"Vinland Saga" is a Viking themed song with lyrics we adapted from a song found in Robert Michael Ballantyne's book, "The Norsemen in the West”, written in 1872. We hope you enjoy it:)
We composed and arranged the piece. My family sang it.
Please no bad language in the comments. We want this to be family friendly:) Thank you!
Lyrics:
Vinland Saga
Western Waves Were All Unknown
Where western waves were all unknown
And western fields unsown,
When Iceland was the outmost bound
That Viking keels had found,
Where Western Waves Were All Unknown
(All Unknown)
Gunbiorn then Ulf Kraka's son
Was forced west to run
By furious gales, and there saw land
Stretching on either hand.
Eric, of Iceland, called the Red,
Heard of the news and said,
This western land I'll go and see ;
Three summers hence look out
Look out for me.'
Vestur
Vestur
‘A wondrous land is this’ said he
And called it Greenland of the Sea.
Then searched the coast both far and wide,
Then back to Iceland o’er the tide.
Twenty-and-five great ships sailed west
To claim this gem on ocean's breast ;
With man and woman, horn and hoof,
And begging for the homestead roof,
Some turned back in heart but mice
Some sank amid the northern ice ;
Half reached land in much distress,
At Ericsford and Herulfness.
Then Leif the son of Eric rose
And straightway to Biarne goes,
Buys up his ship, takes all his men,
Fares forth to seek that land again.
Vestur
Where western waves were all unknown
Vestur
Kven skal synge meg?
(Who will sing of me?)
Leif found the land, discovered more,
And spent a winter on the shore,
Named ' Hella-land ' and ' Mark-land ' too,
And saw an island sweet with dew !
And grapes with great abundance found,
So named it Vinland all around,
But after that forsook the shore
And north again for Greenland bore.
And now we cross the moonlit seas
To search this land of grapes and trees ;
With men and cattle not a few,
And household gear and weapons too :
And, best of all, with women dear
To comfort, counsel, check, and cheer.
Thus far we've made a prosperous way,
God speed us onward every day!

Was this planned to release right as the National Museum of Norway puts away the painting «Leiv Eiriksson oppdager Amerika» (Leiv Son of Eric Discovers America) (Christian Krohg, 1893), or is it just a coincidence?
Beautiful
Finally @ClamaviDeProfundis something good, not deceptive lol
Congratulations, you've summoned a horde of weeaboos
I love it. It is so inspiring. Check a book series called Visigothic. It is full of such stories
First Vinland Saga season two starts airing and now we get this song!?
It’s never been better to be a fan of Vikings!!
is vinland saga good?
@@lunialation666 like most things, it depends on what your definition of “good” is. I personally have a lot of fun with the show and really enjoy it. It’s got incredible and insane action, plus the characters are interesting and fun.
But it’s definitely not for everyone. It’s in this weird middle zone where it’s both surprisingly realistic and absolutely bonkers. You have a lot of historically accurate weapons and armor. You have the brutal reality of what BOTH sides committed during this time. They even have call outs to actual significant events. Then you have a guy chucking huge logs like a canon at oncoming ships. I personally love it and find it really fun, but I understand that it might put some people off.
On top of that it is a very violent show. If killing and gore isn’t your thing this won’t be the show for you. And the story is a bit odd. The protagonist’s personal journey is a really simple one that doesn’t really do much for the overall narrative. He’s just kind of around while the historical characters do their thing. (At least in the first season, not fully caught up with the current season yet)
So if all this sounds good to you then you’ll love the show! But if you’re not one for extreme violence or if you want the main character to have more agency then it might not be your thing. But if you want epic Viking stuff I highly recommend it!
@@Maribro4 i have started watching it and sad that amazon prime video only has first season, where can i get the rest?
@@lunialation666 both Netflix and Crunchyroll are releasing the new episodes for season 2 as it airs
@@lunialation666 don't wanna butt in, but as a huge fan of Vinland Saga I had to speak up
for season 2 content, you can either go to crunchyroll or find some free anime site (technically piracy but eh)
Now, season 1 is certainly filled to the brim with violence and more focus is given to the side characters instead of the protagonist, but this setup is meant to give the second season some solid weight, which is focused nearly wholly on the main character this time. It's no exaggeration when we say that this arc, dedicated to developing the protagonist, is simply one of the masterpieces in manga/anime writing of all time. As a man engrossed in cruelty and violence for the first season and being practically just a war machine, Thorfinn gets a chance to reflect deeply on his actions and life so far, and figure out what kind of life it is he should be leading. This is the nadir of his journey, and when he comes up from it he is refined into an amazingly written character embodying heartfelt anti-war ideals with a new mission in life that ties into the story's title and references the historical Thorfinn Karlsefni's expedition to Vinland. It'll look a lot like a meandering story set on a farm and nothing else at first, but I hope you'll stick with it!
