    You missed an ideal opportunity to pop some roast spuds on the coals I was thinking, lol. In the bush we would undo the lock tab and nut, undo the 6 bolts on the outer seal holder and use the axle flange as a slide hammer to bump the inner bearing off then assemble it all on the bench. I never used jacking bolts. Then with the outer bearing and seal assembly assembled just slide it in as a unit.

      G Day Lance, I might give that a go on the other one, just been up to the farm and balancing it on bricks to drain the oil (lesson no1) drain all liquids before splitting the tractor!
      cheers Lance

    Evening Barry well I had to check what I was watching I thought it was a bbq tips programme 😀. Oh yes I throughly enjoy reading each and every comment I learn things from them comments and it's nice to be able to occasionally offer bit
    Of advice or little tips but generally it's nice to see how other people over come issues. On personal experience I would suggest changing the drive shaft seal I didn't and ended up costing me a revisit but I know you will anyway I'm one of these that if you take things apart do what ever you can whilst your in there. Another cracking video I watched Shane's latest video I didn't realise our friend Lance has joined our David Brown group I'm sure we will learn alot from him collectively keep up the good work

      Hi Jon,
      what you didn't get to see was the sausages and burgers on the BBQ, Yes looking forward to having Lance onboard as you say it'll be good to get some proffessional advice and see how we're really supposed to do things.
      Shanes doing really well, his channel continues to grow strongly, it all helps to keep the DB's alive, can only be good,
      many thanks
      Barry

      Shane's doing really well like you he takes time to explain things having Lance do up a David Brown is an added bonus as he's got great experience and knowledge but don't underestimate how well you're doing you've taught alot of us how to go about tackling tasks,making tools etc

    Hi Barry, we finally dissembled my Selectamatic DB 880 right side final drive this morning. A fewer parts than yours like grease cup and It's brass cover. Bearings are ALL in very good shape (Timkene). We think that it only needs to be adjusted meaning removing some shims and thightning everything together. And most of all, we didn't have to heat up the brake drum. It came out pretty easy. Don't know if it's a good thing or not but it's out. We did exactly as you did on videos. We'll finally only replace seals and O rings. I would change the bearings but today's quality part is so cheap... Your video was greatly helping. Thanks ! Yours thoughts are always welcome.

      @@manfromthemist1958 Hey Barry. Seems like bearings only need to be tighten by putting more shims on pinion shaft and removing some on carrier. Timkene bearings are in a very good shape but I think I will replace them anyway. Let me know what you think. Regards.

    Hi Barry, I admire your tenacity getting the drums off like you did. The factory made tool to do this is a flanged tube that goes all the way down to the drum where you then fit two 1/2" bolts about 3" long to the drum. At the other end is a threaded draw bolt, probably about 1 1/8" or 1 1/4" with a very fine thread that pushes on the end of the axle. This tool will draw the drum off without any heat, however, it is still a considerable workout though. A better option would be a hydraulic cylinder in the tube to provide the force needed. P.S., I live in Hastings NZ right where the floods have devistated the area. The flood waters came within 500m of my property. I was lucky. Still enjoying your vids, keep em coming.

      Hi Shane, I think looking back if you know your going to dis-assemble the final drive I would drain the oil (days before)and remove the bull gear internals while on the tractor it's easier for control of a heavy casting.

    That's more or less how I got the brake drum off. Only difference after I destroyed the 1/2"x13 bolts, Drilled the holes out to 14mm then taped for M16. Big blow lamp gave plenty of heat. Used M16 screwed rod side to side and up it came. It goes back surprisingly easy after power wire brushing the shaft.Good vid. No power here this morning with the storm heading for you next.Power came back on `in the late afternoon. M😀

    Hiya Barry, great video mate, a bit of lateral thinking works wonders, as for that circlip have you given the cover plate a bump inwards to relieve a bit of pressure off it. So you are now using table cloths and hair driers, I hope Debs has started locking the kitchen up!!

