Hello! I want to thank you for this video and your reply in comments supporting us as a country. It means a lot!
I don’t want to burden you with too much information, so let me just say that, today I read a Chinese American author’s awarded work. I’d enjoyed it (and glad that there are more and more Asian voice in the English publishing world) until to a point, unexpectedly, the author decided to include Taiwan as part of their narrative and used a political/historical tragedy happened in Taiwan (which we are still trying to recover from as a country to this day) to fit the narrative.
I was so triggered and it caused a mental spiral in me like, what if this is the international leading narrative and we are just “be represented” by it?
Anyway, then I just mindlessly clicked and watched YT videos, trying to forget the whole experience. And then, I watched this one and Oh, you have no idea how much this one helped me. It’s so healing to find some people to view your identity as valid and treat it as such.
I’m afraid I might still talk too much. I’ll stop myself before it getting worse 😅
Also I’ve been enjoying your book reviews and recommendations (found this channel recently.) Thank you for sharing your creativity and thoughts with us 😄
Listening to you gushing about Taiwan made me want to travel there asap. And then you mentioned the spiders. Spiders and I can be friends, but they have to be kindly enough to keep a bearable size. Otherwise our friendship is confronted with a serious crisis.

I couldn't agree more. I can be friends with a spider but there are limits. The spider I mentioned was toying with me. It was at least the size of my hand and was suspended in a web above my head. The web was attached to two trees on either side of the road and it was just hanging there in the air like something out of a horror movie.

I've heard others talk about Bestiary and not been engaged by it. You have a way of talking about books that leaves me feeling much more interested. I am trying to challenge myself to read at least 1 book for every country in the world. Mainly that the author is from that country or has a heritage of that country. I had The Stolen Bicycle on my list but I think I'm going to prioritise Bestiary first.

Thank you for the recommendations. It's wonderful to hear from someone who shares a love of Taiwan. Just a small correction I'd like to offer: Paiwanese is the name of one specific aboriginal group, and there are over a dozen distinct groups that make up the aboriginal people of Taiwan. So not all aboriginal Taiwanese people are Paiwanese. Anyone interested can check out the wikipedia entry for Taiwanese Indigenous Peoples for more information.

I wouldn't dedicate a video to it because I'm not an authority on the events or the issues it represents, but I'm certainly sickened and angry. I post a lot on Twitter about racism, sexism, homophobia etc. There's nothing I think about more than human rights and discrimination.
