That muted horn in the background ties in with the soldier returning half her weight lyric. It makes me think of a service members funeral. Very dramatic but in the most relatable way. The lyric about her dad saying its supposed to be fun turning 21 is an incredible lyric because he didnt show up to her 21st birthday party. Your 21st is supposed to be an amazing and fun memory but he ruined it for her and that's something she can never get back. You get one life, you get one 21st birthday and now everytime she thinks of it for the rest of her life, shes going to remember the moment she got her heart broken for the first time because it was the moment she knew he didn't feel for her the way she did for him. And thats another song yall should check out: The Moment I Knew, it's solely about her 21st party. Talk about cinematic, it's a fantastic song that places you in that house for the party watching her slowly realize he wasn't going to show up!
This was a great reaction!! Excellent breakdown of the song. The song was in the vault because it was 10 minutes long. The version they released with the album had to be cut down to 4 minutes. Once she decided to re-record the album and she controlled her music she wanted it released like she wrote it.

The line about turning 21 is about how she waited for him all night to show up at her birthday party, but he didn't. He promised he would, but he broke that promise ('you call me up again just to break me like a promise').
I always interpreted the 'you kept me like a secret, but I kept you like an oath' in the way that a secret is something unsure, you either keep it or you don't, but an oath is something you keep for life. Basically, for him that relationship was just another fling, but for her it was everything because it was her first real love. She fell hard for him. At least that's how I interpret it.

To me its like "youre denying our relationship existed basically, to the whole world, acting like it was a minor fling, but can you even just admit to ME that you remember our connection the way I do?" And then the second part of the quote below is Jake Gyllenhaal to Esquire, when the re-release came out and Swifties started coming for him online. He couldn't handle the heat and had to flip the narrative and vicitimize himself, blaming her as an artist for fueling cyberbullying by what she releases out into the world in her music. Just an all-round punk, basically 😂