The greatest tragedy of the modern world is the inaccessibility of the unknown. Men crave real adventure, bring trial and hardship so long as the sweetest wine of true accomplishment is there. Ordeal most bitter is easy to swallow when you know that what you are doing matters.
We live in a world where that which matters is beyond the reach of almost everyone, and this is why, despite being more comfortable than any human beings that ever lived before, most people are miserable.
We don't want to be comfortable. We don't want to be safe. We want to be free.
Now sing a song about how Thornfin fought a guy who could punch a horse for the right to kill they guy who killed his dad.
I love this statement, its so utterly batshit without context and absolutely hilarious with context.
@@notubutme3048 I don’t know the context and it sure is.
@@husky0098 Check out the manga Vinland saga. Probably one of the best there is. I highly recommend it
Did horses used to have an anti-punching forcefield that the guy could somehow bypass, or...?
Truly a heart moving tale this describes
From Norway with love. Thank you for this dedication in honor of Scandinavia's great heroes of old.
That Helvegen reference did not go unnoticed. :) Nicely put.
From "Vinland" here, still have no clue what they were seeing that they thought were grapes.
These songs always makes me want to hop aboard a longship and sail into the sunset.
#This
I loved it.
May your cloak be warm and your journey over the Sundering Seas swift!
This is true music that we must listen to
I was not expecting to hear Wardrunas "Helvegen" in the middle of this song, I am truly moved. Thank you
What i love about his song is it's like a history/mythology lesson and great music lessons all rolled into one
the Norse Sagas are one of my favourites of all time
@ClamaviDeProfundis continue your craft proudly cant wait for the next song!
A new song about Norse seafarers and explorers. I love it!
Veee-stur! Such a perfect harmony! I will never forget this! One word is at once consolation and invitation to adventure!
Ve-stur!
I love Age of Empires II, vikingers & Vendel age. Thanks 🙏
Ahh i work about something of Vinland Saga! Thank you sir for this story;)
Thank you, my friends! Thank you for this release on Fat Tuesday! One last hurrah before repentence.
The Helvegen reference literally stopped me in my tracks
Same here, my wife and I had to listen to it about five times. Perfectly executed and a great surprise!
Great as always :)
Just in time for Vinland Saga season 2. Thank you!
People who love history from future generations will find and live these songs. Keep up the great work!
Just wanna say: I really enjoy listening to this!
Oh, love this! (Where I come from people went east during this era, to Miklagård)
Unexpected I most say, both time and subject but great work.
Will be enjoyed many a time.
Amazing Norse song! Would be awesome if you guys keep making more norse song covers/versions, like for the songs "Håkon den Gode" and "Ved Stanford Brua".
Beautiful, I love it. I am looking for new songs for our men's choir
Had heavy flashbacks to my teen years when I was interested in Scandinavian lore and read Edda :D
Please do Fingolfin vs Morgoth in the future 😃
Blind Guardian has a song about that called 'Time Stands Still (At the Iron Hill)'. It's a very different genre to Clamavi De Profundis, but still excellent music.
Brings out my Irish/Celtic blood. Thank you
Brilliant, another great story told by you guys.
Thank you. You give us in our days more perfection and epicness.
I read the saga last month😁😁😁😁😁 so happy theres a song good job🤩
the age of empires vive is really enjoyable guys thanks for this song
What a nice song.

A very good manga. 😎👏
amazing, ive been waiting to hear something good as this for a while
Hey new song how fun thx clamavi
Made my day
LOVE IT!!
Absolutely amazing work.
Wonderfully done! Thank you for your videos.
First. Glad to see you’re still going hard with your own renditions.
Back at it once more! A song of craftmanship that you lads can only create!
It's always a joy to hear your latest song. Having long been in awe of the Old Norse, this one is especially delightful to listen to.
BEAUTIFUL AS PER
This goes well with Vinland Saga the anime! Though I hope we get some actual Vinland at some point soon!
So epic. Love it
Epic!
Jag älskar dena låten på miner mig om berättelserna när jag var uyngre.
☮️
Ok ... This was unexpected and thank you❤
I heard that Helvegen riff ;)
😀 fantastic
Very inspiring. Skol!
2:40 "Who shall sing me"? This isn't Old Norse though, it's modern Norwegian. If you wanted Old Norse, that would be something like 'Hver Skal synge min'
2:49 This should be 'hellu land', 'hellu' from 'hall' as in 'rock, flat stone', see also Hallbjorn, 'Stone Bear'. Hella-Land would be 'Death Land' in this sort of context.
빈란드 사가를 다룬 노래라니 좋군요 잘 듣고 갑니다
❤
very good
Fun!
