I'm sorry, no version past or present (especially modern interpretations) can hold a candle to the talent and intensity of this version! Thank you for sharing this clip!!!
Every Christmas they would play this version of the Nutcracker. To this day there is no other version that I like. Even as an adult I can still visualize the dance steps when I hear the Nutcracker. Every other choreography seems "weird" to me.
I love aryshnikov, but you really should see Miyako Yoshida with the Royal Ballet. czcams.com/video/83-ii3fzkEA/video.html She's Perfect. Takes my breath away everytime. And It's call The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy-They choreographed this to showcase Baryshnikov. Which is fine- this is a really good performance.Check out Miyako1
Really? That is so awesome! Watching her now. Every dancer including your mom gave me such lovely enchanted dreams of beauty every Christmas because of their wonderful dancing in this production. Nothing else compares!
@gemerald88 Seriously? Wow, she's gorgeous! She did a fabulous job - and holy cow, that's a heck of a lot of echappes in a row. Those things are brutal, even at the barre.
I love this version of the nutcracker but could someone help me out, the Arabian dance is missing? Was it just cut from the televised production or was it not part of this at all? I’ve been looking for it.
Not quite the same without Mother Ginger or the Arabian Dance. The Polichinelles on their own are fine but it sort of misses the 'wow' factor that Mother Ginger brings visually.
I hate to burst everyone’s bubble ,but the young girl Clara later wrote and reported in an interview (I saw it) that Barishnikov took advantage of her during the filming of this ballet .

I wish there was a DVD of this in European format!
My favorite part starts at 5:10. It is still cute after so many years.

Tchaikovsky wrote "The Nutcracker" over 130 years ago. I wonder if the youth of today ever even herd of it?
the jesters/clowns are such an improvement over the giant skirt filled with children (dont remember the name of the "mother")
George de la Peña, who interpreted Nijinsky in the movie, performing the Russian dance!

Does anyone know who is the dancer on the right at the last song?
