Discover whether the Nikon Z6III lives up to the hype in my first impressions video. The Z6III is the culmination of the best features from the Nikon Z8, Z9, and ZF, bringing them all together in one powerful camera.
Images/Videos was taken using a pre-production Nikon Z6III set and was processed from the photographer's impression

As usual, incredibly detailed yet concise and to-the-point video. Thanks for this great first look video! I am really hyped about this camera. Manual lens focus features, new audio preamps, updated evf… All great additions! Direct upload to the cloud is also quite interesting. I was always on the fence for ZF due to ergonomics, Z6iii seems like a camera made for me.
Thanks!!really appreciate the kind words especially only having a few hours with the camera so tried my best to put together a decadent first look.
I think that by-and-large, this is exactly what the market needed it to be (and what Nikon needed it to be); a carefully considered body with just the right mix of features for its target audience. This makes four bodies in a row now that Nikon has hit outta the park. And I've no doubt there will be firmware updates coming for this camera as the months go on, same as the other Expeed 7 models.
Yes I agree. I think really the only fault here is still 24 megapixels. Yes it’s more than enough for most, but Nikon has stayed with 24 MP for the past 10 years and to many it feels more of the same. While the tech has improved by leaps and bounds the number still remains
@@btonelli This is core-requisite to how Nikon have often operated historically, though. They eschew the numbers to provide a holistic experience that exceeds the sum of the parts. Moving to 33MP, for example, provides only a tiny bump in linear resolution, while at the same time possibly would have comprised noise performance. Meanwhile, that tiny resolution bump can easily be made up for now in post with wonderful tools like Adobe's new AI Super Resolution feature.
I think Nikon understood all of this, and again, made very carefully balanced choices here. Remember, the EOS-R3 is only 24MP, and the forthcoming R1 will apparently remain at 24MP, too. It still remains the sweet spot for resolution, high ISO performance, data workflow management, and cost.
@@RobertFalconer1967 true and I agree with this from a technical perspective. For the average buyer who doesn’t understand this much, without the proper explanation it comes across as the same with some small upgrades.
@@btonelli My assumption-and this is only a guess, mind you-is that Nikon is targeting the slightly more informed hybrid shooter with this release, as opposed to pixel chasers. After nearly 25 years now, it wouldn't surprise me to see the entire market move away from endless megapixel increases (as they realize that they may be gradually reaching a sufficiency/usability ceiling) as the sole metric of "improvement," and instead focus more on factors such as DR, noise performance, improved operational and hybrid capabilities...and, of course, more in-camera AI features.
Again, this is just me speculating here.
Partially stacked sensor: Keep the price down and at the same time make it perform better.
Perhaps that’s the move. If it works well then no complaints
Is it just Zf/Z6iii sensor with a stacked chip hence the image quality will be the same hence if you don't need the speed, Zf or Z6iii will do?
@@NetvoTV no. It’s a different sensor than those two. All new technology
I can' wait to get my hands on that camera, that is one snazzy cage by SmallRig!
that lens it's incredible seriously!
Indeed. Love the 50 f1.2
I completely missed that you created your own channel, very glad to see after moving around between channels.
@@NVIK5 thanks. Yes been on my own since last October
Another great 👍 video enjoyed it very much. Nikon knocked it out of the park
Thanks John. Hope you are doing well!
@@btonelli yes 👍 finally sorted it out. The eye Dr implanted the wrong power lens during my cataract operation. Had to replace it . Very traumatic
@@Photojouralist123 that’s the worst. Hopefully all good from here on out
You are right about the resolution . A bit more helps either cropping
Yes agree. Besides that the camera is a powerhouse
Give me a harder-to-open card door over the non-locking ones - my only real wish list item for the Z8 (although they seemed to improve this over the Z6/7 I & II’s.
Great preview here, thanks! 👏🏻
Thanks for watching. Understand, some like that door, and yes Ive had some accidental door openings with the Z8 but I like the speed to open it if needed.
I am a simple man: I see Bobby uploads, I watch and like. Great review as always!
Thank you very much
You can have low light performance, 240 fps video and 120 fps stills, or you can have 33 MP. You can't have both. The partially stacked sensor was to keep the cost down.
Perhaps. Let’s see what comes about with the partially stacked sensor. From what I’m learning it’s more for flash than anything
I understand the criticisms regarding photo features and not enough pixels. but i am taking this as a hint that they will put the photo features on the next iteration of the z7.
Perhaps? Or is there a need for a Z7IIi now?
