I appreciate your watching along very much and they are great little cars.
WOW! I am planning to get a 2019 Crosstrek in February. It is pretty much identical to your 2018 even the color, which I really like. Your videos have really gotten me jazzed to get my car. I have been driving Rav4 for the past 6 years and I do love it as well. Just a bit bored and wanted something different. The difference in gas mileage was the deciding factor for sure. I will be checking out your other videos as well. While I am living in Florida for the past 19 years, I moved here form Denver . Lots of Subarus in Colorado, not so much here. You videos aregreat.
Thank you Timothy I really appreciate it my friend. And congrats on your new Crosstrek coming soon. Colorado has an incredible amount of areas to explore and have a good time. Back in 07 some buddies trailered our motorcycles to Silverton and rode a bunch of the old mining roads. Incredible trip! I really want to go back in the Subaru. Cheers.
As with your other vids I've seen, very informative and well produced. Thanks!
Thank you so much.
I'm glad that got home safely with missing parts and all. The car is barely broken in. Never mind breaking. Keep in touch with the dealer. The Crosstrek is advertised to take rough roads.
Thanks for the great video. It was cool seeing the underbelly .
Thank you Deb...Hope all is well in your next of the woods and say hi to Zippy for me. :)
i call em battle scars! gl on the fix and glad you're safe from this small incident.
Thank you bro! Hope you are doing well.
My Forester had the sway bar bushing break as well while I was off roading. I noticed subarus don't like extreme torque or a big load on the sway bar. I actually heard mine break. The driver tire was on a pretty large rock (about 13-15in height) while my passenger tire was on flat ground. In turn , this created a large amount of pressure on the driver side bushing and it snapped off. So now I don't go over large rocks on a single wheel. I don't think the oem sway bar and bushings are made for such extreme, cockeyed angles. I'm considering installing a more solid, aftermarket sway bar and bushings! As this will inevitably happen again. Thanks for the awesome vid!
That is a bummer. So I am assuming your bushing was bent or damage in some way? The bolt holes at least? Mine was perfect? Really weird actually like the bolts just came loose and fell out...I have heard from a couple other Crosstrek owners who had similar issues. One where Subaru found the bolts loose on inspection for regular service. I can't prove it in my case, but I think it was a factory issue on mine?
Great narrative and video. Thanks for sharing.
Great video, Rick!
Thanks Trent
@@AZdroptop shared it on my FB business page too. 🤜🤛
Thank you Trent! I'll be in touch soon.
Hey, Rick, Rick here, too...as much off roading as you do, for the sake of not being stranded somewhere in the back roads... Jeep... or Toyota 4x4 ... I dig Subaru, but I think your videos are showing the limits and weaknesses of those vehicles for off roading. Stay safe and Cheers! Great video!
Thank you Dusty, I hear you...I need to avoid the rocks a little more or stick to just dirt roads.... :) Hope you are doing well brother!
Great video. They are made mostly for very light off-roading and paved driving. Just by looking under the car it’s easy to see that the design was not for medium off-roading but light off-roading. It’s a compact car it’s an Impreza. I love mine so far especially during winter time, rigid axel design is meant for real off-roading. If there was no winter where I live I would certainly buy a Subaru Crosstrek.
Thank you for your comment and for watching along!
Sorry to hear that happen, thanks for sharing! And thanks for the 2:1 video ratio!!
Thank you Drew...appreciate your watching along.
I think in the end it matters of how difficult or easy a car can be fixed and returned to the original condition. If its easy and only a matter of spare parts the crosstrek ticks the practicality box again. I still feel bit sorry you have to go through these hassles. Hopefully everything turns out fine
Thank you brother. It is a pretty straight forward replacement...just have to wait for parts.
Great Video Rick, Looks like a quality control miss on Subarus part for sure. That undercarriage is really light duty and even though you do mainly light off roading, I don't think this little car is quite as capable as it appears to be. Ive been hearing a lot of paint issues where I live which has caused me to revaluate my next purchase. Thanks for the videos
Hi Mike, I agree on the paint...All of my Subaru's have had thin paint over the years. I hope to find out more here today on what Subaru will do about the Sway bar bushing...I just don't see how it is related to the "impact" on the trailing arm. Cheers brother!
Sorry to hear about her suspension damage Rick. At least it wasn't too severe and you could drive back home. By the way my trip to Athens, Al. went smoothly. Gas was much cheaper down there, as low as $2.499/gal. Now it is probably even cheaper. I got to drive the 900+ miles each way with just one gas stop. Every other time with different cars required 2 stops. Each time I got gas I got as low as 34 mpg and a high of 38. That is with an actual calculation and not the car computer. The elevation in NE Tenn and SW Virginia is around 2300 ft causing you to dig in to higher RPMS which uses more gas but I never needed more power and drove anywhere from 60 to 80 MPH. Also the car was comfortable, no seat issues. When I stopped for gas in SW Virginia on I 81, a guy driving a U haul truck couldn't stop complimenting me on my car because of the Cool Gray Khaki color. Actually this time 2 weeks ago I left at 12:01 AM ET Monday morning and arrived around 1:30 PM CT. I was tired after driving down all night and into the afternoon with a 3 hour nap before I left.If I wasn't 66 years old it would have been less tiring especially with no coffee or food before the trip down!