Coming from a land of Viking ancestry this warms my heart
Proud vinlander
Gonna play this while my brytenwalda playthrough
You have really greatly evolved in my opinion through the years, I don't know if you see it that way, but anyways very great song!
Another great song. I’m already addicted. One small tip though, maybe consider putting an accent in ‘forcèd’ like so to indicate that it’s supposed to be pronounced with two syllables.
For some reason I thought this was about the anime
❤❤
"I am the Vine, you are the branches," with the visible reminder of the Cross in the final moments of the video - on this, the Feast of the Most Holy Face of Jesus & going into this Lent of Lents, I thank you for more of your amazing Viking lore, legend & history. May your fruitful melodic branches continue to nourish the hungry creatures who come near for refreshment! Thank you for your faithfulness abounding in your music! Please carry on, seeking a great harvest!
This Implies that 12.5 ships made it
That is correct, I dragged half a ship to shore.
Excellent work! Would y'all do a copy of Adoro Te Devote?
Pls makd a extended version of son of the mountain
Music aside, beautiful as it is (it will be hard waiting for the end of Negankerdak saga), how come no one mentions how nice the art is? The style fits well, and ever since Strong it has been impressive to watch as it just gets better and better.
Ok...😍😍😍
Watch the anime same title is really good.
Now we need a cover of God of War's "Lullaby of the Giants" and "Stone Mason".
Ah, yes, sometimes a few people just get bitten by the travel bug or get born with an urge for adventure in their blood. Those are our greatest explorers, adventurers, discoverers and survivalists. There be dragons and we are in the business of slaying them where ever they may be found. That is just part of our human curiosity after all. And as it happened on Earth it shall continue to drive us ever forward, to the stars in the night sky and beyond. We will go as far as we can, just to see everything we possibly can, simply to know what all there really is, no other reason required. We can, therefore we will.
What medium did you use for the art? It looks really nice
Rest in peace you crazy ancestors Hot Wheels for us😊😞🙏
Then they made friends with the natives for a brief time, until in innocent ignorance shared their goat milk with the unwittingly lactose intolerant tribesman, who mistakenly assumed that they had been poisoned, and it was all downhill from there…
Imagine Thanksgiving if that friendship had worked out... Pilgrims and Christian Norse-Wampanoag Native Americans.
👍
“Oh look dear, CDP released another banger!”
I've got a conlang (constructed language) based on a crossover between Old Norse and Innu-Aimun, the language of the people who live in what the Vikings called Markland. Listening to this song instantly made me want to translate the lyrics, so here we go:
Ve'st'at uþa't a'bu al's Vi'tutætnata'st e'
Western waves were not at all Often thought of, ever.
Øq ve'sttat uþa't vit-'a'sit A'bu ve'sþrur akum til
And western waves, consider Not western fields til
Tcedgisǫ'na'gehntǫqe'ni
They have been sown.
This is all I've got time for at the moment. I'm trying to accurately translate it while sticking with the tune and using Old-Norse style alliteration poetry. I'm not sure if I can keep it up all the way through, but I'll do some more when I have time.
Very cool. Does your conlang have a name and did you post more of it anywhere else?
@@husky0098
It's called Vi'nlandisk Aimun (Vinlandic Speech). I've posted some things on the subreddit r/conlangs, but not for quite a while. I also have a reading of a short poem in an older version of the conlang on this youtube channel together with some stick figure art that I drew.
A shame there was no way to mention the child of Erik the Red who took most after dear old dad, Freydis.
Freydis is a villain in the Groenlendinga Saga
@@kolsveinnskraevolding Oh I'm aware. But that's partly why I mentioned Freydis taking after her father. Erik never shyed away from settling something with a sword, nor from simply taking a thing if he wanted badly enough.
More Norse content please
Shöl my Viking brothers
SKOLL
Tu autem, Domine, pius et misericors Deus. Semper patiens, semper pius et fidelis. Convertere ad me et miserere mei conforta me et libera me Quia sicut mater mea tibi servio.

finally Bjorn or is it Bjornson and his party make landfall after spending many moons on the whale road
Just can't imagine what would have happened if the usa became the Scandinavian states of the west... Ssw
2:27 Helvegen reference?
Helvegen - Wardruna
SKAL!
Is it in anyway related to the anime?
Nope. Look into description. It's explained there.
Only in that both the anime and this song were inspired by the Icelandic saga that speaks of the family that sailed west and discovered Greenland and then America.
@@arcotroll8530 Thanks! 😃
2:27 - Small correction on the translation of the Norwegian line given in the description: It literally means "Who shall sing me" not "Who shall sing of me".
I assume it's taken from Helvegen, where it's one line but the whole verse is one long sentence, where it makes more sense. In that sentence it's used in the same way you might say "sing me to sleep" (indeed, the question in the song is essentially, to paraphrase; who shall sing me to death-sleep when I walk the path to Hel).