Nikon is so back
Indeed
Great review. I love the features. I primarily take photos only but the video specs are awesome. I agree, I wish it was 30 MP+ but for now the 24.5 MP works. Finally, Nikon should consider offering an A version and B version of the Z6 III. The A version can be what they have now with the flip out screen targeted to videographers. The B version can have the flip up or down screen found on the Z8 or Z9. To help with production the B version can have a slightly longer lead time. I’m sure we as photographers would be willing to wait a few weeks longer to get our preferred screen. OR make the screen interchangeable either by the user or authorized shop. Overall an awesome camera. I’m getting one as soon as I save up enough pennies.
Thanks for watching.
I find it funny that so many people complained about not having a flip out rotating display for years, now that they have it they want it back to the way it was.
I understand both sides to the argument, but I just find it funny.
One could argue the display makes sense for this camera as it’s designed for video more so I feel where this screen does come in handy.
Yes more Nikon users are photographers but Nikon can’t rely on that market as much so they need to expand.
Bobby does it also have Eye Focus for manual focus lenses like the Zf?
Yes exactly the same
Bob's Big Boy, Is that you? Seriously, sounds like a nice camera and great video.
lol!! Thanks 😊
@@btonelli You know what I was saying? You are American?
@@manilamartin1001 haha I do
Flexible picture controls must come to Nikon ZF or I will be very sad! 🤞
I’m sure in time it will
I recommend shooting some film alongside your Zf and making your own presets. Its fun and allows for a solution in post. Jpegs are nice but not much hassle to get raw files into your phone or tablet these days
My guess on the partially stacked sensor is that I think it’ll have better high iso dynamic range and less noise.
The Z9 and 8 have more noise at lower ISO and the dynamic range seems less than my d850
Perhaps. More testing needs to happen but you could be right
First time here. I just wanna say this man’s hair is goals
Haha thanks 🙏
It's like Superman haircut😊
I’m so glad this camera still 24mp. If anyone want more mp just buy z8.
There are many that will be happy with it at 24MP. As mentioned I think from a marketing perspective it would have been nice to have 32
There are zf, z6ii, z5... with 24mp, why another? That also in 2024, where this is not exclusively for video. Zf also having flippy screen🤔.
Yes, I fully agree with you about the megapixel 🤝 z6 line should have 30+megapixel for better cropping!! I would have bought it right away...
Yeah I’m seeing more comments on that as well
Can you make a Zf vs Z6iii in term of specs and most importantly shooting and day to day experiences?
It’s actually a video I’m considering
Id go back to Nikon, but I love the focal range of my Tamron 20-40mm on my A7R5. There is no equivalent lens on Nikon still. Plus the card things is a pain. Also I still don't understand why Nikon aren't top at stabilisation with such a big mount.
Thing I miss with my Sony is the saved settings when moving back and forth from photo and video (plus the switch).
Stabilisation has improved. Would say it’s on par with A7RV.
Yes you can test the raws, already available ...the first for a camera
Good to know. I was told cannot until it’s released
@@btonelli Please make a video with the picture control edit and upload to use in camera...I'm curious about this more than everything
Does the camera have sensor shield when changing lenses?
I really like to know a bit more about this half stack sensor. But I think when we reach end of this year the Z8 probably reach a very sweet point for its pricing. I can see it is possible to get Z8 at about 1/3 more money than Z6iii and with Nikon continues to back up its products by releasing new firmware updates on Z9 and Z8, it make it all that more difficult for buyers to make that decision. Myself I will probably go for the Z8.
Z8 has a number of promotions currently that puts it close to this camera in certain markets. It’s going to be a hard decision for some and this was a concern I had when the pricing came out.
I figured like before Nikon would come in at a better price than Sony and Canon to be extremely competitive. This time they decided to price it at a premium which I feel may not work in the long term especially with the Z8 being discounted. I could be wrong, it need to see how the market reacts. I expect if Z6III numbers aren’t as strong as they hoped, promotions will kick in very soon.
I hope there will be a Z73 with a higher resolution (>33 MP). What % stacking does the sensor have?
No word on a Z 7III.
They didn’t say what percentage
In my modest opinion, Nikon should have increased the resolution of the Z6 III to at least 37-40 MP like the D810 sensor, -magnificent camera that I still use with pleasure and confidence-, another success is the rotating screen that allows versatility fabulous framing. Thus the Z6 III would be the almost perfect camera. Thank you for such a pleasant and illustrative report.
I think 32-33MP would have been the sweet spot otherwise would compete with the Z8
@@btonelli Agree 33 MP would be great.