Thank you Dave! And wow, it sounds like the Crosstrek did fantastic on your little trip. That is great to hear. These little guys really are good travelers and 34 and 38 mpg is awesome. Glad it went well and hope you enjoyed the visit.
Comes with the territory whenever you go off road. Luckily, I haven't had any problems as I been off roading a bit and riding stock. I hate to burst your bubble Rick but there's a major recall about to be announced concerning a valve spring breaking. Have you heard about it? It spans all across the Subaru lineup including the rwd. More details will be announced on November 5. Let's see how Subaru will handle the problem. I am confident they will step up to the plate and fix it that's if our Crosstrek is affected. Cheers and good luck. Keep those videos coming.
Glad to hear you have been unscathed so far! I continue to cause myself problems, but it is all worth it. :) I have not heard about the recall as of yet so thank you for the heads up. I will check in with my buddy and see what he has to say about it as well. Thank you for hanging around and watching the videos!
Looks like the recall only affects the 13 Crosstrek and a few other Subaru models. 140,000 cars total or so.
hey rick
its me that had the tree sap burn through the paint. the local dealer offered to redo the hood but the roof which i feel is more important is gonna have to just take it i guess. SOA said the same thing. so i guess its just bad paint on these new cars. i might have the roof painted or just throw a 3m clear on it idk.... the paint on my 96 outback is still in pretty good shape considering the age. i highly recommend everyone get some sort of paint protection on there cars if you don't have a garage. it might not even be subarus fault though. the environmental regulations might have made them change to safer but less robust formulations. for my next car purchase ill research if any manufacturer has better than average paint.
for your damage here its pretty extensive. i might say u go offroad more than the average person. all those vibrations might have loosened the bracket off and then control arm impact just jolted the whole system and it came off. that and maybe your wheel and tire package is really stressing system? maybe its balanced but still exerting some vibrations? would you expect a reduced duty cycle on the shock running heavier tires/wheels? just some thoughts. your videos here kinda highlight to me what these cars really are. lifted Impreza hatches. the extensive use of stamped steel is really and indicator that these are meant for light duty. we all want a king of the hammers style baja runner sort of like a local motors rally fighter. but that purpose built vehicle is close to 6 figures. our crosstreks start at $22k-$23k ish? we might be asking to much of our little CUVs here. or they might be able to take it but with increased maintenance requirements. does anyone manufacture heavier duty suspension components? aluminum controls arms and so forth? or maybe the stamped steel parts are designed to give and protect the unibody from stress.... who knows what the engineers intended?
by the way the other day i got a letter from SOA say the the CVT warranty had been extended out to 100k miles. was wondering ur thoughts on that. goodwill or confidence that it will make it that far or because increased failure rates. not sure why they would offer it out farther than the standard 3yr/36k
hey watch all ur vids keep em comin. ur videos give ppl a good a idea what to expect since you actually off road.
Hey brother, thank you for the update on the tree sap. I can't remember if I mentioned I have a little bit of "staining" on my hood from sap as well and will have to check with the dealer to see if they will do anything. Glad to hear they are at least going to paint the hood for you and sorry about the roof.
The whole sway bar bushing situation has me confused still since I just can't pin point why it came off. Seems like the vibrations over the last year must be the culprit, but it seems like that really shouldn't happen. I do spend some time off road, but not excessively and I am pretty careful. Since posting the video I have heard from a few folks who damaged trailing arms as well so at least I am not alone. :)
It is hard to say about the wheel/tire set up. They are a bit heavier per wheel and I have heard from some about a positive wheel off set causing early bearing wear, but I will have to wait and see on that. I suppose shocks and struts could wear a bit faster as well along with the brakes. I imagine those who are running the 235's will find out sooner than I will with my 215's.
I will let you know what I find out about better suspension components and let you know. I do feel like the Crosstrek should be able to handle the stuff that I do, but there is no question I have had some good clunks against the rocks we have around here. :) Thank for watching brother and for your insights... Cheers.
Thanks for sharing. Looks like that trailing arm should have been boxed like the front lower control arms... Maybe a mod to do...
Do you think any of it might be due to the non-stock wheels? For example, did the Subaru folks make any suggestions about that? I assume it would make no difference since their outside diameter is about the same, but thought I'd ask.
I don't think so. It probably was all the offloading he does that loosened the bolts. I'd suggest he tightens to spec every once in a while.
Hey Michael, Subaru didn't mention anything about the wheels and the Sway bar shouldn't be affected by them since they are basically the same size just a bit heavier.
Is it normal? Under the damaged the bar is quite cheap way constructed..
Like hallow just bended metal U shaped so it will be good for reduced the weight but seems not that strong for or last long.... might Subaru things?
