But , loosing stuff can be prevented easily and relatively inexpensive. Most likely , in the Balkans , you will not find everything you need for that in a shopping mall , but rather in a well equipped hardware stores and stores that sell construction materials (while in Skopje - use the fact that it is a capital and biggest city in Macedonia - therefore , lots of stores). If I were you , I would buy a bunch of hose clamps (jubilee types , that can be tightened with screwdriver) which you can find in auto parts stores , along with some bungee cords (sometimes sold at bigger gas stations , along highways , or major roads). Than , small carabiner s and closed loop hocks (small ones) at hardware store (use hose clamps to secure carabiner to back bicycle fork , or , instead of carabiner , you can use strong key rings ). For securing stuff around and over panniers , you can use any kind of webbing or net (for construction purposes , or for shading crops - so that kind of store) with bungee cords and if you want solid surfaces - also construction materials store , or DIY store (plastic sheeting (not acrylic - it is brittle) - they can , usually , cut it for you , if you provide them with dimensions (metric , of course , so you might have to buy , or lend a tape measure that have both imperial and metric units - those are pretty cheap). Maybe some small shed door type hinges (bolts and nuts and washers for it , but I believe that you have those already) for making the plastic sheets to open and close. It will , probably take a day of your time , half a day to find a right stores and to collect (buy) all the necessary parts and half a day to mount and assemble them. But , it'll , probably , save you a lot of grief and time , along the way. Quality outdoorsy stuff (inflatable bed and pillow) are pretty rare , so if you really need something , ask for inflatable mattress for , like , swimming in the sea (those are made from squeaky plastic , but better than rocks). All of that should cost less than $50 (excluding mattress). Beforehand , it would be wise to design the thing you want to make and to make a list of necessary items (maybe some pictures from the internet and drawings to help you communicate , if the people in the stores aren't proficient in English). Have fun !
