  • Holy cow this must have been the lengthiest, pain-in-the-ass'iest DK I've ever repaired. But alas.. I was victorious in the end.
    Enjoy!
(p.s. Some outtakes at the end)

I simply enjoy the in depth troubleshooting you do. Simply amazing.
You can explain the most complicated things in the most simple way. That just shows how in depth understanding and knowledge you have. You and RetroGameModz.

Hey can you tell me there is two white wires coming off the circuit board where does it go on the power supply

I can't believe that the type of socket made all the difference. That was the first time I heard about it. Is there some kind of general rule you could derive from this, which kinds of sockets to use under certain kind of circumstances?

Hey man thanks for fixing my Donkey Kong. Sorry that it was such a pain. I saw something interesting in that video. That DK Jr I sent was totally jacked but it worked for you. Hahaha.

What are those needle looking things called (6:49). I have bought my first logic probe and I guess I need a pair to connect to the legs of the chips...

Awesome video.. Keep making them!! One question - Once you determined that the binary counter signal was getting induced onto the 5v, I was absolutely convinced that the problem was the the pull-up resistor had gone bad and was open or higher resistance, rather than providing enough pull up current.. Even a bad solder joint on that resistor could have caused that symptom, right? Is it possible that you at least partially re-flowed that resistor and that's what solved the problem? Is there something flawed with my logic? I would expect that if there was something fundamentally wrong with running those signals across that 5v buss, that this would be a VERY common DK problem..
Thanks again - As a proud owner of a MsPac and Galaga, I enjoy working on them almost as much as playing them! ;-)

Steve Jones That resistor was my first thought. If those input lines begin to float a bit then it may cause the outputs to stutter. But then again, the 5V power going into that resistor could be getting lower over time causing the problem. It could be a bad cap or chip in that area that begins to short or draw excessive amounts of power when it heats up enough but only thermal probing or thermal camera would show you that for sure. Could add a 100uF cap over the chips 5V and ground rails and run a 5v and ground line to it directly from the power supply to keep the voltage droop in that area minimal for testing. That could probably cause the problem cap or chip to blow out giving you a definite answer to where and what it is.

From the pattern duplication you could tell the counter was shorting with the 5v. Good stuff man. Do you only do Nintendo boards? I've got a Midway Jamma that I'd like to add to the waiting list!

Yeah sorry man... I only work on Nintendo boards these days

I understand. These things can be so complex so I don't blame you for sticking to what you know best. Plus I hear Midway/Williams boards are the worst! Maybe you can make a video of how to test components like capacitors and such?

Haha been there. Still have one of my DKJR with sprites problem.
Having a good board to compare is always a plus, but I didn't find time to isolate the exact cause. its a pain.