I always remove one rear endlink before I head to the trail. (I unbolt it from the driver lower control arm and the sway bar then toss it in my trunk) Gives the rear suspension more articulation on the trails and prevents the sway bar bracket from ripping off the car.
That is a good call Brian. Weird thing here is I don't think it was pulled off or ripped off...the bolts just seemed to have come loose. Really strange.
It sucks that you need two new parts, BUT, they're sacrificial parts to keep you from messing up something more expensive like the rear sub-frame.
Theory here: is it possible that the bracket was loose from the factory and the off road action made it finally fall off? And it's simply coincidental with the damage?
Honestly, that is how I feel about it. Not sure how the other damage would be related myself? Still need to talk more with Subaru. Cheers.
Hi Rick Just took delivery of my 2019 Crosstrek. I am trying to find new wheels and tires for it. I noticed you don't have standard tires on yours. Did Subaru have anything to say about that. I am in Toronto and have been told i will have warranty issues if i go to a nonstandard tire size. By the way I just spent 4 days in Tuscon and loved it.
Hi Paul, my good friend who works here at Tucson Subaru didn't seem to think there would be any warranty issues with my wheels tire set up. Subaru dealers sell Crosstrek's with aftermarket set ups so I think you should be fine. My tires are actually the same circumference as the stock tires and about 1/2 inch narrower. They just look beefy. :) Biggest difference is the wheels size and wheel offset. For the 15" wheels to fit over the brakes they have a +15 offset which some worry could cause faster bearing wear. I am not an expert, but from what I have read the jury is out on that topic as some think it is a bad thing to do, others say no big deal. Method Race wheels replied to me via email saying they have not had any issues with it causing problems. I guess I will find out down the road. ha ha. Let me know if you have other questions...happy to help.
And glad you enjoyed Tucson! We have a lot of great stuff around here. All the best Paul!
No evidence of bolt shearing off. More than likely bolt rattled off bouncing around on those back roads. There are reasons why maintenance manuals specify torquing bolts at maintenance intervals.
Definitely. Thanks Tom
Trophy trucks draw white lines on every bolt, so if the line doesn't line up than they know it's loosened.
Sorry to hear Rick. Still looks like you had some real fun. So Rick I got my first Asshat to door jack my passenger side door about 6 months got a small nick in the paint was wondering you have any recommendations for the paint pens for Subaru's
Thank you my friend...definitely fun out there! I actually bought a paint pen from Subaru directly for my 2014 Crosstrek and used Dr. Color Chip for the small ding on my 18. www.drcolorchip.com It worked great. Sorry to hear about the ding...the first one is always painful...
@@AZdroptop Thanks Rick I will check those out. I was thinking going down to my Subaru Dealer. Another Friend of mine he uses couple of pens for different cars. Hope you have a great rest of your week...
I know this is late, but if the bracket was loose from the factory, wouldn't you have heard it rattling around? If not, perhaps the impact that affected the trail arm changed a resonance on the sway bar bracket and vibration had an impact. Not sure I can believe the nuts would have backed all the way off without you being able to hear it though. Thanks for sharing lessons learned. Makes visual examination of the undercarriage after off-roading a good practice.
The local Subaru engineer traced it back to the factory..the bolts were not tightened to spec at the factory. It affected a number of cars. The trail arm has no reference to the sway bar bolts so any impact their would not have been related.
The bolts backed out slowly over time I guess and on that trip they fell out? I think I have heard from 8 others who reported the same problem on their cars. Kind of crazy.
I had the same knock...that progressively got worse. I don't know if the bushing completely came off and end link bent as in your situation or if it was just loose. Everything was fixed under warranty. Before taking it in I tried to take a look to see what was causing it but I had no idea what to look for. Thanks for the video...it helps me put a picture to the words.
Hi Chase thank you for sharing your experience. In the end they did not cover my sway bar bushing or end link under warranty. I didn't fight it too hard. They did discount the parts and labor some. You are the second person to write about sway bar bushing and end link problems. I am 100% sure my trailing arm damage had nothing to do with the end link and sway bar bushing.
@@AZdroptop Maybe our cars' bushings didn't get torqued correctly at the factory. When was yours built? Mine was built 09/17.
I bet that is right Chase. I don't have the date in front of me, but I bought it in September so a bit earlier build I think.
That is strange. It seems like all the damage happened as a result of the bolts backing out. The bolts should not have backed out like that. It makes me wonder if it was those particular bolts not being torqued to spec at the factory or something happening while off road earlier and the bolts just slowly working there way off. I have a 18 Crosstrek and I am wondering if I should check my bolts to ensure they are not backing out either.
Ya Michael it is strange for sure. Hopefully when I talk to the tech a bit more I will get some more insight.
Funny to see this. I recently aquired a 2018 Crosstrek from Copart. (Hail Damage with 3K on the clock) When I first took it out I noticed lots of clunking, pulled over to take a peek under the car. The actual rubber bushing had popped out. Most likely because of how Copart moves the vehicles around. Just funny how it now sems like that will be a weak point for future maintenance. Different scenario, but similar outcome.