      Hi Ken, Debs has got a full inventory of the kitchen and her cupboards, she checks everyday, I'm going to make a little tool over the weekend to get in behind the clip and try to force it out gently, cleaned it with a wire wheel today and the clip is pretty corroded so I'll have to be carefull with it.

    Another great video Barry. Interesting idea using the bbq to get the heat. When using heat to free parts is there any danger of getting things too hot and altering the properties of the steel? Rob

    • @manfromthemist1958
      @manfromthemist1958  Před rokem

      Hi Rob, yes you need to be aware of the amount of heat and where it 's going, and with castings you have to be carefull of uneven heat as this can cause failure in castings with tension and stresses, as we know cast is not good under tension.
      Many thanks

    Hi Again Barry,
    I was watching some random videos on CZcams and "dat" disassembling final drive came out as if someone knew that we talked it out like 2 days ago. I watched it carefully. I will probably need to ask you more further questions on how you do things but the very first one that came to my mind is : big gear bearings can be changed (sorry I feel stupid here) without popping out the brake drum ??? Sooooo, would you say that they can be (bearings) the ones mostly worn by tractor age ? I know it depends on how tractor maintenance was done over the years. I based my thoughts on the fact that those are supporting the rear tractor wheels and that they get all the shit the tractor is having when on traction either smooth or hard it is. I'll come back to you after the whole video. Thanks for answering. It's great that you're sharing all of this with us. I would like to know from witch part of GB you are please ? I'm originally speaking French. You speak English in a very easy way to be understand. A lot better than American people.

    • @manfromthemist1958
      @manfromthemist1958  Před 11 měsíci

      Hi Luc, I'm from Northumberland, apparently we, historically have a lot of germanic in our language and I believe that the UK spoke French (and local celtic)until the 14th century which is when we began changing to English.
      as for your bearings your absolutly correct the bearings on the final drive shaft and bull gear can be changed without removing the final drive casting from the tractor and also without touching the pinion shaft, by the same token you can also remove them and inspect them before going to the expense of replacement. Is there any play in your rear wheel, ie does it move up and down or side to side with the wheel off the ground this would indicate wear in the bearings or that you may have to remove shims from the seal carrier to reduce play.
      Marty T has a good video showing this opperation czcams.com/video/bE2284DZiPc/video.html
      nip over there and watch him.
      As for wear, these bearings are slow rotating bearings by comparision to the pinion bearing, however this doesn't necessarily mean one would wear before the other, It's agood starting piont, and there has to be step one somewhere.
      lets know how you get on
      many thinks

      @@manfromthemist1958 Hi Barry. Thanks sooo much for answering. My mom's name is Horth. My dad's name (mine) is Gagnon. Gagnon is a "french" name. It least it's suppose to. But we never know until we discover that it comes from another area like England, Germany or what else. Horth is originally German (yavol). I'm recently discovering and learning German words and sentences. I know it has same roots as English. It's a bit similar in a way but soooo different at the end in the same time. I want to go to Germany for my 60th birthday. It's in a year and a half. I want to reconnect with my origins. Seeing you starting that 990 engine yesterday night on another video helps me learned that it's engine is 4 cylinders. I really thought it was a 3 cylinder like the 880. Course the 990 has a way better engine than 880. The fuel pump is more sophisticated. And the sound... I really like the 990 engine sound. Do you know if it was a David Brown engine ? I'm asking because I herd the same sound out of a 1974 John Deere 1830 like 40 years ago. But the 880 as a particular sound I like better. About the rear bearings, I know that there is not a lot of play in both of my DB's rear wheels. It's more about the noise. I know it can be reduce and if changing bearings can help, I will do it. Bearings can be tricky. They can look good, the cups too but they're finally making noise. I'll see. My concern is about the shims. Needs to be done properly when reassembling. I'll see. But I can't thank you enough sharing the video of fixing it with us. Priceless...