Question can you flip from photography to videography like you can with the Nikon z8
Yes you can
Does the Nikon Z6iii have continuous shooting at 240fps with auto focus? Currently have the Panasonic G9 mk2 where I can shoot at up to 300fps BUT with manual focus. How would you compare the two cameras for 240 fps shooting?
Not sure. Haven’t tested the camera to that level. Keep in mind full frame vs M 4/3 is going to perform different
@@btonelli Thank you for the reminder.
Thought about getting it for 2500$ however in Croatia they bumped the price to 3000€... Currently theres an S5ii for 1700€ on sale (or 2000€ for X model)... 1300€ difference is crazy.
Lumix right now is a the best bargain for full frame. Was hoping to see Nikon be a bit more competitive with the pricing but I think they are going after the A7SIII A7IV crowd
@@FMJP I have no idea, maybe higher taxes? I was looking forward to Nikon when they said 2500$ but additinonal 500$ for body alone is just absurd for me.
@@btonelli Yeah, another thing there is an A7 iii for a huge sale of just 1150€ body. Even though its an older camera at this point im thinking of getting it for weddings and general shooting. Even though Lumix is great allarounder but the only thing im concerned is the lens situation, there are hardly any on the used market so I would have to get everything brand new. Sony and Nikon lenses there are 1000s of them on used sites.
@@Omgiamsotriggered good point. Also a viable option
I hope Nikon allows Sigma and Tamron to produce Z-Mount lenses. Same with Canon.

Tamron already does and Sigma are going to be
Great 50's Haircut!
Haha thanks. Need to keep it for a tv role here
thank you for the video but I have a question what Nikon mirrorless camera will you recommend for example I don't need all these video capabilities not right now not in the future because I'm a food photographer and I don't want to pay for the functions inside of camera which I'm not going to use it so from photography perspective without any crazy video capabilities which Nikon mirrorless camera will you recommend
Thanks for watching. What megapixel number are you looking for? Is 24 enough? If so Zf is basically the Z6III minus some of the video features
@@btonelli yes 24 is enough. if Z6 II and ZF which one will you recommend? right now Z6 II on BH cost 1600 body only
@@yervandpapazyan4473 I think Zf is a better camera for AF, colors and newer processor but it depends if you like the body design.
thank you for your response and recommendation
@@yervandpapazyan4473 no prob. Hope it helps
I've been around too long to be constantly hit by G.A.S., and one thing I know from experience, for me it's best to wait a few months after a product comes out before making up my mind. In addition, it will also pay off much better for me to have ice in my stomach, and wait for between one or two years before I buy. Because then the price is usually more reasonable, and you also know a little more about the faults/cons via several others serious photographers who are not paid by Nikon or are fanboys, because then it is easier to make the right decision .....
True. I've only had two hours with the camera in the field so I need to spend some time to see the pros and cons, but the specs are impressive
Hey Nikon if you reading this, make a yellow leather Zf and I will buy one, I love yellow color, it's on Zfc now but not yet Zf, make it come quicker! 💛
Hmm yellow color I wouldn’t count on it haha. Need to get that done outside
Nice Bobby but i think coming from D800 my go to shall be ZF
Zf is still and is an awesome camera
Is the EVF blackout free like to Z8/9?
Yes
The 24 is fine , no problems with that.
The only minor disappointment I have is the AF , I was hoping Nikon would give us a bit of a leap-frog with this similar to what Sony did with the A7R V
As a Z9 owner since 2022 and recently ZF , It wouldn't have made me mad, quite the opposite .
Now It seems like we would have to wait for the Z9 II / H to get an actual improved AF (yes I know it's better than Z6II )
The AF is actually really good.
@@btonelli I am sure it is , but it's nearly as good as the Z8 / Z9 and I own a Z9 for 2+ years.
It's good at sports , not so much at portrait for example , gives you eyebrow AF not eye AF.
That's why I was hoping for a leap-frog update.. I'll wait for Z9 II I guess.
The R5 1 , R6 1 , R6 II , Almost all Sonys do it better.
To be fair most of us haven’t gotten a chance to photograph people properly due to the restrictions from Nikon for the pre-release so give reviewers more time to test.
how does it stack up again Panasonic S5IIX?
I think for video and the price point this is its biggest competition. Lumix has open gate but no CF Express so will need an external drive to maximise some of higher quality video formats.
Z6III most of the high end codecs people want but no open gate.
For photography the Z6III will win for read out speed on the sensor and more versatility.
Build quality goes to Nikon.
AF Nikon is a clear winner.