Wow! Crazy. You are the 3rd to mention a similar problem. Seems a factory error in torquing the bolts maybe?? Congrats on the 18! And thank you for watching.
Two questions. Do you keep one stock wheel and tire in the back in case of a flat? And secondly, did the bracket bolts shear off from the frame or just rattle loose to where they fell out?
Hey Justin, I put the spare in there when I go off road just incase. No shearing at all, no damage to the bracket or the holes of the frame. Clean as can be. That's why I am thinking they got loose for some reason? Crazy.
Love your videos on the Cross Creek What size rims and tires are you using What type of tires and what size rims Thank you
Hi Wayne, thank you very much! Appreciate it. The wheels are Method race wheels VT spec, 5 x 100 bolt pattern, 15" x 7". Tires are BFG KO2's, 215/75/15's. They fit a stock 18 + Crosstrek with no problem.
Do the liftttttt. :) My advice... stay with 1.5" or under. You're not going to find many spring lifts that do more than 1" so if you want more spring than body lift you'll have to do a combo. Which is fine if you ask me. You'll retain the factor struts without hurting them, get some increased spring rate and height and get the rest of the lift from the spacer. I essentially have 1.5" spacers with King standard springs which add .25" to .5".
Nice. I haven't really looked into them in depth as of yet, but probably at some point. Any ideas what might have caused the bolts to come out of the Sway bar bracket? I just not getting it.
@@AZdroptop Errrggg. Wish I could be of help there, but I'm not sure.
All good brother. I'll find out at some point here soon.
probably wasn't tight from factory, rick. or... you know bouncing around on those rocky roads will also cause things to loosen. I had several screws come loose under the tripod ring of one of my lenses causing it to seize when I tried to switch from landscape to portrait orientation a couple of weeks ago after about a 100 miles of bouncing around on rocky roads. that cost me a couple hundred bucks
Sorry to hear that ed and thanks for the input. I really tend to agree with you on this. Cheers
I have a 2017 crosstrek limited.
Would you recommend doing anything before off roading? Lift. Air pressure...ect
Oh and should I keep eye sight on or off?
That is a good question about eyesight? I do not have it so I am not sure how it would be affected off road? Might be good to turn off. Biggest thing around here is all of the rocks and I found out the hard way that 18 wheels are not the best idea off road. Easy to bang your wheel on a rock and easy to cause a flat. :) I did both. Biggest suggestion would be to go with smaller wheels so you have a larger sidewall to protect against that stuff. I have not aired down at all with the Crosstrek and probably will not unless I get into deep sand somewhere. Just take your time and have fun. These little cars are pretty capable out there for what they are.
Eyesight wont work off road it needs to see the white lines of a road , Xmode though that will help off road it just keeps you slow
Might check, some after market company’s make solid arms
Some of this could of happened when the car fell off the jack when u had ur flat?
Hi Todd, possibly I guess its possible. The jack incident involved the front left. I am thinking all the off roading some how caused the bolt to loosen up over time? Maybe not torque correctly from the factory? Not sure.
@@AZdroptop For the black bracket that attached to the car, were there witness marks from the bolt or nut that attached that bracket to the car? In other words, are you sure the nuts were originally there and tightened down enough to make marks on the black bracket?
Even with the wonky suspension, how did it handle the trail?
Hope it gets fixed soon.
No worries at all. That opening sequence with the out of car view is really as bad as it was anywhere. There were 4, maybe 5 spots like that where I stopped just to make sure I could pick a good line and not drop down from a small ledge and hit something under the car. Even with the missing sway bar bushing the only thing I noticed was the noise.
Rick! Man..so guess what? I ended up not picking up another Crosstrek T_T
I decided to pick up the new 2019 Forester Sport. I was skeptical until I saw it up close and test drove it. I literally just picked it up a couple hours ago. I’m certainly going to miss my Crosstrek, especially the slick styling and the CGK color. But overall, your biggest complaint with the Crosstrek (as well as mine) is really a non-issue now with the Forester having so much cargo space and extra storage/organization in the cabin area. My only concern is about the tires being thinner since the sport rides on 18” rims. Replacing the tires is going to be a little bit tougher since there will be less room for larger tires. But I’m honestly excited with the decision. Have you had a chance to check it out?
Hey Daniel that is awesome man. Congrats on the new Ride. Definitely more size and a bit more power too. Does it feel a bit quicker? Hope you still come around now and then and say hello. Enjoy the car!!! Super cool.
Rick Hutton Rick Hutton you’ll see my comments and likes don’t you worry. I’m going to stay subscribed, I like the content and always dig your upgrades to your Crosstrek. A lot of my upgrades reflected yours haha
The Forester is definitely a quieter ride and the Sport trim does come with a Sport mode called S# which throttles the torque figures and tightens the steering response a bit. And the second option is an Intelligent drive that’s like an eco mode. The X-Mode has been revamped with two different settings: Dirt/Snow & Deep Snow/Mud. Haven’t had a chance to test either yet.
