Hi VK3FUR, thanks for the nice and interesting video! I am the author of tncattach :) Absolutely crazy coincidence, I've stood in that exact spot at looking out over Melbourne quite some years ago. Wouldn't have guessed at that point I'd write a program that allowed someone to download a fox to Wurundjeri Lookout over packet radio more than a decade later.
Wurundjeri Lookout is my favourite for VHF/UHF because of the radio horizon reaching across Melbourne and being so close by. I usually do HF things Bellbird park as it's usually fairly quite (both from people and RF noise :P).
Thanks for tncattach it's been super fun to play with and easy to use for experimenting. It was great fun using it over HF with the freedv modem!

Great video. As you maay know, in the US, the FCC does not allow encrypted packet so saying TCP/IP over radio is in fact accurate and you correctly pointed that out. Thanks.
I bought a book on TCPIP over radio many years ago. I knew nothing. This book enabled me to get a dual band gateway running on JNOS . Days of a 286 . So I had 9k6 baud on UHF and 1200 baud VHF. It worked well. Learnt about bit masking and all cmds at the prompt, no fancy GUI. Simple syntax CMds did everything to addressing rs232 ports. Had no help. I got there. That book was by Ian wade I believe. Still have it somewhere. Thanks for your inspiration to get me interested again at age 76 now.

Hope this inspires some other VK3's into playing with packet. Other APRS can't seem to find any packet here in Melbourne. I even have a 1270c modem ready to rock!!.

I was on packet radio many years ago, when it was about as fast the dial up modems many people had. Unfortunately, speeds haven't kept up, at least not on 2M. Perhaps more needs to be done on bands that support much greater bandwidth than what's allowed on 2M. These days, with 5G, a few hundred Mb can be had on common cell phones. If I were to do something like this today, I'd be tempted to use PPP over the radio link, instead of bothering with AX.25, which is based on an ancient protocol. One of the attributes of X.25, which it's based on, was it was a virtual circuit, instead of a hop by hop connection through routers. On the other hand, PPP is an actual IP transport that can be used with a variety of devices and would be used only as far as the Internet connection.

Did you tried on 9k6 bauds? Many radios come with a connector for this speed. And can decode DV also. I played a lot with that.

I remember ip addressing on amateur radio, one of the more famous routes being ip bbc, so how come they say this is a new thing when l was doing it in the eighties and nineties, ?
Is it the radio speed that limits the packet speed or regulatory agencies ie the FCC, OFCOMM etc.?
The view from that lookout point is breathtaking! Does that area qualify for a POTA activation? Very interesting info. I remember playing a bit with Packet back in the late 80’s, an interesting system at the time with mailboxes for messages and being able to set up a link between the Midwest and California. Took around ten minutes to send a simple message.
FCC and OFCOMM might have limitations (I only know ACMA sorry), but the biggest problem is radios only have a limited amount of RF bandwidth available.
No POTA for that lookout afaik.
Thank you for sharing and we are looking for AX25 to do chatting across the network with its limitations. Your higher speed TNC i think has a different modulation with maybe more the 1 bit per symbol. Can you say more about it.
This video was specifically using the 1200 baud modem provided by direwolf which is the Bell 202 AFSK modem, however direwolf supports 9600 (G3RUH modem) and 300 baud (Bell 103 modem) modulation types.