Price point is very attractive for Lumix though
Speaking for stills , let's be real here the Z6III is only marginally better in some respects than other brands in the segment and those bodies have been out for some time. The Z8 hit it out of the park but for the life of me I can't see much to get excited about here. 33mp with a fully stacked blackout free sensor would have been awesome but I am willing to bet the only reason Nikon choose to not do this is that it would eat into Z8 sales.
And then there is the flippy screen , I guess the vloggers will be happy at least. lol
The Z6III’s strengths are primarily video I feel. The Zf will give you fantastic image quality for less. Yes the Z8 is an awesome system and I feel that 32 to 33mp would have been the sweet spot for this.
Vloggers unite! Haha. Kidding aside I do use this type of screen to film myself from time to time in my studio.
Then don’t buy it.
@stephenkaras1523 Thanks for the advise, makes sense 👍
Now who will be the company to put a screen as good in sunlight as my iPhone 15 Pro on the back.......
For the birders: You only make heavy crops out of your photos if you don't have enough focal length with your lens. Otherwise the statements that 24 MP is not enough are not very substantial. And the difference between 33 MP and 24 MP is only 9 MP. That's not enough to get any noticeable improvement.
Actually there is a difference. When you total the vertical resolution and horizontal resolution difference which is about 1.23 times in both measurements it’s about 1.51 times which gives you an about 51% more pixels to work with.
While you aren’t getting double the resolution you are getting more cropping power and still maintaining resolution.
2500 in Australia hmm almost 5k ...I can get a second hand Z8 or GFX 100s for that ..
That's the problem with new cameras is that last years model is a better deal 🤔
Yes I think the Australian price is a bit too high. Hopefully they change it.
@@btonelli Yeah it is absolutely insane here ... I did complain to Nikon Australia...deaf ears. Thanks for the review
The second had z8 is the win right now.
@jamesjackson4264 absolutely it is
@@btonelli Aussie prices on new cameras typically drop quite drastically >6 months after release. Was the same for the Z8, as well as the A9. Although the Z9 stayed high for much longer, it is now in the low 7k AUD, and the Z8 can be had for high 5k AUD.
Zf wasn’t as drastic a drop, but still about 500AUD these last few months, to the point a Zf/40mm F2 kit is now 200 cheaper than just the Zf body upon release. So, just a bit of patience, it will see sub 3,800AUD by the end of the year.
Is the IQ better than on the Zf?
Hard to say. Haven’t tested it next to a Zf
Honestly UHS-II V90 cards are way more expensive than good CF Express Type B cards now a days.
I have a Z8 and would have preferred they kept the dual CFB card slots of the Z9.
Angelbird and many other reliable brands offer quality and speedy CFB cards that are way cheaper and have higher capacity storage compared to V90 SD cards from the same brands.
There are a lot of cheap CF Express type B cards that are slow and unreliable. Those that perform well are more expensive than the UHS II versions.
I also wish the Z8 was dual CF but I guess they are trying to appease different users
@@btonelli Not necessarily, take ProGrade, they offer a 256gb UHS-II V90 SD card for retail $229.99 USD. That offers an advertised read of 300 MB/s and a write of 250 MB/s.
While the same brand offers a 256gb CFB 2.0 card (Gold label, they offer different tiers of cards, Gold being a more affordable grade of card compared to their higher end "Cobalt" or "Iridium" cards.) for $169.99. Which offer an advertised read of up to 1700 MB/s and writes up to 1300 MB/s.
Within the same brand, you have such a high price disparity of CFB 2.0 cards and V90 SD cards.
Good CFB 2.0 cards have gotten way cheaper in these last few years and are taking over, while V90 cards have stayed expensive.
And ProGrade is as reliable as you get with card brands.
The 2nd hand z8 is still the win. I
its a fantastic value for sure, but also a larger camera
They should make a hairpiece like that so that that I can look cool too.
I agree. Why settle for a less capable camera when you can get a near mint Z8 for $500 more! $2500 is a lot of $$$ for the z6iii.
😂 have to keep the Hairstyle for an acting role I’m doing for the next few weeks haha
@@dennismurphy1937 very much. People need new tho. Long live the spender.
It is not a culmination of z9,z8,zf. What Nikon did is; hierarchy was so defined in old series. What you paid was what you had got. They now switched old system, now you can get good item for what you have paid. The only camera that has the correct color (nikon color) was Zf. All the Z cameras are false in color. Now Z6 3 also gives Zf like correct color. I assume they finally fixed it. Now i can wait to change new Z9 when it is arrives.