Hope you get yours up and running soon. You were considering a lift before, maybe this is your sign!
Very cool, glad to hear you will be around still. And thank you.
Very nice that they added the SI drive to the Forester and I didn't know about the 2 X mode set up. That sounds really interesting and I'll have to check into that more. The lift is still on the table as is the Front bar...Just need to set aside some funds here soon or work some overtime to cover the cost. :) Someday soon! Have a good week Daniel
Rick Hutton aw man, I forgot about the LP Aventure front bar. That just reminded me, like you, I had a lot of plans for my Crosstrek hahah
You have a great week as well!
I agree with you. I think that swaybar mount came off first which then caused the swaybar link to just dangle around and bend in ways it wasn't supposed to. I would think a hit strong enough to rip the swaybar mount off the subframe would have cause the swaybar link to bend like a pretzel or rip it righout out of the joint. Not pull the mount off. Does Subaru put any loctite on the bolts of the mounts? Sounds like those bolts just rattled loose, but then again it's hard to tell from just watching a video. That has me thinking about my Crosstrek, I would hate to think those mounts could just vibrate loose. Thanks for posting and good luck!
Thank you! I am a little bummed about the bent trailing arm and end link, but my real concern in the same as yours. Why did that bushing just come off? And is the other one going to do the same? I just don't see how an impact could cause it.
@@AZdroptop Yeah, I've only used my Crosstrek on the beach as we have no rocky terrain here on Long Island :) but seeing what you went through is still concerning. On my Wrangler I have JKS quick disconnects which allow you to easily disconnect the swaybar and prop it out of the way for offroading and more articulation. Unfortunately I don't see anyone making them for Subarus...yet. However I've seen Jeep guys make their own just by replacing one of the bolts on the links with a clevis pin and cotter pin.
Nice. I have heard about the disconnect's and that sounds pretty sweet. I guess it allows for more articulation when off road? Cool stuff.
There's a guy on the outback forums and eBay that sells upgraded bushings might be worth checking out
Just an FYI--Subaru Just replaced my sway bar and endlinks at car's 1yr anniversary. It was loose at 6 months (banging around) and before the second oil change, started squeaking so they looked over everything. All the roads I drive are maintained, maybe some dirt roads now and then but nothing I didn't drive my civic over w/o issue.
Thank you Katie, that is much appreciated and I will bring that up with my service tech. Cheers.
I don't think that trail arm was damaged by an impact. Looks more to me like it has endured a significant bending force - the two ends of the arm forced towards the open side that caused the middle to give way and the two sides/flanges to crimp under compression - such deformation would also cause the paint to chip off as happens when painted metal is bent. Q: How would an impact from a single direction (i.e. direction of travel) bend both side flanges of the trail arm inwards towards each other? Surely they would have bent the same way??? Perhaps the trail arm was bent due to increased loading after the sway bar failed??
Hey Allan, that is possible. You sound like you understand this stuff better than I do that's for sure. One thing I know is if I did hit something that Had nothing to do with the sway bar bushing coming off. That was a factory mess up. Cheers brother.
Instead of a lift, would it be possible to customize the trailing arm? It looks like you could remove it, and weld a piece to complete the ‘U’ shape of the arm. Or someone may design a custom arm. Either way, best of luck
Thank you! I have had some comments on some guys who came up with a modification, but have not looked into it as of yet! Cheers
Got you some blue locktite Rick and put it on every bolt you can find. It will stop this!
True. I would think from the factory they would use some kind of locktite...I really think they didn't do it right from the factory since I never messed with that bolt at all?
'WHATTDD EWWW DEWWWW?!?!!?' - Tommy Boy
A question of curious since I might buy a XV. Have you been driving your car many times on offroad to get this issue?
I have been off-road a decent amount, but I wouldn’t say excessively. Maybe 150 total miles on dirt? I have 8,ooo miles on the car. I believe the sway bar bushing must not have been properly torqued from the factory, but can’t prove it. The dealer has no explanation.
@@AZdroptop Agree sounds like factory fault. Had to convert US miles to European km to see how long your car has been rolling. I can also feel like it must be a factory issue since if all XV where that sensitive then subaru would have been getting many more complains from customers since the car is ment to be road and off-road. However the XV seems to be a very fun and versatile car. I test drove one few days ago with the 2.0 engine. It's a bit louder than my Levorg but on the other hand a fun car to drive :-)
Very cool. When you say louder, do you mean the engine? Or the interior noise? One of the big improvements with the 18 Crosstrek was the reduction in noise compared to the older models. Best of luck with your decision and thank you for watching.
@@AZdroptop I reacted most on the engine sound, but to be honest I think also Volvo XC60 has louder engine since the engine seem to get closer to the driver. But the engine was not so loud that I felt it was an issue just that it was a big difference between levorg. Another thing to consider is that here in europe thanks to silly climate rules the subaru is forced to do 1500 RPM for around 2 minutes on idling just to heat up the catalyst. If you put R or D in position the procedure is halted till you put N or P back in again :( so it's impossible to glitch this behaviour on the european subies. Overall the XV is a very fun and versatile car which is a winner in many ways! Thank you for the good videos!
