I think one of the reasons that Windgassen was so brilliant on the Solti recording was because he had stage experience in singing this very difficult role. His agent tried to get him more money in the recording, but he refused. He had a superlative heldentenor. I wish I could’ve seen one of his live performances.
The best Siegfried - and every Wagnerian tenor role - all in all, because he never tried to show off, he sang his part but didn't just play the character... he BECAME the character.
I was looking for a different video that I am in (my last name is Windgassen as well) and I just discovered Wolfgang Windgassen.......wow.....Wolfgang Windgassen was quite a performer. I wonder if I am related somehow to Wolfgang ?
Remember the scene in the movie “Walk Hard”, where he wanted to make his lifetime masterpiece? “IT NEEDS MORE ABORIGINAL WOODWINDS!!” That’s what the Ring Cycle was with Wagner. Except since he was a once in a thousand year ultra-genius, he somehow made it work.
Now, if you combined Windgassen’s voice with Slab Man Thrust, sorry, I meant Beef Pound Muff, sorry, I meant Bicep Punch Hard, sorry, Jay Hunter Morris, then you would have the perfect Siegfried.
bitte etwas mehr RESPEKT, WOLFGANG WINDGASSEN WAR EIN GROSSARTIGER SAENGER UND DARSTELLER, EINMALIG. ABER ES GAB DURCHAUS ANDERE GROSSARTIGE WAGNER-TENOERE. peter alsbergs
The best voice, perhaps - Lorenz's was as good as Melchior's in my view - but the Great Dane sang at full power only when he thought he could glow and show off ( "The forging song, for instance, but never when arguing with Mime )

Wolfgang Windgassen, bis heute ein einzigartiger Tenor, dem niemand das Wasser reichen kann.
Doch; Lauritz Melchior ist stimmtechnisch mindestens eine Stufe höher zu sehen.

A top Siegfried and a true heldentenor!!
Of course: It`s Windgassen.💫RIP

The best performance of the best Siegfried!!
That is a wonderful performance!

Is this your way of discovering Classical music?

15:00 I love the ending!
The more I listen to Windgassen, the better I like him!!
Windgassen einfach großartig. Wie armselig die heutigen Bayreuth-Sänger!

Великолепно!
I wonder how the music was even written for the violins around the 4:40 mark. “Just make flourishy noises”?

Who is our Mime?

Yes, in addition to Windgassen there were "other" terrific wagnerian tenors ( Lorenz, Völker, Suthaus, Svanholm, Treptow... ), so?
I think that Melchior was the best but this is very powerful.