Let’s see how the colors change if they do
So why is it 3600 dollars in Sweden!?
Prob VAT included. US no tax included
D600 , D610, D750, D780, Z6, Z6 II, Zf and now z6 III have same old sensor. It should already be bumped up to 33 or 36 mp.
Only the same size but not the same sensor. Its partially stacked sensor.
The sensor isn’t the same but yes still 24MP
It's not the same sensor : Z6 I and II sensor is BSI and 24.5 MP, not 24MP. But yeah they could bump it to 33MP
The camera records only one slot. What kind of video can we talk about?
Can record in two slots but I do t know about redundancy
Well 3000 Euro in Europe so 3200 USD. And for that still a 24.5 MP sensor. No thanks.
It’s priced similarly to the Sony A7IV and Canon R6 II.
A7IV is round 2200-2300 USD currently so its close with more features
In the UK the canon r6ii is currently £1999, Sony a7iv is £1779 after £300 Sony cashback. This z6iii looks really interesting but it's £2699 which is $3427 US at current exchange rate..
Is it really £700 better than the r6ii?
@@craiginthemud7086 ouch. I guess that depends on your needs. The Z6III has arguably the best video specs for the price in the market currently. I don’t think though these prices will hold that high for long though. I foresee promotions and incentives to make them more competitive
I enjoy your videos, but aren't we a little tired of Nikon not giving you full access and overlooking you so you can't give a balanced review. You hinted at the issues it has like the flip screen which other brands have made tilt and fully articulating. Also it should have been a fully stacked sensor like you waned to say... These videos seem like free adverts for Nikon 😕
The rules are the rules and while myself and even the Reps here don’t necessarily agree to the limitations given it comes from HQ. However North America and other countries had more access.
My take is, wait to really get a proper hands on before making any final decisions
@@btonelli Fair enough. I wouldn’t want to make a video under those conditions but guess tis good to have a hands on 😊
Partially stacked benefit....yeah on our wallets 😵
Let’s see how the tech is. Price is definitely up there
You are right-handed, you hold your lens with your left hand, you focus and you trigger with your right hand: what do you do if on the fly you have to modify your settings or call up a pre-recorded configuration (I often do this by video and sports and animal photography) if your dial is on the left?
Will we be able to assign to certain buttons the possibility of switching configurations with the right hand with the Nikon Z6III?
Only 24 MPX, this remains a big disappointment overall.
Not sure on the configuration. Yes I wish it was 32MP as well
The AF is better vs the Z6ii and Z6, BUT against its two main rivals a resounding.….NO.
How so?

For some markets yes
Z8 is looking old now. With 33 MP and the flip down screen on the Z6 nobody would buy a Z8.

lol!!! 😂
Well Nikon just shot all of us photographers (not videographers), in the foot. I shoot all my paid gigs and events with two Z6ii's. For me they are over 90% fantastic - only lacking a bit in the AFC department. I barely miss any focus, even with faster moving subjects. However, I was interested in looking seriously at replacing them with the new Z6iii. However, I now know it has that stinking flip around screen for videographers. I shoot over 70% of all my gigs with the flip down screen. If I do this with the Z6iii, I'll have the stupid screen flipped off centre and hanging out the side of the camera. This is a deal breaker, so looks like my Z6ii's, will be lasting a very long time. Thanks Nikon for throwing all us photographers under the bus!!
I also liked this comment in the Matt Irwin video. The price in Australia is exorbitant as the USA price is $3800aud equivalent but we are being charged $4500aud so like you I am not going with this yet.
I felt the same about Fujis XH2S that I got - As a photographer I cannot get used to the flip out screen 😅
i mean, as a still photog with reading glasses i cant see the screen anyway and like cameras where i can turn it around and away. horses, courses etc.
You can always just get one Z6iii and keep one Z6ii. Offer your customers some amazing video clips they can post vertically on social media. The stability in this camera can do it without a gimbal decently. Use the Z6ii for your traditional non flippy screen shooting. Just a thought. No need to replace 2 cameras. The video on this new one is lightyears better than the Z6ii in every way possible.
I feel the same way. I have Z6ii, and it looks like I am not upgrading.
It kills me when they review a product but can’t pronounce the name of the company correctly

Since the launch I have had two Z 9s and a Z 7II with MB-N11, all of which I use daily. I don't need a Z 6III. I may buy a third Z 9 as it is best suited for me. It would be much more important for me if Nikon finally brought the Z 35mm f/1.2 onto the market, which many Nikon professionals have been waiting for for so long 😞
Yes waiting for a good 35mm