That is interesting on the initial RPM situation, I didn't know about that one. And I agree on the silly part! And thank you very much for the kind words and for watching along. Much appreciated.
I'm glad you were able to get back to home base. Would suck to get stuck in the mountains 😳 try to behave yourself 😁
Hey Larry, I was just thinking about you and Your fast, as in speedy, wife the other day. How are you all doing? Thank you for the well wishes.
@@AZdroptop we are both fine and wife is worse back seat driver ever.😱 Her favorite phrase to me while driving is GO GO GO!!! I Fear my foot is not heavy enough😄👍
Ha ha ha. She's a keeper Larry. Glad you are both well!
The only thing I could think is that it was a issue from the factory and the sway bar bushing bolts where not properly torqued down from the factory. There is no way it was impact damage. If it was impact damage then either the bracket would be broken, or the bolt holes in the frame would have been damaged. Which brings me to a question, are you sure the hole were not damaged. I mean it sounds to me like you took it to the dealer, and they fixed it. A lot of times as a tech, especially if you where coming back and having all that other work done, I would just simply run new threads into the frame, and bolt the bushing back up. It is pretty easy job, and I would already be getting paid a hour for the diag, along with time to do all that other stuff, I would probably just fix it and not even tell you.
Thanks very much for your comment. I am leaning towards the bolts not being torqued correctly but I really am not certain. The tech who reinstalled the bushing didn’t mention any sheared bolts or damage to the frame and the bushing holes show no damage at all? They took me back to look at it before he reinstalled the bushing as well. I will follow up though for sure. I definitely do not want to blame Subaru for my mistakes, just want to find out what happened, Thank you again!
Hey Rick, So will you be coming out here to help with the fires? I hear that AZ is going to send fire crews out here. Be safe if you and your crew are coming!
Hi Don, Tucson Fire is not sending any crews out to California. Many years ago we did send out crews occasionally, but it has been a really long time. There are a few departments near by that will probably be sending some crews out though. Stay safe!!!
If they can male it under warranty because there is no damage to the bracket or anything the bolt went out due failure of torque it down
I am still hoping for that...
www.RalliTek.com is coming out with actual 1" lift springs for our cars if you haven't heard yet. 👍
Nice! Thank you for the information. Much appreciated.
Same sway bar bushing issues for my 18 crosstrek, and I didn't even take it off-roading.
Sorry to hear it. Did you end up seeing the fallow up video? Turns out there was a run of cars that didn’t have the correct torque on the sway at bolts. Looks like we were both winners on that one 😃
Rick Hutton thanks for sharing that! mine is at dealers now for repairing, don’t know whether it is under warranty yet. My wife really like this car, but we are both surprised and disappointed that some minor road condition on our daily commute could cause such an issue
It is a bummer for sure, but thankfully it was just a goof up at the factory. It only affected a small number of Crosstrek's, but looks like we were both winners. :) Best of luck with it from now on.
Alright man, I feel like you really know your stuff about Subaru’s so wanted to run this by you and get your take on it. We have an 18 crosstrek in Sunset Orange. Couple of things Ive found out after the fact of buying it. 1.) Subaru doesnt make the CVT for these cars, they outsource to a different company and the quality isn’t the greatest. 2.) A letter I got from Subaru last week that says the CVT warranty is now extended to 100k 10 yrs sort of reassures this for me lol. 3.) A friend of mine is a technician at my local Subaru dealer and says they change out the CVT’s a lot.
I haven't personally had an issue with my CVT on my 14 or my 18 as of yet anyway. :) I have heard of issues, but mostly of a slow speed shudder from some owners. It is nice to see that they extended the warranty like they did on the older Crosstrek's as well. I was not aware that they out sourced the CVT manufacturing..
Rick Hutton Thanks for responding. That is good to know. Yes, they outsource to a different company for their CVT. The manuals are allegedly bulletproof (and cheaper). I would have gotten one if I didn’t need to let my fam borrow the car now and then.
From what I am hearing the manuals are going away with Subaru...just a matter of time that there probably will not be one in the Crosstrek.
Rick Hutton Well they should start making regular Automatic tranmissions then. Im nervous this CVT isnt gonna make it long.
I hear ya...we shall all see how the make it over the years I guess. At least we have 10 years now.
Hey buddy, this sux! Did you think about getting the lift kit?
I've been thinking about it for awhile for sure. Only thing is a body lift would not have helped me in this one. Going to look around for suspension lifts or like HighjackSecondary mentioned a combo set up. How are things with you?
Ok, but what about your arm? do you know if it was due to an impact with the ground?
