Hello Kevin: I have this on going passion of restoring old tractors, the problem is after I get done i feel that I have to keep them. I am in the process of fully restoring my dad's first tractor he bought when I was 5 years old which is a 1948 8N Ford, I will be 70 in June. I feel that I know you for a long time because I been following you thru out the rebuild. So for, I rebuilt the complete front axle and spindles, steering box and the rear brakes, axle seals. Its a complete brake down so each part gets completely cleaned and detailed before the epoxy prime and paint process. You do a great job with your show and tell including with what don't work in the real world. I watched you over and over that makes all my efforts point on. This 8N makes my 9th tractor that I've restored over the years that makes a part of my Bakers dozen collection. Keep up the good work of following thru from part to part of the restore. Thx John

Hi Kevin I was just going to say that I felt your frustration with that late 8N steering system they are very hard to keep oil in and to get the play out of the teeth but I made the mistake for many years of not having the oil level up to the top bearing I thought that the plug was the proper level but now I have learned to use silicone gasket maker on all of the shims and the boss and then fill it up just passed the shims and keep that bearing I also learned that if I use #140 differential oil it stays in longer and I use some more silicone on the washer and egg corn nut on the steering wheel to keep rain water out. But I appreciate that you kept it period correct and glad you are able to use your over drive now!😀🇨🇦

There must be a machinest out there somewhere that can make parts for those old tractors.

It would likely be cost prohibitive.

If you have the money there are lots of shops that would turn out parts for you...but at what cost ?

Okay, dumb question time. Why did you only adjust the left hand tie rod and not both in small increments? TTFN/CDC

It depends where the wheels are. Once you have the box centered, you check the wheels. If one is straight ahead its good.. Then you adjust the other one to get the toe you want. Its just how this one worked out. Sometimes you have to adjust them both. But I had already been at this one before. The thing to remember is you are not just setting the toe, you are setting the toe relative to a centered steering box.

Hello, what would be your guess on the weight of the steering box. I have found one but need it shipped.

Hello Sir , i just found your channel , or more specifically this vid. & before my question just wanted to say -- Good vid, & a very nice looking tractor !!!!! Today i was looking at my first potential tractor , 8n 1949 clean looking , used only twice a year the past 10 years & before that sat for 17 years . I was ready to purchase for 1800 cdn $ until they told me of the same steering problem as yours , thus i am searching to see if its fixable . Were you able to come up with anything else to completely bring the steering to new condition , also from your vid you said there are no new parts made to solve this , this is still the case , i presume ? Thanks for your time --- Cyril

The early steering box is problematic. It is best to swap up to the 50-52 2 bolt steering box. There are usually used ones around and even new ones. There are many videos on performing the swap. I only stuck with the 4 bolt box because my tractor is a very early one and I wanted to keep as much of it right as I could(less the GM alternator anyway). Thanks for watching!

My 8N has a loader in it, my steering is tight, is there a fill hole somewhere! Not familiar with fords

theres a fill plug on the side of them or you can pop the steering wheel off and fill it from the top.
