I talked to John for a bit today. Here's some updates: Hold down shift and use the mouse to fine tune the plugin knobs (similar to CTRL on like a REAPER fader). Reset a knob to default by using CTRL/CMD click. He is also fixing the bug in the LA-2A plugin so that will be resolved.

I've never used it myself, but there's a VST-wrapper for JSFX-code called ReaJS. This means you can run ReaJS plugins in any VST-compatible host (there may be fringe exceptions)

@@EasyHeat Man, you got into the baby making game late. You walking with a cane, dad?
Bet you wish you got started earlier! I sure do, as a music making/playing dad. I've got a wasted decade in there. I mean, a lot of great memories from that time, a lot of life lessons learned, that lost decade made me who I am today, so can't fully regret it, but damn, if I knew how GOOD making and raising babies was, I woulda started a decade earlier, and had 5 more kids!
But now, it's my kid's first year in college... we're empty nesters now. Like, me, I'm an empty nester.... WTF!
My heart aches like I can't describe. Remember breaking up with your first love, how devastating that was? This is 100x worse. 1000x... it's incomparable.
So proud of my kid. They've so far avoided most of my profound mistakes, so my suffering is finally paying dividends.
On the plus side of empty nesting, you can finally start eating things you like, the way you like, again. Like, "hello mushroom!" And you can have just a salad for dinner, or no dinner at all.
A lot more time for musical activities.
You can engage in proper love at proper volume levels again, if your business even works anymore...
But these are insignificant concessions, for me at least, to the greatest loss of my life.
So, a little dad advice, from one dad to another, CHERISH the time you have with your kid, because, as I'm sure you're becoming aware, time is not linear, it passes exponentially, and that 8 yo you love will soon be gone for ever... they'll be a 9 y.o., then a 16 yo, then actually gone. Oh, and the early teenage years are the worst, btw, going through puberty for the second time in your life... who knew it would come back around and get you a second time...like once is enough!
But, seriously, your nest will be empty before you know it, and everything you lived for will be gone, off making their way into adulthood, and self-sufficiency. It is excruciating. I'm just letting you know now. Seize every day, they are fleeting.

Thanks for demonstrating some of the Tukan (ding) Studios plugins! Very informative!
I think it's amazing that everyone can get these great looking plugins for no charge at all. At the same time I conclude, that these plugins doesn't behave as expected compared to other emulations. In the end you can get similar results but with different apporaches. Tukan (ding) can get you where you want in a nice looking and fun way! I did notice, that in the dynamics area the "hard-coded" ones sounds a little bit more smooth. I don't know if the Jesuonic platform, which is an interpreted "language", might be limited by DSP processing speed..?

    • @HiYouTubeImDad
      @HiYouTubeImDad  Před 2 lety +1

Yeah, it's a Razer Basilisk v2 that I got off of Amazon. It has 2 buttons below the scroll wheel to move up and down through various speeds (you can customize the various speed levels) and there's a clutch button that when pressed down moves to the lowest speed level. It's very nice, but it is a wired mouse. Since I'm at a desktop I don't have issues with it, it's nice to not have to worry about batteries.

Tukan plugins are third party. The REAPER devs opened up APIs and programming interfaces so that third party plugin devs can write their own. There are thousands of third party plugins that work withing the JS language for REAPER.

@@HiCZcamsImDad Yeah, I am aware of that and what I'm saying is that Cockos need to cut John a check and make his plugins first-party and included with Reaper by default. They are too good to not get such treatment imo. I've replaced half of the plugins in my day-to-day workflow with Tukan plugins!

@@skratchtat Yeah it seems like the Pultec doesn't really emulate how the rest of the plugins out there do it. Now that said, it's possible that he emulated it off of a specific piece of hardware (maybe a Pultec clone instead of the real one?) Not sure exactly.

I know that everything Reaper is sometimes tending to be a little cult-like... but these Tukan hype is going to far. All his plugs sound in s way anemic. And they are hyping the output. You have to level match them. For the pultec... The Analog Obsession uses way too much CPU, the Tukan sounds brittly and shitty, the one closest to an original and with the least CPU usage and without the need of level matching is the old Softie Pultec emulation.
Tukans plugs are not really there. Not even close.

Interesting but I don't think that the exact settings is a "fair" way of comparing to different Plugins. Unless they are made the same if they are built differently then the travel of the knobs are going to be different etc internal design we're talking about the original being made years ago. I used this compressor and wow it is extremely musical which is odd to say, but it just brought out sounds from the track I used it on it was great. Don't care about the original in that sense, ( if I had one then fine) I care how this one sounds.

  • @GVDue

Thank you so much for this review - I only recently found those plugins and what I really appreciate about them - apart from their sound quality - is that they are lightweight and "for free" (I would love to donate some money but would prefer a one-off payment) - which allows me to use them in shared projects (in my case home and studio). With the increasing numbers of home studios etc., collaborative scenarios become more and more common - I gave this problem some thoughts and found that with daw projects (with rather large data volumes, plugin issues etc.) it is actually not quite that simple (especially when not only effects but also vst-instruments come into play) - which is why I gave this problem some more thoughts and came up with MuCol (standing for MusiCollaboration, a system based on some Reaper-scripts) which allows you to generate instrument specific subprojects from a main project and automates the exchange of recordings and backtracks - more details on www.mucol.ch if anybody is interested.