Things are fine here, it's got the up's and downs of starting a company! 😃
Hang in there! You will be successful if you keep up the hard work. The Trailing arm was definitely an impact and my guess is with a rock at some point. Once the parts come in I plan to sit down with the guys at Subaru and try to figure out what happened with that Sway bar bushing. If the impact caused that some how cool, if not, I want to know why the bolts came out. :)
Yeah if you had a lift kit the trailing arm might have been fine but then again, you would have passed over bigger rocks and get damage, it's the viscious cycle lol. Yeah that sway bar bushing is not normal, I haven't seen any issues abou the Crosstrek, hopefully it's a one of!
Thanks, I just signed my first major contract last night! :)
Awesome
Unrelated to this video, but I just got a 2019 Crosstrek Limited a few weeks ago. My Am/FM presest disappear after about 5 days. Set them again and 5 days later they are gone yet the XM presets remain. Anyone else have this issue?
Cameron, that is pretty interesting. Do you happen to have different driver profiles set up by chance?
Cameron Lakotich I did, but the most recent update solved that.
Lower tire preszure might help metigate those kinde of damage ?
Hey Serge Leduc, turns out the bolts were not torqued correctly from the factory...just found out about it from my buddy. I will have a detailed video up about it in the next few weeks.
@@AZdroptop awrsome Channel btw, i jave huge interest in the XT 2019 6MT
Thanks so much! Shoot me an email if I can help answer any questions you come up with....Happy to help. azdroptopyt@cox.net
Guaranteed those bolts were not torqued properly or were not tight when the bushing was installed at the factory.
Yes sir you are correct. Subaru finally did admit there was a factory problem that affected a run of cars. They even paid all of my costs that I payed out initiallyczcams.com/video/1OleT3jDbY8/video.html
And did you had the modify anything to do that
Nothing was modified suspension wise when this happened. It turned out to be a problem from the factory. Bolts were not torqued correctly.
Hey Rick just a FYI for you, I got a letter in the mail saying that they are extending the cars CVT warranty for 100000 miles or 10 years which ever comes first. Idk if you received any letter yet in the mail.
Thank you my friend. I received mine a couple of days ago as well. Cheers and have a good weekend.
Use blue locktite on all bolts to prevent this!
I would think they would have used it from the factory?? Seems so strange that the bolts came loose.
Shame Subaru makes most of those links out of cheap stamped steel and not solid
DrDennis77 that was exactly what i thought sir what a cheap construction..
I think what you're saying is where's the beef. With weight considerations being a priority for fuel economy, I think Subaru leans towards body structure. Passenger safety being the number one priority.
So is the jeep smoother than the crosstrek
It is more comfortable off road, but the Crosstrek is a bit better day to day and definitely on the freeway.
Wow. Last night, I had a dream I backed my XV into a parked car! Now that I think about it, this shouldn't happen in real life because mine has auto reverse braking.
LOL. Glad that was a dream. :)
Hey Rick did you get the extended 10year 100k mile transmission warranty in the mail yet....seems Subaru will be giving us that free of charge.
Just got it yesterday. Very nice of them to do so!
I haven’t heard what does that mean?
Crosstrek is awesome, i own one i can go almost anywhere but where this guy went is for 4x4 old beater truck 🤭
Not quite that bad 😊. Just a bit rocky in a few spots.
So, I guess it wasn't covered under Warranty ? lol
Not the Trialing arm :)
I would have to agree with you that it doesn't look like an impact caused the bracket to become undone...more so vibrations. Maybe as a precautionary move, I would definitely put a drop or two of thread lock on the ends of those sway bar and bushing bracket bolts/nut to make sure it doesn't back out again. Sorry to hear about this setback.
Thank you L T. I will report back once I really get to talk with the Tech and my other Subaru guys.
As an owner of a Crosstrek and a jeep who has taken both offroad, the damage is in my opinion from the fact that a Subaru is not really built to go offroad. The components are built light for fuel efficiency, and the car is fragile in comparison to a true offroad vehicle. Don't stop doing what you're doing, just know there will be consequences for taking your Subaru offroad, and finding the limits of your vehicle.
David, I agree. Appreciate your comment. I had a Rubicon for a few years and it was great off road, just hard to live with everyday. I can't do all the off roading I want to with the Subaru, but can still have fun! Thank you for watching!
Sounds like they were lose from factory and over time due to body vibration came undone.
I am leaning that way at this point. Once I get to really discuss it with the tech I will know more I hope. Cheers
Rick Hutton Let us know how it goes. My suspension has been creaky since I took ownership. Now at 9k miles my passenger back seat rattles. Too bad. Subarus in the past had great build quality. I still have my 2k outback.
Will do. Have you had the dealer look at for the creak yet? There is a comment from Kati above who had here sway bar come loose and her's was creaking as well. Best of luck!
Rick Hutton Took it in when I added new wheels and tires. I needed to reser sensor. They said it was a new car thing. Parts settling. I just read this article:www.reuters.com/article/us-subaru-results/subaru-to-slash-guidance-cut-output-after-finding-more-cheating-nikkei-idUSKCN1NA0FX?
Thank you for the link! And glad yours was an easy fix.
Just drive over that stuff!
Sway bar bushing?
