Don Bartolo's big aria is sung after Rosina tries to deceive Bartolo by telling him many different lies, he declares that a doctor of his kind should not be treated as such and orders her locked in her room. In the case of Rossini it is an especially elaborate aria written in the sonata form, possibly to relate the high status of doctor in society during the 18th century with the complexity of musical form. Actually, not one character in the opera has such a complex piece (Rosina and Almaviva get classical successions of cantabile - cabaletta, Basilio's aria is completely given to a crescendo effect, while even Figaro's complex aria is simpler compared to the present one): first, a stately melody as Bartolo reminds Rosina of her and his place in society - then the an unusually sweet and laughing central theme that returns several times throughout the aria - a particularly reflective section as Bartolo lists Rosina's lies which is then broken with a contrasting explosive section as the doctor gives way to his anger - main theme - a gentle andante as the doctor advices the girl to stop either lying and being glum - the brilliant double patter section as Bartolo sets up his plan for Rosina - another return to the main theme with a coda to end the aria. All in all, a most complex and entertaining aria for the elderly doctor.
Andrew Shore, a justly well-known buffo, plays effectively with the complexity of the aria :).