Sway bar goes through it then attaches to the end link. Lots of video of it in the video.
You need some primitive under armour
I am actually leaning towards LPadventure skids since they attach to their front bar instead of the stock mounting points. On the list for sure! Cheers and thank you for watching.
Gad it wasn't as bad.as it could have been.
Some of the MtnRoo guys have replaced the sway bar links with custom links that can be easily detached when off roading. I'm sure with some digging you can find beefier links that will fit. Good luck
Thank you Miccal, Much appreciated.
"I have no idea how it could of rattled loose"
.....Really?
Apparently you are being accusatory like I did something wrong and caused the problem. Well your wrong. There is a follow up video in my playlist. Turns out it was discovered the bolts were not torqued correctly from the factory and it affected a limited number of Cars. Thanks to my local service manager for getting their local engineer involved who discovered the problem. They ended up paying for repairs.
Current lifts lift the suspension but also drop the rear subframe. Also rear alignment is not adjustable as far as I know.
Thank you for the info! I believe the LPadventure set up has a leveling kit that comes with it for the rear? Not 100% sure though. I really to to research all the option here soon.
Primitive racing under armour., Sorry post stroke 3months.
Sorry to hear that. Hope your recovery goes well.
Jeep?
Had a Rubicon a number of years ago...Great off road, but not great on road. The Crosstrek does everything pretty well and offload can go pretty much anywhere I want to go. Love Jeeps, just not everyday.
Thats alot of clunk.
I was indeed. Turned out improperly fastened bolts from the factory...Subaru covered the repair which was great.
@@AZdroptop thats the first time ive heard of improperly torque bolts from factory, any other factory will probably denied that.
It did take an amazing Service advisor to push the issue for me. The Subaru technical advisor came out and the found that a small run of cars had the same issue. Pretty crazy. After I posted my video I heard from around 10 people who had the same issue. My 18 had a number of recalls and issues, but Subaru took care of me.
Not a surprise a grocery getter designed for paved roads with a little snow on them falls short off road and breaks
Get a lift kit..
Ooo that is not good Rick poor subie :(
Naw, it's minor damage.
Thanks my friend.
Good stuff! Just tripped across your channel. Fellow Tucson dweller (done the Control Road several times in my Wrangler) and as of a few weeks ago fellow Subaru owner. See my video of my inaugural ride through the Gila: czcams.com/video/JNFB6p7t-GY/video.html
Maybe we can collaborate some time! I do mostly backpacking videos, but getting to/from the trailhead is an important component of safe backcountry adventures!
Hey Kurt, thanks for your comment and howdy! I will check out your Gila video and it would be a good time getting out and doing some filming together. I had a Rubicon years ago and wen to the Coke ovens on a day the Gila was flowing like crazy! Great trip. Probably a bit much for the Crosstrek, but we have so many options around here. Email azdroptopyt@cox.net
first
Is this just me or…if you hear these things why keep driving? I have a Crosstrek also and wouldn’t want to hurt my car like that. Again that’s me.
Either way I have a long way to go either back down the mountain or continue on. Turns out it was a factory blunder with subframe bolts that were not torqued correctly. Now a couple years later Subaru has a recall.
Crosstrek is not a wrangler.
Not sure what that has to do with my video of here, but you are correct. It isn't. The bolts on my sway bar were not torqued correctly from the factory and that is why they fell out.
Why not just drive on a road? The potholes will keep you active. Come on down to the city.
Ha ha. :) Not as fun.
Hi Rick. Could this whole thing be because you're driving a car? Most any sedan can do 95% of what a Subaru can do. Why not get something offroad worthy? What are you trying to prove? Subarus are not off road vehicles, they are just marketed that way. Please make a video of when your head gasket blows on your boxer.
@@friedicecream
Ok. At least I'm no fan boi... it's a car.
HI Brian, thank you for watching. Really not trying to prove anything, just out exploring, having fun and making videos. To be honest nearly all of the roads I have been on should be easy to do in any Subaru and the trailing arm damage happens. I have had a Jeep Rubicon in the past and it sucks to live with everyday. Granted, I can't do nearly the stuff off road in the Subaru that the Jeep could do, but the Subaru is better at everything else.
@@AZdroptop
Right. Just asking. A Rubicon is the best at one thing. I get it. Not for everyone. By all means, have fun... You may have more fun and less mechanical hassles in a light duty 4x4 with a frame that can check more of your luxury boxes. Marketing is strong, but theres no such thing as an offroad car. Offroad and onroad vehicles are different animals. Not a fan of boxer engines either, but that's my opinion. Don't get me started on CVTs. Peace.
All good brother. We all have our likes and dislikes that's what is so great about having choices! all the best.
It's a car if you want to wheel you need to get something appropriate. Or you car just keep fixing it . Suburu should not be covering this damage under warranty. Not defect in quality or workmanship.
I am not asking Subaru to cover any damage, totally agree with you there. I do wonder why and how the bolts came out of the sway bar bushing and for the life of me can not figure out why it came loose? I own the damage to the trailing arm.
